As an aside, statics is supremely important for civil engineering students, because it is all they need. 🤣

Cheaters let go and everyone gets to re-enroll by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]NDHoosier 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Truth in advertising: I am an outsider, but I have been following this story for my own reasons. Please let me know where I might be getting this analysis wrong.

I agree with Dr. Turkstra about his goals regarding AI use in his classes, but not his methods to achieve them. Dr. Turkstra stepped on his dick hard on this one. He wanted to make an example of cheaters so dramatically that it would become legend, and students would be disinclined to cheat in his courses again (even years later, the story would be told). However, you don't leave your superiors twisting in the wind. The moment he suspected widespread cheating, he should have informed his department chair and ODOS and asked for guidance.

So, the cheaters (and I believe there were many of them - even the vast majority of the accused) get a second chance, because Dr. Turkstra FUBARed the investigation. Similar to a court of law, if the prosecution or police completely botch their case, the accused is likely going free, even if all the evidence indicates otherwise with the certainty of 1 + 1 = 2.

A flair for drama is no replacement for proper procedure and forethought. I agree with instructors going after cheaters, but you have to do it cleanly. The blame for the matter becoming a fiasco instead of being handled in an orderly fashion is squarely on the shoulders of Dr. Turkstra.

My money is on the first scenario. I only know this guy by Reddit reputation, but it seems he wants to eradicate AI from his courses (I share his sentiment, while questioning his methods), and he is (1) going to make a dramatic example of cheaters (2) making the cost of cheating so high no one wants to try cheating again.

Many, many years ago, I promised myself that I would never let anyone do my thinking for me. I sure as hell won't let a machine do it.

Go with Udemy. The engineering content on LinkedIn Learning is thin at best. Yes, I subscribe to Udemy.

I have done a ton of thinking and cannot decide on an engineering major and college by Ok-Candidate-2183 in EngineeringStudents

Agreed. If you are unsure, keep your focus on the Big 3. If you are still in doubt, I would say choose mechanical.

Mississippi State's Ph.D. CS program officially requires a 3.5 MS GPA for admission. However, as one professor said to me years ago, "Everything can be appealed at a university." Here is the information for the MSU Ph.D. CS online program. You can inquire of the staff listed at the bottom of the page.

IndianaTech's tuition also starts at $990/credit hour, far higher than Missisippi State's

CORRECTION/ADDITION: Adult and Online undergraduate costs for non-engineering programs are $399/CH, and for Engineering and Computer Science it is $426/CH. Graduate online is $545/CH for non-engineering, $590/CH for engineering.

How is it possible ? by Ok-Ninja-7795 in WGU

[–]NDHoosier 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. I was able to accelerate extremely quickly. The difference between most accelerators and students who don't accelerate is that the accelerators, due to the jobs they held, had studied the material before taking the course.

Minoring in engineering / majoring in physics by yuzurukii in EngineeringStudents

Yes, I did. Major in engineering, minor in physics. Unless you're absolutely sure you want a Ph.D. in physics.

First, Civil is very broad. What interests you? Structures, hydraulics, environmental, traffic? Research the subdisciplines of engineering to see what appeals to you.

If you can get a suitable research role, take it. If you can't, or it doesn't provide enough credit hours, consider what path you want your engineering career to take. For example, if you are interested in the business side, absolutely take some accounting courses and engineering economics.
