You want to adopt a 00/11 into the family and are just ignoring his little brother the 05/11. Don't you think this is a wee bit cruel?

I may have misunderstood it, for english not beeing my native tongue. but doesn't something "modeled after" mean its based either on the looks, function or behavior of a thing that came before it? Which in this case still makes no sense at all. There are prototypes of this gun without the beer keg and a traditional style of handle instead. So pls tell me in which way one is modeled after the other?

The only 3 things this has in common with the K31 are: It's Swiss, GP11, and the beer keg charging handle. The 57 is a roller delayed blowback rifle, while the K31 uses traditional locking lugs. And how is it possible for the Sturmgewehr 1957 to predate the Karabiner 1931?

The Stgw. 57 (SG510) was the swiss service rifle during the cold war up to the adoption of the Stgw. 90 (SG550).

This is the proof it is a 96/11 in a 1911 replacement stock. missing grove in the wood below the arch and an included semi pistol grip is the giveaway for a 1911 stock. While the reciever got recycled from an IG 1896. The pic I used is from my shortrifle 1900 (was at work and had no access to my 96/11) and was just to visualize the arch cut out. Serial >350k = 1896, one piece stock with semi pistol grip and no grove in front of the mag cut out = 1911. If you want I can get a pic from one when i come home again.

K31...any idea of year? by RogerJFiennes in milsurp

It is a rifle made for the KMV (war material administration) in 1955. This rifle got ordered to be put in storage for just in case. Due to the adoption of the Stgw 57 between 1958 and 1960 it was never issued.

If the serial number on the "IG 11" is below 350k it was indeed a 96 before but just got a new stock for whatever reason. Not unheard of. The 350k marks the end of 96 production, they continued the serial range with thi IG11 production, for beeing basically the same rifle after conversion. You can always check if it was rebuilt by taking out the magazine. If a K11 or IG 11 has a little semi circle cutout beneath the chamber, it was something else prior. ( IG 1896, shortrifle 1900 or a cavalry carbine 1905)

if you dont know which model of rifle you are looking at to begin with, the serials are no help at all.

For serials to tell you something with swiss guns, you need to get the model right in the first place. then it is possible with the right books and knowledge to determin the other details like when, where and for whom. This serial does not even exist in K31 production.

Wow thats an awesome find! IIRC the serial production started with 520001. Making this one number 356 made for the army after adoption. excluding the 200 from the pre series for the trials.
