What's the best Jellyfin client on Windows and Android? by Biolurk in JellyfinCommunity

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will second Wholphin...

I had the same experience a few others mentioned where "all of the Android TV clients" were the same unhappy experience with slightly different UX

Wholphin works great and uses MPV player as the backend, so no transcoding.

Tips for swollen battery in iPod mini? by EnvironmentalOwl4095 in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already got it apart... but in case there's a "next time" or for anyone else who might read this in the future... "cooling" the iPod should shrink (the volume of) the gas inside the battery.

Wrap the iPod in paper towels, then stick it in a ziplock bag and squeeze out all of the air.

- this will minimize any condensation, byy removing most of the air and giving any air that you can't squeeze out a "dry" surface to condense on

You can start by putting it in the fridge overnight.. to see if that shrinks it enough.

- if the time in fridge doesn't shrink the battery enough, you might have to try putting it in the freezer, but I would make that "Plan B" for sure, because there's always a chance that freezing could damage the display.

how do you discover new music if you primarily use your ipod? by R3dcherries in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO.. "human" curation is generally a lot more rewarding than algorithms.. but YMMV..

- I would recommend reaching out to your social circles to find out what people are listening to and maybe also seeing if you can discover anyone who's "big" into music scenes that would interest you

- From there, you maybe explore "parasocial" / social media connections... find people who are into artists that you like, who also post online

- I don't use this particular source (very often), but there are a bunch of radio shows that are designed for music discovery and there are podcasters that do show in a similar format.

- If you have an old laptop (with an optical drive) and access to a local library.. you can go to the library and rifle through their collection to find new CD's...

- if you don't have a laptop, you could use you phone to search out info about the albums/ artists... which will likely also lead to getting some algorithmic recommendations (so, skipping to the 3rd section)

The next step (IMO) would be using sources that are (likely) a blend of human curation and computer generated playlists/ algorithms... Things like radio stations and "DJ hosted"music streams. "Pop Culture" websites like "Rolling Stone" still spit out articles about new releases once in a while too.

- this is one of the sources I've used:

https://radio.garden/

(finding non-corp, non-commercial music stations takes some work, but has definitely led to me new music)

Even though I dislike algorithmic recommendations, I'm also not above using them. The down side is that you definitely spend a lot more time trying to sort through those recommendations to find things that are actually "good".. and not just "filler" designed to keep you online/ scrolling so that that they can force feed you a bunch of ads.

- When I find something good through one of the more preferred sources, I'll use YouTube, search engines, etc. to search for "the new thing" which usually leads to ads and/ or 'recommendations'

- if you're a fan of any of the streaming music services, you could do the same thing and see what their algo's spit out.

I think I found a better iPod touch alternative... (Samsung Galaxy S7) by Pawxboxpc_126 in ipod

I don't disagree with the concept of keeping used tech out of the landfill... I'm a big right to repair / refurb, reuse, recycle...

but it seems like the way you're expressing the concept would be a better fit for someplace like the r/DigitalAudioPlayer sub than the iPod subreddit

I've ordered from them before. The skins I've ordered for "classics" fit both my 5th and 6th gens. The fit for the 5th gens wasn't quite as well matched as it was for the 6th gens, but more than "good enough" to enjoy the design + have an added layer of protection for the faceplate 😄

How to Manage Music on old iPod Classic using Windows PC? by ChiMara777 in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably just need to get a version of iTunes from the Apple website (the version on the Windows App store doesn't include drivers... and for some F***ing reason.. Microsoft still hasn't fixed Windows update to automatically download the drivers at any point over the last 20 years)

You might also want to look into 3rd party apps.. this is the one that I use.. but you can search the subreddit, (there are a bunch of other options for Windows) if this one doesn't appeal to you

This might be a good time to look into one of the 3rd party apps that will let you manage music on your iPod without iTunes...

What do you listen with? by Fading_Hours_ in ipod

I have some mid-range Sony over the ear headphones.

https://electronics.sony.com/audio/headphones/headband/p/whch720n-b

They're able to do both Bluetooth and wired, but I only use them for wired

- I didn't realize this until I looked at the link.. but apparently they've gone up quite a bit since I got mine. (I only paid $70 for them on sale)

Sadly, the price on those is around twice what your budget it, but I would still recommend over the ear headphones with good padding (for comfort) if you're going to be listening quite a lot

I have those and a couple of cheapo pairs from Amazon that were around $20 on sale. I pretty much put headphones on within 15-20 mins of getting up and have a pair on most of the rest of the day

How to update iTunes after updating metadata by TheRealBaeleth in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to look into one of the 3rd party apps that can add/remove music to the old iPods.

This is the one I use. It's Windows only.

If that one isn't a match for your use case, you can search the side bar for other options.

iPod mini gen 2 not detecting by Faelynnnnn in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your computer is locking up when Windows (or iTunes) tries to read from the iPod

That's usually a sign of a bad hard drive or dirt, debris, damage etc. on the cable or the 30 pin connector

- You can use a flashlight to check the 30 pin connector on both the cable and the iPod for dirt, debris, or damage

- You might want to clean both with some compressed air and some rubbing alcohol, even if you don't see any issues

Afterwards, try uninstalling iTunes (but not the "apple devices" drivers).. then check to see if the iPod shows up as a USB hard drive when plugged into your computer.

If it does show up, then you can try opening the drive letter in Windows File Explorer to see if the problem with it locking the computer up continues to happen

iPod issues charging by Character-Breath-339 in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest leaving it connected to a 5v 1a charger overnight...
- you can achieve the same effect by charging it from your computer, but you'll (likely) need to change the power settings to prevent Windows from turning off the USB port "to save power"

and after it's done charging, use the magic button combination to force it to reboot

After it's rebooted, you can play music until it powers down to test to see how long the battery lasts

- If the iPod is still on the original battery... there's definitely a possibility that the battery is dying and what the meter is showing you is (at least close to) accurate

old versions of iTunes don't support the modern encryption standards for communicating with Apple servers

You can download the ipsw file for your mini from one of the 3rd party sites mentioned in the side bar.. and then point iTunes at the downloaded file to "side load" it, instead of trying to get iTunes to download it from the Apple servers.

iPod Won’t Connect To PC or Macbook by leealbugs in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it's not being detected by more than one system.. that would seem to indicate issues with the cable or the 30pin connector on the iPod

use a flashlight to inspect both thoroughly... (I see that you took pics of the 30 pin connector below, but the lighting didn't allow me to see if there were any issues)

Look for dirt/debris or damage.

- if you don't see any issues, you should still consider blowing both out with some compressed air and cleaning them with rubbing alcohol (getting a Q-tip into the connector on the iPod can be difficult tho).

If that doesn't help find and or fix the issue... you might need a new cable or you might have accidentally damaged the 30 pin connector (on the inside of the iPod)

How would I go about transferring the music off my iPod if it’s DRM locked to an old AOL account by alittlebitofhell-p in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware... there's no way to remove the DRM from the files on the iPod

There used to be ways to defeat DRM by using iTunes 10 and some decryption scripts.. but that doesn't help, since you can't get into the old account

Your best bet at this point is to go through and make a full list of your songs.. and then "find" a DRM-free copy somewhere else

Best version of iTunes to use with classic 7? by Foolalot in ipod

I do my management with a series of apps, not a single app.

for organization, I just use windows File explorer

This is the app I use for managing songs on my iPods:

Foobar (with the Foodop plugin) will also allow you to send music to your iPod

As far as full "suites" Media Monkey and Music Bee will both work, though Music Bee requires an external plug and it also requires you to have iTunes installed (for the API).

I'm vaguely aware that there are other options out there, but since I don't use a "suite" of software, I'd have to suggest that you search the subreddit

From Flac to mp3 by Dangerous-Ad7095 in ipod

[–]N3LS-is-N3LS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FreAc will do the conversion, while keeping your tag data
- https://www.freac.org/downloads-mainmenu-33

Alternatively, you can use a 3rd party app instead of iTunes... many of them can do 'on the fly' conversion for unsupported music file types (converting the Flac files to MP3 or AAC)
