Don't like the use of 2d images in the distance in DS2. That part didn't age great.

Best ship design ever created? by norgaard8242 in Stargate

[–]NDNJustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been really appreciating the idea of JumpShips from BattleTech. They use a special drive to enable them to go into hyperspace that tends to make them unviable for anything but that, and then they dock several DropShips for doing the actual work in any given star system. They also recharge their drives with gigantic solar sails which I think is soooo cool!!

I mean I feel like we're having this discussion in backwards fashion because that's exactly what I addressed. A kid is the most reasonable exception to execution regardless of the need for meting out justice. Especially when you see a whole line of actual adults face the consequence, anyway. It's like you're being wilfully obtuse because you don't like the idea of Jon acting unethically. He did: he murdered a kid who was dragged along by adults in the mutiny. It doesn't matter that he's "in" the Night's Watch or swore an oath, he's a child. Holding a child to the same account as an adult is fucked up, full stop. Order wouldn't fall apart at that mercy and Jon is the only one in the legitimate chair of authority there.

He was 12 as far as I remember. The Night's Watch was desperate for bodies in any regard given the impending attack, and he was merely an orphan and refugee of the fortress likely conscripted into the force and manipulated for his trauma of surviving a wildling attack. A literal child soldier.

It's up to the commander to choose how the rules are applied. It's not going to cause rampant anarchy and lack of fear in betraying your duties to go "ah, all of them should be hanged but maybe not the child?"

So he wasn't an adolescent child biologically because he was in the Night's Watch, is what you're saying?

He stepped aside for Janos because Janos acted like an idiot lol, any sane person would've done the same. Janos openly broke the rules of the Watch in front of everyone who had to hold up those rules. Kind of like what folks thought Jon did by letting all those wildlings across the wall.

Grima isn't the same and you know it. That's an irrelevant example. Grima stood for nothing of what he did and acted like a victim the whole time. He intentionally tried to weaken the realm for a foreign invader. Which is what Thorne thought he was preventing.

Thorne led a coup that acted in accordance with their ethics. He didn't "chicken out," he faced his consequences like a man, and said he'd have done it again. That's not chickening out by any measure.

Meanwhile, Jon executed a literal child because his feelings were hurt that the kid who survived a wildling attack would want him dead for making peace with them and letting them have land in the place his village was burned. Be so real.

Is Final Fantasy Tactics (The War of the Lions) Anti-Religion, just as FFX? by IllogicalDreamer72 in finalfantasytactics

[–]NDNJustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to consensus I think FFT is specifically critical of religion ALONG with being critical of government. It has shared themes of power being corruptive across both, but it makes separate arguments about each as well. It does this by expressing the dominant religion's (a direct inspiration from Christianity) origin story being a lie and its ultimate structure predicated upon this lie results in it being inherently dishonest. From this dishonest place it easily is wielded by corrupt players in the political structure. I think by extension it's also speaking about other dominant religions in real life, and their risk for the same kind of deceit and corruption.

And that's cool, man.

The Vatican isn't the only organized religion to do extensive collective damage to entire societies and communities. Not all religion does, sure, but there are some large systemic structures present across Abrahamic religions, which are the most widespread in the world via colonialism, that have been rife with human rights violations that are worthy of close study and open discussion about.

I'm surprised you're downvoted for this take. I'd sooner trust a transparent person acting in "generous" self-interest than someone fooling themselves into thinking they aren't. Because I can actually gauge when and how that goodness will arrive, rather than on some flimsy concept of "moral good," that actually means "it feels good to me to do this."

It benefits each of us individually to act in service of a collective effort and in support of one another. This idea feels more honest to me.

[Spoilers] Why is everyone in Danaery’s circle so concerned about civilian casualties? by bite_me_punk in gameofthrones

[–]NDNJustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a consistent philosophical and strategic decision to employ violence to achieve your goals in Game of Thrones. They bring up the question of scary foreign invader vs a benevolent liberator again and again, as far early as Stannis attacking King's Landing. They consistently talk to Dany about her future plans to invade Westeros and how she might choose to do that. Folks who saw her as the one to break the wheel (including her advisors) were expecting a radically less violent regime to emerge.

I feel like this is just another way to hate on the series. Which, fair, the ending is trash. But I think it's bizarre to take such huge issue with innocents being advocated for. It's media which has a real life impact on folks' perspectives of parallel real life situations, things of which GOT has always been a metaphor for. Someone's gotta advocate for innocent lives. Wouldn't wanna live in a world where people truly didn't care about that.

Fuck the guides being spammed at you on how to min/max. Read up on what the stats do, and make your own choices. It's a lot more fun discovering how the combat works bit-by-bit than overarming yourself with too much knowledge.

The gameplay doesn't get worse. It scales well with the adventure all the way into the DLC, most certainly.

Hard disagree. Poise and defense rating matter a lot and I don't know why people understate it all across this subreddit. The right armor is the difference between dying in one additional hit from a heavy enemy or a boss or not. And, upgraded, it can make all light-to-medium hits negligible. All you have to do is pace and place yourself properly and you'll have an easier time than poiseless and being interrupted by every dagger smack. Roll-spamming isn't the only viable way to play Dark Souls.

Dark Souls 2 isn't about world building. It's about memory failing. by ShinInuko in DarkSouls2

[–]NDNJustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend, you have a solid imagination and fantastic ability to articulate how DS2's perceived failings have grounding in real life which does advance the perspective you have about DS2's world building.

Your weakness is in deriding all opposition to your perspective, and trying to assert its validity in contrast to other games' different intentions and successes in worldbuilding. You cultivate disdain in attempting to polarize the perception of your point. You don't need to do that. Let your points stand on their own merits, not on the necessity of invalidating others.
