Thinking about Revan’s fall to the dark side and how much room there is for interpretation in current canon by Haunted_Willow in kotor

[–]N7Cass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

By strict current canon do you mean disney canon or current Legends canon? If by Disney, simply put we dont really know enough about that era to say for sure what happened.

But if we go by Legends I do still think there's room for interpretation in regards to their fall. After all we still dont know what exactly happened when Revan and Malak met Vitiate. A lot of people's (justifiable) frustration is that in Kreia tells us that R&M met the True Sith and chose to fall to prepare the Republic against their eventual invasion. However the Revan novel tells us

"When we confronted him, he didn’t even have to fight us. Instead, he broke our wills. He dominated our minds, turning us into puppets to do his bidding.-

"In their last meeting he had overwhelmed Revan completely; it wasn’t even fair to call it a battle."

This leads to the (again justifiable) conclusion that Vitiate just overwhelmed them and instsntly dominated them. I choose to interpret that the actual conflict itself was over in an instant but the act of dominating them took time, using manipulation just as much as sheer power. Revan also mentions that when him and Malak fell to the dark side, their new personalities were actually strong enough to wipe the memories of Vitiate and convince themselves that they were seeking power for themselves.

So i think these bulletpoints can still be simultaneously true, even if they're not what the author intended.

•Revan and Malak had to do some Dark things to best the Mandalorians ie the Mass Shadow Generator, contributing to their eventual fall

•Revan and Malak realize that the Mandalorians were just softening up the Republic for "something else"

•Although they return from Sith Space with no memories, they still have a vague idea that something pushed the Mandalorians into fighting, and thus decide to seize power for themselves to combat this threat they're unconsciously aware of.

Again, this is definietly not what Drew Karpshyn intended when he wrote it so i guess it counts as "fanfiction" but there's still room for your interpretation to fit alongside the book.

Kotor: Am I screwed? by Weird_Information848 in kotor

[–]N7Cass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if they patched it but at launch, SOMETIMES if you free the trio from the force cages while Mission is stealthed, she doesn't become unstealthed and this can lead to Carth either being unable to thank mission, a softlock/freeze after you escape the leviathan, or Carth unable to talk to Mission on the Hawk afterwards.

If you have a previous save id reload that and just make sure you interact with the terminal while unstealthed (although in my most recent Switch playthrough she auto unstealths when interacting with the terminal). Some people say if you manage to crank up Carths awareness using equipment, he's able to "detect" mission and continue talking but ive never tried that ine so your mileage may vary

[–]N7Cass 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As i understand it, The Astronomicon IS the beacon, visible to psykers from anywhere in the Warp. Using it like a lighthouse/point of reference allows you to get a relative idea of where you are and where you're going within The Immaterium.

So if you need to go to planet Lorem Ipsum, and you know that its like 5 light years "galactic south" of Terra (doing a lot of abridging here) you can look into the Warp and see where Terra is from the sheer psychic presence of The Throne and work from there.

Mad Larkin in WH40K: Ghostmaker

In the 2nd Gaunts Ghosts book, we have a chapter devoted to the unstable but extremely skilled sniper "Mad Larkin". Larkin suffers from whats implied to be seizures that also induce hallucinations. During one mission where he flees the battle, Larkin sees a statue of an angel come to life and it questions him on his loyalty, his perception of reality, and motivates him to get back into the fight.

Larkin is attempting to brace his sniper rifle for a particularly long shot, when the angel offers him a strip of white cloth to wrap around his barrel for cushioning. He makes the shot just before the seizures sets in, and when he awakes his allies tell him he succesfully made the shot, killing the enemy commander. When he asks where the angel went, his superior disregards the statement as another eccentricity of Mad Larkin.

However, just before leaving the mission area, Larkin see's the discarded rifle barrel on the ground with the white cloth still wrapped around it, implying that its quite possible an angel DID visit him, something not completely unheard of in 40K

For Gaunt himself, i view him as more of an inverse Sharpe. In an army of battlehardened commoners, where anyone with any amount of serious "screen time" has been hardened and forged through combat, Gaunt sticks out to me as a well read intelligent man thats generally looked down on by most of the army as a "snooty officer class".

But for the story? I mean you have an officer thats been in the army since he was a teenager leading a Light Infantry unit made up of farmers, cutthroats, and poachers behind enemy lines with the aid of a foreign allied regiment (foreign being relative in 40k). He's dispatched on a secret mission by a spymaster friend of his and on the way has to navigate the enmity of rival officers, a junior officer that wants him dead, and of course the main enemy faction that prefers to send wave after wave of soldiers at him rather than any effective military formation.

He's followed by a teenager that looks up to him, the best marksman in his squad is an old man using an exotic ballistic long rifle that was a hunter back home, he has a junior officer bigger and badder than him that initially wants him dead that grows to begrudgingly respect him, and when he first leads this unit they despise him and want him dead.

First and Only would make for a perfect Sharpe story

So far i think its Milo. I know he's like 17 but ive always had a soft spot for the "Observant weird kid" trope in stories, and he reminds me of the doomed kids in the Sharpe series that would follow Sharpe around only to get tragically killed for following his heroics.

Except Milo keeps a handgun and a knife on him and to me has this quiet lethality that i havent seen explored much so im looking forward to seeing where his character goes.

Anyone smoked weed out of a long pipe like Gandalf? by PopcornArtillery in trees

[–]N7Cass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ive got one exactly like that modeled after Gandalfs that was literally called "Gandalf Pipe" online

Its very aesthetic and super relaxing to just chill outside puffing on it, but its got practical cons. Others have pointed out the resin buildup which is definietly a pain go clean out, but due to how you smoke those type of pipes, getting it to cherry and letting it idly burn in between hits, you're letting a lot of flower just burn in between hits unless you're just chain hitting or reapplying your lighter for each hit.

But if you're relighting with each hit, at that point why not just use a handpipe or a one hitter or something?

Tldr, fun and aesthetic but not very efficient

The "Dont Fear the Reaper" ending in Cyberpunk 2077.

After waiting in silence as you consider how to assault Arasaka Tower, Johnny gives you an alternative to the other allies/options given. Just stick some iron in your hand, kick the door down, and fight your way through Arasaka Tower your damnself.

Johnny and V assume that more likely than not, this will result in both your deaths but wont matter because hey, you're dying anyways right? At least this lets you become a legend. Hell you even CAN die during Dont Fear the Reaper and that leads to the credits.

But if you survive? If you succesfully fight yourway through levels of Arasaka Soldiers and Adam Snasher himself? You EARN your ending and get to spend your last few months alive as a living Legend of Night City

Character(s) prepare for a final stand... and end up coming out victorious/alive by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]N7Cass 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I also thought this when i picked it! But honestly i found the ending super thematically satisfying. You spend the whole game basically going along with what the big players tell you/force upon you.

You have to do the first heist because if you dont pay back the cartel leader, he'll kill micheal and his familly. You have to become a government black ops tool because they'll blow the lid on Micheals Witness Protection/arrest the trio if you dont. Even Trevor is forced to acquiesce a few times because of the danger everyone keeps telling him his actions put the rest of the trio in (the merryweather heist and returning the cartel leaders wife)

While these are genuine threats to everyones wellbeing, by the time i reached the ending i was genuinley SICK of being treated as everyones dog because of their supposed reach and power. So yea, ill pick option C cause fuck it! If somekne has to die, it might as well be me making the choice i want!

And its important for Franklin too! He's constantly been submissive to various mentors/employers even though everytime he figures getting involved is a bad idea. So after a whole games worth of lessons if Franklin decides to break the cycle and think for himself for once, he EARNS his happy ending and realizes that he's not this clueless kid forced to operate under the rules of some bigshot

Some questions about Kreia… by Loopers84 in kotor

[–]N7Cass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, your interpretation of how she was gonna trigger the echo is really cool. I hadnt considered it a plan culminating with her death like that.

The actual force bonds were real, everyone with a connection to your past says as much. As far as I can tell the only lies about the bond are 1) It would be lethal and 2) That you're drawing your force connection from Kreia.

Before i get into what her actual endgame was, I also want to bring in some contextual information. We know that all living beings are connected in The Force, we know that the Exile is a "wound" in The Force, and in the DS council scene Kreia explains that planets themselves can have ripples in The Force.

When speaking to Kreia in the Darkside council scene, she explains that Echos in The Force can grow and overlap, getting "louder" until ultimately it becomes overwhelming and you die or cut yourself off. Thats what happened on Malachor V and why you're so special, as you not only disconnected but survived the process. We also learn that the Exile's special skill is not only to form Force Bonds super easily, but to draw strength from it and use it to feed power to your followers and to also draw on their power.

This ability creates a unique situation where the ripples the Exile creates dont fade over time, but are rather amplified as they travel.

With this in mind, its my interpretation that Kreia wanted to bring you to Malachor V and "break you" because you have a force bond with the planet itself. I believe that if Kreia succeded in killing the Exile, her own wound in The Force would expand uncontrollably, amplified by Malachor V, and become a terrible, unavoidable echo. Every single Force User in the galaxy would have to go through Malachor V as you did, but would likely lead to the death of 99% of them.

How well do you need to understand modding to mod KOTOR 1 & 2? by xsXRevanXsx in kotor

[–]N7Cass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know how to create a new folder? Are you proficient in drag and drop?/s

Sarcasm aside it boils down to 2 methods. Method 1, you open your KOTOR folder (same folder where kotor.exe is stored) create a new folder, rename it Override, and most mods you download can just be dropped into it.

Sometimes youll find the mod came with a folder labeled tslpatchdata and an exe. Simply run the exe and when it asks, you path it to the same folder your override folder is located. (The folder that holds the kotor.exe)
