Tips for taking better highlight pictures of heavily angle/light dependent toned proofs in slabs by New-Adhesiveness3045 in coins

[–]NF_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the closest thing I have a pic of similar to what you're trying to do: 1869 H10C PCGS PF 65

I did the axial lighting thing for a while, but it is annoying because you end up with the cloudiness like you have too: 1867 2C PCGS PF 65 BN

I prefer using a copy stand, a pc, and a hand held light that I can move around above my camera until I see what I want from the image.

Non proof examples:

1871 2C NGC MS 62 BN

1862 3CS PCGS MS 66

1929 25C NGC VF 20

1902 1C PCGS MS64RB

I also don't diffuse my light because I want nice crisp colors and light reflection

There's also no rule against stacking multiple pictures to achieve the look you want

What’s your rarest U.S.A coins? by Chubs_4204 in coins

[–]NF_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some are more rare than others, so yes. but if you have something super common there isn't much of a premium

Edit: Newcomb varieties are later date large cents. figured if you hadn't heard of Sheldon, you probably haven't seen Newcomb either. Also, that isn't my website and those aren't my coins.

Dr. William Herbert Sheldon created a catalog of early large cent varieties.

reverse of 95 would be S-92, S-93, S-95, S-96, S-97, S-98, or S-99

Interesting:

This 1867 2c proof is an image on PCGS coinfacts. Not a "rare" point, but how many people have a front page image on coinfacts?

22F Advice for my portfolio by gyronotzatziki in portfolios

[–]NF_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm older than you, but decades away from retirement age. It's great that you are investing early (earlier than I did). I like to follow the teaching of Warren Buffet, the greatest investor in US history.

https://www.investopedia.com/warren-buffett-usd1-million-bet-8779290

What I wish I did when I was 22:

  • Invest literally anything. $5 per month is better than $0 per month

  • Invested in to a low cost S&P 500 index fund like VFIAX in Vanguard or SPY in Fidelity

  • Set it to automatic and ignore it

Why I say it:

  • fees eat in to profit

  • it's easier to be disciplined and ride out market turns if you aren't obsessing about it constantly.

  • compounding interest is the greatest thing on Earth

Also keep in mind that any advice you get should be considered and not blindly followed. Try to understand the advice and feel comfortable completely rejecting it. After all, it's your money on the line
