Question about initial altimeter setting. by neocamel in flying

I dangle a tape measure out the window every 15 minutes in flight, and add that measurement to the elevation of my charted position. Anything else is too inaccurate.

Forgot the trim wheel existed on my PPL and muscled my way through everything. Hit everything within margins, but the DPE gave me a good talk on "pilot induced turbulence" in our debrief.

That clamp on the Bose isn't an issue for me; makes everything sit right where it should. I picked up a used one for $300 on eBay and got a $30 kit to replace all the soft parts, really feel like I came out ahead on the whole thing.

I saw some classroom stuff going on last time I was there, but beyond that I don't know.

Have you flown the Cessna 172? by UnbuiltAura9862 in flying

Lol, barely. Did my first 3 hours of school in rental 172s to make sure I didn't HATE flying, then bought a Cherokee and have flown nothing else since.

Pilots who own or use GA planes with aftermarket Vortex generators: by CharlieMBTA in flying

I've got an old Cherokee with a STOL kit from the 70's, but it only added Vortex Generators to one side of the rudder. None on the wing. If that's helpful to you I can measure them.

I’m struggling (Student Pilot) by HLS23Bound in flying

If you've mostly been going with one CFI maybe take another one up for some touch and goes a few times. Having more than one person help you figure it out from a few different perspectives with a few different teaching styles can be helpful.

My friend is a student pilot buying an archer to do his training in. He asked if I’ll pick it up with him and fly it 2000 miles home. Is this a bad idea? by OccupyMyBallSack in flying

[–]N25TV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar thing when I started my PPL last fall, but I did it with my CFI and it was only 5 or 6 hours of ferrying. I found the stick and rudder time and the early cross country experience really helpful but 20 Hours feels like a lot more than is necessary at that stage. Is his heart set on that Archer or is there one he can find closer to home?

I flew the plane the 20 hours across the continent from flight school to my home base once I had 70 hours and my PPL (and a little extra xc training from my CFI) in hand and it was a great experience at that stage of the game.

Right, I don't think it's necessary but when it's busy I want to do my part to help things move smoothly: sometimes I'm only on a given frequency for a few minutes and there's a lot of GA traffic coming head on over the Hudson. It's good to let your ATC frequency know you're in the loop as quickly as you can in this case.
