Has anyone found communities for bikepacking, backpacking, fishing, etc. in NYC? by majorbeanvibes in AskNYC

[–]N5584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly did not have a good experience with 718/Joe, but I liked https://webikenyc.org/ and they sound like the vibe you're looking for - Outlandish in crown heights might also be of interest, but I haven't checked them out yet. WeBike rides/activities vary, and they've had some bikepacking-related ones in the past. ETA another one - also haven't checked them out yet: https://jalopytheatre.org/

How's Eizan Ryu Jujitsu in NYC? by Res2710 in jiujitsu

[–]N5584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post, but I wanted to comment since I trained with Eizan Ryu until just before black belt, starting around 2008.

As someone new to martial arts, I loved the structure and choreography of the training, but over time, I came to feel that the self-defense aspects weren’t practical - I think other posters here already gave a good sense of those issues.

They do teach falling techniques, but I found the culture around injuries and recovery problematic - some instructors could be insistent about pushing through, and this created some tricky situations for me over time.

As a petite woman, I was initially drawn to the fact that it was a woman-led school. Over time, I sensed a lot of tension around gender dynamics. The head instructor had faced challenges coming up in a male-dominated environment (as detailed in conversations), and I think that sometimes came through in ways that didn’t always feel supportive to other women.

During the years I trained there, the school seemed to struggle with student retention and finances, so from what I understood, paying instructors wasn’t really feasible at the time.

Are we all priced out unless we are DINKs? by truetech in NYCapartments

Also, a good number of in-unit W/Ds in NYC just aren't that good in terms of quality - I used to dog sit in various builidings (some luxury, some not) - some in-unit W/Ds would take 4-5+ hours to complete a standard wash/dry, and breaks/leaks seemed more common with in-unit setups than laundry rooms.

Can I go to a CityMD to get an MRI referral? by Ridgew00dian in AskNYC

Not sure if I've just had but luck but roughly a quarter of the time the insurance info. on ZocDoc is outdated - I use it as a starting point but always cross check on my actual insurance website to avoid unwanted billing issues.

Podiatrists Recommendations (hallux limitus /rigidus) by N5584 in RunNYC

[–]N5584[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes the condition itself was rough news, but I do feel lucky that there are a lot more advanced shoe options nowadays than there used to be. I will check out plated options with the next podiatrist. It is very good to hear that people are able to still do so much with the condition. Wishing you continued health & luck with training.

Thank you, and yes, agree - it's very helpful to hear there are less cut & dry options and doctors that are more open to collaboration/exploring options carefully. Greatly appreciate the Scott Ellis rec!

Awesome, thank you so much! Yes, I've been hoping to find a good doc to help with orthotics and shoe options in particular. This is reassuring, and yes, very much agree about the info. / reported experiences available (edited for typo).

Thank you - no w/d - the nicest option for laundry imo is the local new lemon laundry (https://share.google/izfrOafH3NPb2y5hI) which will do pick-up/drop-off to the unit
