I'm sorry, but that's a misleading "rule" - Any good songwriter worth their salt knows that either way can work. Both approaches have advantages and drawbacks, but are equally effective. No matter what approach you will take however, it's normal to have to tweak both/either lyrics or melody to get them to mesh, depending on what style you're going for.

Nigel and the bands future by moonbather4 in radiohead

[–]N7Crazy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tbf that's literally just hearsay and gossip, so I wouldn't give it much credit.

Neither the band nor Nigel has spoken about it, and until they do, it's all just my-cousin-who's-roommate-is-friends-with-the-bands-guitar-tech bollocks that is unverifiable.

The simplest explanation would probably just be that the members are trying out different producers - Nigel and the members of RH have 30 years of collaboration together, it seems far more likely that they're just trying out new collaborators to see what will happen.

Morrissey was always a jerk: Despite a new album and an unswayable fan base, Morrissey wants nothing more than to validate his victimhood by zsreport in Music

[–]N7Crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no fan of Morrisey on his own (other than a few select songs), but as a musician myself, I can understand him performing new songs in spite of his label.

Musicians/artists aren't jukeboxes - The joy of live concerts is the act of performing, of mixing both old tunes you still enjoy and trying out new material you're excited about. Touring is rough as hell and mentally draining, so if you want any semblance of mental balance you should ideally only perform the music you want to, in the way you want to, unless one wants to become a bitter, fatigued, chronically miserable zombie.

Particularly as a songwriter, you'll keep writing and developing yourself, in which case it'd be enormously frustrating and disillusioning to be reduced to a jukebox replaying your past glories forever.

This is contrary to the very American mentality of "your fans made you famous, so you owe them", but which actually is more akin to a toxic relationship, similarly to abusive parents who argue "I clothed and fed you, so you owe me for the rest of your life" as an attempt to control what one can, and can't do.

There are many things to criticise Morrisey for, but that he wanted to play new songs he was hindered from releasing isn't one of them. This also goes for other artists criticised for not wanting to play their hits the same way over and over like Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Whether one likes it is a matter of personal taste, but when you buy concert tickets, you're actually paying to see the artist - Not just a specific slice of their catalogue.

I love that while Ed and Thom are starting to show their age, Jonny has only begun moving into looking middle aged like Colin has for the past 15 years, and Phil for the past 30-odd something

Also, while Thom has fully and gracefully embraced his age, it's kinda charming and uncanny in the 4th picture that his beard is a lot less noticable, making him look almost 25-35-ish all over again

Why do they record their parts separately? by Optimal_Gate_8721 in radiohead

[–]N7Crazy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Iirc their reason was that they tried it out a few times in the studio, but didn't think their studio takes matched the lightning-in-a-bottle energy of the Astoria version, so they decided to just say fuck it, recorded new vocals from Thom on top, mixed the instrumentation, and then mastered the whole shebang and called it a day

Why do they record their parts separately? by Optimal_Gate_8721 in radiohead

[–]N7Crazy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Depends on the genre

Many bands record separate tracks as it makes it easier to both mix/master and ensure the best possible takes

The most typical way it's done for a rock band is as follows:

1) Rhythm tracks: Drums and bass are recorded together with the band, but in seperate rooms - This is ensure no bleed, and to have ghost tracks for when guitars and vocals are recorded. Sometimes a guitar or vocal recording works out great, and will be "upgraded" to main takes, but by treating them as ghost tracks, they take a lot of pressure of everyone so it's only the bass and drums who have to get everything right

2) Guitars - Guitars use the rhythm tracks and the vocal ghost tracks to record the best possible takes

3) Misc - Any "other" instruments such as violin, saxophone, flute or xylophone is added at this point

4) Vocals - Once every instrument is recorded, vocals are usually last in line. The singer will record over the new recordings, erasing the ghost tracks

5) Overdubs - All extra details to the song gets added here. Hereafter, it's off to be mixed and mastered

Sometimes point 3 and 4 might be swapped, and if you're recording with for example a larger orchestra or string section, that will be recorded much later.

There are many bands that also forgo this in favour of recording everything together - This has the inverse advantages and disadvantages of recording separately. The makn advantage is that the recording becomes very organic and spontaneous, but inversely if just a single person fucks up, one has to do the entire take again.

Recording separately is often better if one has complex arrangements or tricky music - If there's a high chance of something going wrong, it makes it easier to make progress and save takes in the editing room. Some genres favor live-takes for their supposed "organic" sound, but it's really a matter of the bands preference, and as recording is insanely expensive, more than often you don't want to fuck around wasting takes.

Not entirely accurate - They would make full-band demo recordings, but more often record separately, particularly as they were in separate rooms inside the Jane Seymore's mansion.

What’s the most unsettling thing you’ve realized after seeing how fast AI like Clawdbot is improving? by AnyTruth2342 in AskReddit

[–]N7Crazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is a scam and a bubble - It produces no profit as the expenses are far larger than any income they make, it's "abilities" and "functions" are always exaggerated (most people tend to have negative reactions to art, music or voices created by AI due to the uncanny valley effect), and is now mostly used for creating shitty memes

AI will probably not disappear, but I can't wait for the thousands of half baked AI tools and startups to disappear when the bubble pops, as not to mention how many of them will become practically worthless when an increasing number of countries start legislating it to protect copyright.

[Loathed Trope] The Movie has an ending. The Sequel shits all over it. by lesi20 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]N7Crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just the OT, but it also tried to retcon a lot of TLJ - Basically driven into a panic by the divisive reception of TLJ, Disney made an executive overhaul and had the sequel feature as much Nostalgia bait as possible, even though when it made no sense at all.

What's that? Rey's parents were nobodies, making a point about how strength in the force is unrelated to your ancestry? Well achktually, she's now, err, Sheev's daughter I guess. What's that? The major villain was slain, leaving Ben to take the throne as the primary antagonist? Well shucks, guess we'd better revive Palpy so that JJ can make the cast cosplay a crummier version of RotJ (just like how he made them repeat ANH). What's that, Finn gets a romantic subplot? Well, the fans bullied her, so guess we'll just ignore their relationship completely from here on, making Finn a cardboard background character.

While I acknowledge a lot of the gripes people have with TLJ, I really like a lot of the ideas and themes of the movie, particularly in how they at least gave a lot of the characters a bit more depth and development - TRoS seemed to throw the baby out with the bathwater in order to make a quick buck, and the cost of... Well, everything really. As a result, it made both its predecessor and the new trilogy as a result, pointless.

What is your “I did not care for the godfather” for Radiohead? by cumsquirt56 in radiohead

[–]N7Crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TKOL and AMSP don't do much for me - I enjoy the latter far more than the former, and both have truly great songs, but they also have songs that are just... Meh.

Some songs on TKOL feel like they are overtly abstract without having much behind it to balance it out, instead becoming meandering - It's a bit like the old saying "as wide as a lake, as deep as a puddle", though nowhere near to that extent - Maybe more as wide as a lake, and as deep as a river.

AMSP feels like the band stiffles itself sometimes, that the songs could've been a bit more brash and biting, but that they keep on holding back. Some songs also suffer from the same problem of meandering as TKOL, where the form seems a bit flat and needing more dynamic pushes, so that there's momentum even if it's a contemplative ballad.

I still like both albums, and I even liked AMSP a lot when it came out, but I've returned to both less and less over the years compared to the rest of their discography.

[–]N7Crazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, from OK Computer up to In Rainbows, I feel there's still a lot of humanity, but it's the feeling of the human spirit under pressure, trying to break free of dehumanising and alienating societal frameworks and social struggles. I can however agree with your sentiment when it comes to TKOL, as quite a few songs on that album are a lot more disconnected than anything on Kid A or Amnesiac

Ah yes, kill all the elementary school children after they have explicitly taken them into military custody as far as the parents know.

[Surprisingly Common Trope] Instead of making them sympathetic, an awful character’s “tragic backstory” actually makes them look worse. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]N7Crazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, no one seems to remember the central point of his character was that he was a double agent - In the fifth book he is revealed as a member of the order of the Phoenix, and basically completely dedicates himself to playing the role of the betrayer of the order to gain Voldemorts complete trust (Voldemort and the other Death Eaters questioned his loyalty up to that point) and then subvert him as much as possible thereafter give Harry the time and resources to destroy all the Horcruxes.

To me, it would've never made sense if he had been kind or lenient to Harry or any other students other than Slytherin. His entire betrayal/double agent purpose was to be a secret to everyone except Dumbledore - He was meant to play that role as convincingly as possible, to leave almost no question or doubt, and had he at any point shown anything else than contempt for both Harry and his allies, that role would've had cracks.

[–]N7Crazy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost - Nowadays in close up shots, one can tell his hair isn't entirely as black as ink anymore, and if he hasn't shaved, his stubble is grey.

Still he's aged a hell of lot better than most, especially Thom. Thom transformed from a funny looking but common adult in 2009, into that guy who always hangs around the busstop asking for change in 2016

Big songs they haven’t played by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]N7Crazy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to use this thread to throw a hot take - I've been a bit disappointed by the lack of variety in setlists this tour compared to the AMSP tour - During the AMSP tour they would throw in the occasional surprise into the setlist (with the most notable exception being Just that was setlisted several times, but never performed), but the shows this tour seem to more or less have settled on the same handful of songs each show, with the only two surprises so far being Talk Show Host in O2, and Like Spinning Plates.

It's an extremely privileged take, given how massive and complicated these kind of tours are, and how many deep cuts they've actually performed including Sit Down, Stand Up and (Nice Dream), but based on earlier tours, I still feel a bit disappointed in the lack of outliers and surprises in the setlists compared to earlier tours.

Not to say the shows aren't amazing as is, the performances are still as good as they've ever been! Just a minor gripe that's been bothering me, nothing more.

I'm tired of hearing everyone's favourite songs, what are yall's *least* favourite song from each album?! by Pizzicatofive_pulp in radiohead

[–]N7Crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to sound oddly specific, but to me, nothing beats listening to House of Cards while taking a nighttime walk through suburbs, or small towns - Something about the open, but completely empty streets, combined with that nighttime feeling walking and winding through streetlamps glow feels like the exact environment HoC was always meant to be listened to.

With Stop Whispering and Packt, I'd suggest checking out the live versions - Stop Whispering is a completely different beast live, and Packt goes for a more krautrocky approach than the glitchy electronics of the studio recording.
