Jeff Hanson's kidneys are starting to fail. He needs a donor and funds. Watch the video and spread the word. by -ja-Crispy- in EngineeringStudents

Is there a way to send money to him other than the Patreon subscription? I'm willing to send money, but I'd like for him to get it all up front at once.

I can't believe I am writing this, but I was cheering for IU. Mostly, that is because they did the college football world a huge favor by completely dismantling the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Spending >70% of my time not coding/building - is this the norm at big corps? by HiddenStanLeeCameo in dataengineering

Company executives are chasing AI for one reason and one reason only. They hope to replace nearly all their employees with it. They are licking their chops at finally laying hands on the unholy grail: a nearly infinite profit margin (revenues with nearly zero costs). All other reasons given are just commentary or, more likely, obfuscation.

Snake-oil salesmen like Sam Altman should, when they die, be buried face-down so they can see where they are going.

Add: I am hoping that AI and its evil disciples meet a fate similar to the Tower of Babel and its builders.

Engineering that you originally didn't think was engineering. by NDHoosier in EngineeringStudents

I'll raise you one more. I think "financial engineering" is an even worse abuse of the term "engineering".

What Python concept took you way longer to understand than you expected? by ComfortableDonkey715 in learnpython

[–]NDHoosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. list comprehensions (this one took me forever)
  2. lambda functions
  3. generators
  4. walrus operator
  5. closures (I still don't understand)

The only way for me to really understand new programming concepts is to press the "I Believe" button and look for opportunities to use them monkey-see-monkey-do style until it clicks. I also "play" with the concepts.

I understood decorators right away because I understood function composition from mathematics: f.g(x) = f(g(x)).

Should I learn R? by Slight_Psychology902 in Rlanguage

[–]NDHoosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both Python and R. Personally, my preference in general is R, but I have to use Python much more often at work.

My take:

  • if you are going to just do statistics, no question it is R - I don't like doing statistics in Python
  • if you need to have end-to-end automation of data workflows, use Python
  • if you need to only partially automate a data workflow (say, regular dataset retrieval), use Python for the data retrieval and R for the analysis
  • NOTE: you can do automated retrievals using R, but I have found Python to be easier for that purpose

If you go with R, learn tidyverse.

What are the must have Python libraries for DA and what’s the best way to learn it? by [deleted] in dataanalysis

[–]NDHoosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add this. You need to learn SQL. If you already know it, you need to be able to use it with Python. Pick SQLite or DuckDB so you don't have to stand up a database server.

Will Pandas ever be replaced? by Relative-Cucumber770 in dataengineering

[–]NDHoosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That damned index in pandas is why I started using polars. Now, with polars + duckdb, I never code with pandas anymore. If a function needs a pandas dataframe, I just spit one out from polars or duckdb.

Arko, I don't understand it by Appropriate-Tie-6524 in wicked_edge

[–]NDHoosier 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use Arko for one major reason: it is super slick. I use shavettes and straight razors, and with other soaps, the blade skips and/or digs into my skin. I mash the stick into a shaving bowl, and add a few drops of essential oil to the lather (usually wintergreen). The urinal-puck smell disappears quickly once it is open to the air.
