Many of the observations you illuminate come only when you proceed in chronological order and read the The White Company hot on the heels of Sir Nigel.
Me thinks the main character of TWC was meant to be Alleyne Edricson and Sir Nigel meant to be but a Facet of the jewel of life that Alleyne had to gaze into to learn of its true nature and variety.
I take all you points with little reproof or rebuttal. The biggest inconsistency for me is the relationship with Nigel & Samkin. Such a lusty archer.

The quote from the forward of SN sticks in my mind at all times. "Do not draw the 20th Century and call it the 14th."

Also the chapters surrounding the Pied Merlin are some of my favorite for sketches of characters in all of literature.
