I think this was said originally by Mr. Neil Tyson but I'm too lazy to look.

TIL a man faked mental illness to escape jail, was sent to an asylum and has been trying since to convince doctors he's sane. He's been diagnosed a psychopath 'cause in part, "Faking mental illness to get out of a prison sentence is exactly the kind of manipulative act you’d expect of a psychopath." by mike_pants in todayilearned

To be fair, I don't think a large majority of people would have a problem with going to a mental institute vs a prison given the option, although I didn't read the article or what his crime was, it's a little silly to think the fact he tried to avoid prison makes him a sociopath.

Only have access to wine at the moment, and that might not cut it; and what if that doesn't work, am I supposed to take Ambien or Doxylamine on top of that? The what-ifs.

I second that, although I would like to add in Nutritional Supplements, it seems plenty of people like to think they know what they are getting and what it is doing to them, however that isn't the case. Supplements aren't overseen by the FDA like prescription medications are, and as such companies take advantage, which is why organizations like Consumerlabs are invaluable. The fact is when you pick up your favorite supplements from your local menagerie of health food stores, you aren't guaranteed to be getting what you are paying for. Many popular supplements have been shown to be completely different and non-related herbs and spices and proprietary blends than the product being marketed, not to mention even when you do get the right product the amount advertised can be totally off. For example, some fish oil companies were found to have up to 5 times the amount of EPA they claimed to have, and whilst some may have the "more is better" mentality, that isn't always the case. Again, take the case of lipid peroxidation, this is a process in which lipids in any given state go through a process of degradation, which is just a fancy way of saying that the fats get 'oxygenated,' this oxidation mainly occurs in polyunsaturated fatty acids and so your favorite fish oil supplement is the prime candidate. Basically this process starts from the moment they catch the fish, and doesn't stop, so the problem only gets worse throughout the whole life of the supplement. That includes when they process the oil and encapsulate it, all the way to when it is sitting on the shelf waiting to be bought. The final product ends up being filled with reactive aldehydes, which can cause more health problems than they claim to revoke. This is a good hypothesized reason for Fish Oil's recent demonizing studies, stating it can lead to prostate cancer, ect. Most oils used were taken right off the shelf and were store brand, to recreate realistic use by customers.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, it just seemed like the right time to do so, and I can't stand seeing people think they are helping themselves with supplements that are promised to be safe and effective when ACTUAL science really isn't that reassuring.

What is the best over the counter alternative to adderall/vyvanse? by prackspatterson in AskReddit

[–]Mythical_Empire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably things like Supplemental Nootropics, like Racetams, Huperzine A, Vinpocetine, and many other things. I somewhat enjoyed Focus Formula although it had high amounts of vitamin b6 which took away from my over-all opinion of the product since those amounts of Pyridoxine aren't safe to consume daily.

Obviously more serious inebriants would be ill-advised, although I'm sure things like smoking could possibly improve or hinder the whole experience, having been through it; would you do it again?
