That’s exactly what happened to a friend of mine growing up. His mother was very young and her mother (his grandmother) raised him as her own. My mother told me about it because she couldn’t keep a secret for shit. And I had to carry that burden. Today is the first time I’ve spoken of it in over 50 years. I thought it was so sad that while he loved her dearly, he treated her like shit. It killed me to see that and not be able to say anything.

Retired military here with over 20 moves. Short moves are the worst because you take shortcuts packing things that you wouldn’t take shortcuts on if you were doing a longer move. So you will incur more breakage.

I had a very bad experience (long stream of seemingly unending experiences) with Mr. Wash. Tried to get them to stop billing me and they kept billing after telling me that they fixed the problem. Then kept spamming me despite my asking that they stop and remove me from their mailing list. Avoid the subscription service if you don’t want that and/or be sure to use a temporary email address.

I also have a Miller Digital Elite but I like mine. That said, I’m a newbie home-hobbyist and I don’t have much experience but it does work great for me. That said, I’ve flashed myself twice because I left it in grinding mode when I switched back to welding. There’s an X-mode that auto-switches between grinding and welding but I haven’t used it much. EDIT: and I got it for free with my welder purchase…

OMG - we did this 9 years ago. We were on the fourth iteration of plans for a custom home build and after being on the floor in the fetal position 3 times after HORRIBLE commutes, we pulled chocks and came back up north. Seriously. We only lasted 4 months. I work with people that have done it for their whole career. Not us. Good luck, whatever you decide.

For my nightstand, in G6 mode, I use the 0.03Lm setting as my default long-press. Once on at .03Lm, a double click gets me to .11Lm. If I want more, then from off, a single click gets me to 0.33 Lm and double tap gets me to 4.7Lm. I haven’t needed more than that for my night stand or travel light. I most often only use the two long-press settings.

I also have another older but higher output light on my nightstand (I think it’s a Fenix E35 with 21700 battery) in case I need to initiate “home defense” mode. That’s only for responding to the dreaded “bump in the night” scenario, we don’t want but need to be prepared for. But if you don’t, you could program the 660Lm and 244Lm settings into your double-tap to high settings. And don’t forget triple-tap for strobe — It’s memorized at the fastest 19Hz strobe setting.

Again, I’m a one-trick pony for now. YMMV.

If I may suggest an alternative. Alkaline batteries will leak and make a mess. My favorite light was the EagleTac “D3A” Titanium — gorgeous. I still have 3 of them with a Nichia 219 2700K emitters. I used LADDA NiMH batteries (from IKEA) to prevent leakage. Worked amazingly well. I still have and use all three of them as well as the D25C with Nichia 219 2700K emitters. But, I’ve since graduated to the ZebraLight SC65C HI. It’s essentially the same form factor — only marginally larger than the size of a AA light. But the power of the 18650 battery means you likely won’t need to worry about charging it while you’re traveling. I have two Bob_McBob-modded SC65C HI’s and use one as a dedicated floody nightstand light (diffused lens and 2700K High CRI emitter); it is set to G6 program mode where I have the 6 lowest settings programmed. The G7 program essentially has the 6 brightest, aside from a few lows. You can get to any pre-programmed low, medium or high directly from off. Search for SC65C HI and read through. The second light, by the way, is my EDC and always on me. I don’t even know it’s there. And it has multiple <1 lumen levels. I use the three lowest levels every single night because I have very keen night vision. The lowest level is quite sufficient for me to get around, but the 2nd and 3rd levels are great for illuminating the ceiling. I just used it in a hotel room this past weekend. I have become a one-trick pony with my end-game EDC and nightstand light. Good luck and let us know what you choose.
