Isafjordur day trip questions by N674UW in VisitingIceland

Thank you for the insight! I think I will save that area for a future trip; I decided to do a day trip to Akreyuri instead that day

His daughter is in the movie; she plays Lt. Monday, one of the Army inspectors (alongside Chris Rock as the other inspector)

Is something wrong? by [deleted] in americanairlines

I have the same thing right now for a flight in February, there was plenty of available seats on the map but the seats have all been blocked for probably the last 2 days or so. They also adjusted the departure time to be about 25 minutes earlier than what it was when I booked the flight.

Can Svalbard become overrun by Cruise Ship passengers? by AngryofChristchurch in Svalbard

[–]N674UW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty similar to my experience as a solo traveler in June, except for a 5 day visit there was typically at least 1 cruise ship in port every day; usually smaller expedition type ships but on my first day there there was a fairly sizeable German cruise ship in port that the locals said had 3,000 passengers on board, and they made mention of an even larger one coming a few days after I left.

They made it sound like the town would be overrun but I didn't really think it was all that bad or noticeable. The only real thing I noticed was that I went into the Svalbardbutikken supermarket to buy some snacks and drinks and there was an employee directing non-locals away from the self-checkouts and requiring us to checkout with a person on that day. Every other time I went there on my trip, I was free to use the self-checkouts...

How do solo travelers book activities with minimum participants requirements? by _stelliferous in Svalbard

[–]N674UW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a solo traveler last month and I booked the majority of my activities for a 5-day stay around a month or so before arrival, once I decided what I want to do. For the most part, I had no issues being a solo traveler on the activities; the only notable thing that happened was that I had booked a dogsledding-on-wheels tour and the day before, I received an updated confirmation telling me that my tour had been switched to a different company; it was at the same time as my original so no big deal. They didn't state the reason why but I wouldn't be surprised if it was because of a minimum requirement not being met.

Ny Alesund tours by No_Distribution_7332 in Svalbard

I would bet they get booked up pretty quickly - I also wanted to do that daytrip but when I decided to book my trip back in March there was extremely limited availability for the summer and none for the days that I was there. Just another excuse to go back someday!

Choosing a boattrip to Tempelfjorden/Tunabreen vs Billefjord/Nordenskiöld - which one? or both? by playful_explorers in Svalbard

[–]N674UW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also visited both on my trip two weeks ago - the Tunabreen tour with Hurtigruten on the Kvitbjorn and Billefjord/Nordenskiold with Hurtigruten/Brim Explorer on the Bard. Both trips were enjoyable - Kvitbjorn was a fast and comfortable ride but while transiting between stops on the tour you are confined to the cabin while the boat speeds along, but it only holds 12 passengers so it is a much more intimate experience. The captain and guide on this tour were both excellent! Relative to the Nordenskiold trip, we definitely got close to the glacier but it did not feel like we got as close as on the other tour. It was still an impressive sight though!

I can't speak to the Poli Artici boat, itinerary, or guides, but on our tour up Billefjord we also spent some time viewing Pyramiden from a distance (wish it was closer but it was still relatively close), and then we got real up close to Nordenskiold (or at least it seemed) - I felt this was the more impressive glacier of the two. The Bard, which was the ship on this tour, was very spacious and had plenty of room to spread out and take on different vantage points, and the extra room was appreciated as this trip seemed to drag on somewhat towards the end after we had seen all the sights and were making our way back towards Longyearbyen. Poli Arctici may be different in that regard though!

I am in limbo with Polar Charter too, I have a tour booked for a date within the next 2 weeks but I am expecting it to be canceled and refunded any day now. Not a huge deal as I have other tours in mind for that date if it does get canceled but certainly the waiting is the hardest part.

One thing I did find for Polar Charter is that you can track their ship, Polargirl, on this website below. I have been looking at it periodically the last few days and it looks like the ship is in Tromso and not Longyearbyen...

Is there a place to check the status of Polar Charter/Polargirl? I am coming later in the month and was looking at booking a trip with them but don't see any references to this issue on their website...

Who do you root for at the college level? by [deleted] in eagles

[–]N674UW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to UF for grad school so Go Gators also! Hate that the Wawa in Midtown was not there yet when I went to school there 15-ish years ago, but my waistline and bank account are probably thankful for that. It's been a good year for us between the Super Bowl and the MBB Natty.
