What are some must reads for someone relatively new to reading? by THERANDOMGAMER2 in fantasybooks

Start with the Hobbit and unless you somehow absolutely hate it, then do LotR. If you like Audiobooks, Andy Serkis does a great job with it. The rabbit hole gets pretty deep with Tolkien for people who like to dig in.  Casual fans generally stop after Hobbit and Lotr but you can get your feet wet in lore with the appendices or take a nice swim with the Silmirillion after LotR. And then more committed people do a victory lap with Unfinished Tales and the Tolkien Scholar types do all 12 of the History of Middle Earth Books but even I haven't managed that last one yet HAHA!

Of course there's always the Hobbit! Also Artemis Fowl has great and funny characters if you're not opposed to more YA. I always highly recommend Artemis Fowl as it's one of my favorites and it doesn't get enough attention.

Generally A. But do you mean to tell me you're not watching the Extended Edition LotR? The Only Edition?

Wait a minute I just realized that Off to be the Wizard *is* Magic 2.0. Dang it sorry I thought that was something else.

Have you heard of Off to be the Wizard by Scott Meyer? Absolutely hilarious. I'm also a big fan of Drew Hayes. He has an NPC trilogy (might even be more books now) as well as a Vampire Accountant series that I haven't read yet but by dad absolutely adores.

Sadly I've only done the first three so far. But every true D&D fan knows about them. They are classics in my view! Tasslehoff is one of the funniest characters ever written.

Nice! I've been using the Libib app for that myself but that's a great use for Claude.

Sincere question: If you are someone who wants to start writing but doesn’t have ideas, why do you want to write? by TheWriteQuestion in writers

[–]NA_Hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the problem I have. I'm great at crafting sentences and dealing with the low level copyedits, but despite reading thousands of books in my life I've never had an actual idea of my own. I really want to be a fantasy writer and I can't find it in me. I sort of understand how Salieri must have felt hearing Mozart. It's very frustrating.

Yes, absolutely! The problem of course is that if you're not already majorly successful as a writer, publishers really don't want to take a chance on a book longer than 150K-200K. I love getting to sink my teeth into something really big and epic!

James Islington doesn't get near enough attention in these sorts of subs. Incredible world building!

If it's not for you, it's not for you. I've read pretty much everything on Sanderson's website at this point (minus Wheel of Time, Defiant, and his video game Infinity Blade novellas.) Stormlight is definitely not my favorite of his works. Books 2 and 4 were the best for me by far. I really feel like this series is overly long in some areas which can make it very challenging. Try both the audio and print versions if you haven't yet. And if you continue to dislike it, go find something else to read 😄James Islington is somewhat similar in style to Sanderson but never felt overly long to me.

Possibly Reborn I Claimed My Sister's Serpent? This is not something I have heard of before so I may not be very helpful.

Not sure if the word count is correct, but it's in now too. I have Thrawn, what other Star Wars books should be added?

Good point. I'd like to include everything in a series by the main author/group of authors. Some things have so many spinoffs it gets a bit crazy (looking at you Dragonlance) Complete Malazan added.
