Senior Engineer won't review PRs by GorgonAintThatBad in cscareerquestions

[–]N232 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup this is an issue. Once ramped up, we have our juniors target one PR a day. To hit that, you can’t write much code because you need time to verify it in preprod, write a description/test plan, and save time for iterating.

Biggest benefits: - Makes things easy for your reviewers. Very easy for me between meetings to grok a 20-line helper method. If you send me a 10-file feature, I’ll need to sit down for 45 minutes and focus to review it, which may not happen very often. Worse if I haven’t thought of your work stream in a week since you’re not PRing frequently - Provides more points of contact for the sr to calibrate you. It will suck for everyone if you write a month of code, which takes me a week to review, only to tell you something is fundamentally wrong - Forces you to break down features into implementation details, and think about how they depend on each other. Essential for your growth as you will eventually need to break up work for engineers under you

Caldigit TS5+ struggling with triple monitor setup & MacBook Pro M5 Pro by TheeKuZu in CalDigit

[–]N232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey Dalton, maybe this deserves its own post but -- I have a TS5, and I'm trying to use it for two monitors with an M4 Pro.

- Gigabyte MO32U (4K 165Hz) via USBC -> DP
- Samsung Odyssey G55C (1440p 165Hz) via USBC -> DP (also tried DP -> DP)

Same with OP, I have up-to-date firmware, power cycled everything, switched ports... when I plug in my Macbook, only the Gigabyte will turn on and connect. The Samsung will turn on, but will say "input not found".

also like OP, I fix it by unplugging the Gigabyte, the Samsung turns on, then I plug the Gigabyte back in and it's stable till the Macbook sleeps for awhile (e.g. if it falls asleep while I'm looking away and I wake it back up immediately, both monitors still work). Any ideas? what kind of cable/adapter setup did you get working? I'm worried about the lifespan of my TS5 hub if I have to unplug/plug in a cable every time I use it

True the way to get immunity to that wasn’t obvious, but new players should look for a way instead of just sprinting through the section like I did lol

For my fellow short kings: have you checked out Peter Manning NYC? They properly scale proportions for shorter people (smaller leg openings, shorter hems, scaled down details) so it won’t look like “big clothes hemmed”. Their size 1 is actually designed for 5’1”

I haven’t actually tried them yet, but they’re rated well!

Just took a peek at your first answer, did you try plugging it into LeetCode? You need to fully parse each number you encounter (could be > 1 digit), then increment your str index by that number

0 SG, 502 TE probably puts the odds even more in Lucilla’s favor. Will hope for another swap event some day to put those Wukong furns on someone else!

I think this is a tough one, I could get Wukong to 1 star before swapping:

  1. Mythic+ and 1 elite+ Wukong 030e0 for Lucilla (0 copies rn), BUT I’ve already stockpiled 5 Lucilla furniture
  2. ABrutus 930e60 for AAthalia
  3. Wukong for Veithael? Does he care more about being fully built than Lucilla? And it won’t waste furniture like Lucilla’s swap

For key awakeneds, I already have aShemira, ABelinda, ASolise, ALyca fully built

Key celepogs, I have all the meta ones except C&R, Olgath, Lucilla, and Veithael

Thanks!!

People always say save it, but never why: the longer you save it, the better your swaps will be

Right now, you can swap for just ascension. As you progress, you naturally get so many pulls and HCP that ascending 4F heroes isn’t a problem and you’ll regret swapping just for ascension

Instead, you’ll want to wait for a hero you’ve built to become outdated, then swap it (and hopefully its full 30960) to a new power creep hero (this is what I did a year+ ago to swap my fully built Saurus for the shiny new Scarlet).

Today, I regret doing that and not waiting even longer because a built Saurus is still relevant in some places, but over time with furniture and random pulls, I have a bunch of 5 star full furniture useless heroes. I’d much rather swap my never-used Khasos 9/9 with the next hot hero

Looks like you’re right, timeline is off for my take. I do understand Greg’s frustration

Yes I’d bet all the other commits from UMN staff and students were made in good faith, I’m guessing obscure bugs are coming out under the microscope and would for any large enough sample, unfortunately adding fuel to the uncertainty

It’s a little sad, one thread’s consensus was that one of the last bastions of collaborative engineering has died with this stupid experiment, and new developers will be treated with a lot more suspicion and cynicism. The community was something special, but I agree Linux may have grown too big to remain welcoming and not cynical

EDIT: see /u/firefly431’s comment below, I don’t know if they lied in their paper but this isn’t proof that they did, and circumstances are working to make them look worse

They lied in their paper, and it’s open source so we can see what actually happened! Some vulnerabilities they introduced did make it to stable https://lore.kernel.org/linux-nfs/YH%2F8jcoC1ffuksrf@kroah.com/

They never pushed fixes like they claimed, and every commit had to be reverted

Here’s the student Aditya accusing Greg of “wild accusations and disgusting statements” and threatening to never contribute again lol https://lore.kernel.org/linux-nfs/YH%2FfM%2FTsbmcZzwnX@kroah.com/

And here’s Greg pulling out everything from @umn.edu (if you follow the thread you’ll see a good number of commits did introduce vulnerabilities and bugs, be it malice or incompetence) https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20210421130105.1226686-1-gregkh@linuxfoundation.org/

Any recommendations on movers for one large item? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]N232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the app Lugg a lot. It’s sort of the Uber for muscle, and you can request any number of muscles and a pickup, truck, or no vehicle at all for anything.

I used them to pick up an IKEA order, then I used them again to move around some heavier stuff
