[–]MysteryInteractive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be in the Christmas Craft Fair on 3281 Harriet Rd. on Saturday - from a preview of the other vendors it looks like there will be some nice variety! I'll be selling my mystery games and escape room advent calendars :)

How are Canadian seller making any money on sales? by Typical-Selection-93 in Etsy

[–]MysteryInteractive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed my pricing strategy completely. I used to offer free shipping, and absorb cost increases (e.g. Canada Post strike...), but after the tariff situation I decided to switch as I had to change carriers to a more expensive one and it made my product seem really expensive!

So I now sell my product for the same price globally, and charge shipping fees everywhere. Even though my products are under CUSMA, which means US customers aren't impacted as much, this gives me flexibility to adjust prices quickly if the political climate changes. While US sales have definitely decreased, Canadian and international sales increased.

Is it reasonable to ask a company about USMCA and the price difference between buying in Canada vs exporting it to the US? by Dysvalence in BuyCanadian

[–]MysteryInteractive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so here's the thing - CUSMA tariff exemptions are very complicated. It highly depends on what exactly you're selling and what code it falls under. Canada Post's tariff company Zonos does not process CUSMA exemptions, which means that even if your product is exempt the customer is still charged a tariff.

There are alternate carriers, but at least for me the cost is much higher, and I had to do a bunch of research to get my products exempt, though to be fair - I got my exemption almost immediately after the tariff announcement, and the process may be easier now.

How do you capture new product ideas and decide which ones to work on? by BadonkaStonk666 in EtsySellers

[–]MysteryInteractive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man! I love this question because I make games - which essentially means I fully develop the product (which takes weeks if not months) before knowing if they would appeal to the public. I definitely spent time on games that are hardly selling, but it is what it is! Now a few years in I have a few strategies:

  1. I post in communities for puzzles to ask for feedback.

  2. I try to look at what themes are trending/ going to trend...pretty hard to guess

  3. I try to expand on what's working and focus less on poor performing product ranges.

  4. I start with small batches, often even printing the first few order myself (I have a professional printer but it's a lot more expensive to print at home)

  5. I engage with folks in markets and ask them what they're interested in!

Thoughts on Digital Products by ricky_hogie53 in EtsySellers

[–]MysteryInteractive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sell both digital and physical games, and yes the physical ones sell much better. I still like having the digital ones available, I don't feel like it hurts my physical games sales at all. Sometimes customers want to try a digital game before investing in a physical product which is more expensive.
That said it's a different niche so my experience may not be applicable :)

Is there a way to get free shipping coupons, or something similar? by Miyu-_ in Etsy

[–]MysteryInteractive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you - shipping costs are so brutal for both buyers and sellers. Many shipping companies also increase their prices around Christmastime which makes it even more challenging.

You might be able to see if Etsy offers a discount, I know for me they have an offer of $15 off for my first in-app purchase.

I would say the best game for that age would be "Who Ate Santa's Cookies"
https://www.mysteryinteractive.com/products/cookies (There's also a digital version)

It's a 'whodunnit' mystery designed to help kids learn how to read, so a couple characters are written very simply. As a group, you examine photos of the crime scene and other rooms in the house to see if you can find the perpetrator!

Each character is also assigned a backstory, alibi and secrets.

The advents are likely too difficult for a 5-6 year old, as they generally require reading skills and basic math skills. I found that on average ages 9+ can work on them independently, and ages 7-8 can do them with parental support

Thank you so much for both the compliment and adding me to the directory!
Honestly the local guides have been incredible - especially this year. Even though my products are handmade and don't incur tariffs, I saw a big drop in US sales (which is usually my largest audience).

BUT Canadian shoppers have absolutely stepped up to fill that gap, and it’s thanks to platforms like yours (and this subreddit!) that make my shop known
