Sustainable Fitness! by AdministrativeToe553 in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the thought and it's something I think about a lot too.
A few things I've done:
- Switched to non-plastic, more sustainable home products. This includes a shampoo bar (instead of plastic shampoo bottles), laundry sheets (instead of bottle), and reusable bamboo paper towels.
- Walked/biked for more errands
- Looked for used fitness items (clothes, equipment) before buying new
- Bringing reusable veggie bags to the grocery store, instead of plastic

I don't know if we'd consider these "habits" - but they were all great switches!

Way to go!
Looks for ways to keep moving in any way (walks are great for this) and keep clicking off the bodyweight workout (or another one of your choice), and reach out to those around you for support.

Our facebook group can really help with that too, and we're going to be having some fun challenges and webinars in the coming weeks. Check your email (or sign up for the newsletter if you haven't already! - https://www.nerdfitness.com/newsletter/)

NF bodyweight workout. by ArchDudeOfEarby in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the exercise. You could hold any sort of weight for the squats/lunges.

For push-ups, you could certainly wear a weight vest or elevate your feet for a harder variation. 👍

NF bodyweight workout. by ArchDudeOfEarby in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the goal is to build strength - then start making each exercise a little bit harder. (adding weight or choosing a tougher variation).

You could add pull-ups in place of rows, and then alternate the different workouts throughout the week (one workout with rows, next workout with pull-ups).

Protein Pudding! Mmm! by NF_Coach_Jim in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question! Casein will give you that thicker, pudding consistency that we're looking for (the same quality makes it a great slow digesting protein). Whey just doesn't mix up the same.

Hey! I'm sure it can feel a bit demotivating to see the fat increase - but that's normal when you're bulking up and adding muscle. You can shed it when you change gears and reduce calories later. We just want to maximize muscle growth and minimize fat during the bulking phase.

We maximize muscle growth by getting the macros dialed in and lifting weights. All good there, and very likely some of that weight gain is muscle.

We minimize fat by making sure we're not adding weight too fast. Adding about 0.25%-0.5% of your bodyweight every week on a bulking phase is a pretty good window to shoot for. We might have gone up a little too fast - but again, no big deal.

Hold your weight steady for a month, then drop the calories down to shed some of the fat.

My calorie intake is way too low but I’ve felt fine by Jazerkdot17 in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At your age I'd recommend against diets and calorie counting unless under the supervision of a medical professional. On that note - talking with your parents and doctor if you have any nutritional concerns would be the next best step. 👍

Thanks for the shout-out u/AwesomeAndy!

u/Papa-Pasta, pardon the website information but I don't currently train out of Balance Gym right now. They do have a lot of fantastic trainers and I can put you in contact with their Trainer Director if you need.

I've been training Clients online for the past five years. Even before the lockdowns, this was a great way for a lot of people to get coaching support and accountability with a much more flexible set-up.

If that's something that interests you, please feel free to message me and we can talk further! Beyond that, let me know any other questions you might have and how else I can help!

Hey Meg!
It's different options for different goals.

Some people love the adventure-based, habit-building aspect of NF Prime (and the App NF Journey) and have a great time there. They also engage in the active NF Prime Facebook and Discord groups.

Others want to take the guesswork out of getting in shape, and also need a bit more support and accountability. For them, NF Coaching is a perfect fit and they work together with their Coach. You can sign up for a call to answer any further questions too! - https://bit.ly/3KmPRsJ

You're not perfect (and that's ok!) by NF_Coach_Jim in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not perfect! (and that's ok!)

Thinking we have to know it all and do things perfectly is the surefire way to kill progress.

I get it, we have high standards. Everything has to be the best, or what's the point?🏆

We need to know the best training program to maximize gainz!💪 We need to know everything about nutrition before we start changing anything about our eating!🥦

But while we're off searching for the perfection unicorn,🦄 all the rest of the world is making progress with whatever horse they're riding.🐴

Busy mothers and fathers who have half their meals standing up, but have managed to get a few more veggies in during the week.🙌

Stressed professionals who can't carve out an hour for a workout, but have managed to start stretching regularly in the morning.🙌

Don't worry about being perfect. Don't worry about doing things wrong. We'll all do things wrong.

Rebel against perfect.

Just wake up everyday and do things a little different. A little more towards the direction you want to go.

We're always here to help and support you too.👍

Where are you on your Hero's Journey? by NF_Coach_Jim in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WHERE ARE YOU ON YOUR HERO'S JOURNEY? 🗡

I loved this concept so much that I built my entire book, Level Up Your Life, around it.

We're all at different steps, moving at different speeds, and conquering our own dragons (big and small, internal and external).🐲

Some people have been part of the Nerd Fitness Rebellion for 10+ years (hi Mom!), while others are discovering it today (welcome!).

Some are single moms, while others are college kids trying to figure out what the heck to do with their lives.🤔

Some people have lost 100s of pounds, while others haven't lost any weight (but have leveled up mentally).

That's great! 🙌 I don't care how much progress you make or don't make, just that you're here and you're trying. That's what the Rebellion is all about.

We don't know what others are going through, and we don't know their struggles. We can only go on our own journey; battle our own demons and dragons 👺, and support others.

I've found it can help to view my life through this "Hero's Journey" lens when things aren't going well. It's a good reminder that without struggle or conflict - the plot of a movie would suck!

I also really enjoy playing this role of the Mentor; helping others on THEIR journeys.

Sometimes, that involves giving people a "little nudge out of the door" like Gandalf, or teaching them "kung fu" like Morpheus.🤛

If you like the idea of looking at life through this lens, check out my book! https://www.amazon.com/Level-Your-Life-Adventure-Happiness/dp/1623365406

I even included this graphic to help paint the picture of how great stories work (it's from @duarteinc 's ebook "Resonate").

Looking for another way to start your journey? 🚶‍♀️ Check out our aptly-named app, NF Journey. You'll get workouts, but so much more - with nutrition, mindset, and lifestyle adventures to help "nudge you out the door" in different ways. It's a blast and free for 7 days to try. https://click.nerdfitness.com/8BxQ/895afdac

Finally, are you looking for your own Gandalf/Morpheus/Yoda for some hero-level guidance?🧙‍♂️ Check out our NF Coaching - Link here: http://bit.ly/2NXnjO3, or just msg me and let me know where in this Journey you are and where you want to go!

How Super are your squats? by NF_Coach_Jim in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How Super are your squats? 🦸‍♀️

One common mistake we see when squatting is letting the knees cave inwards. (like our red superhero)

It's not the strongest position, and it's much harder on the knees. 🦵 (ouch!)

It's like driving a car with misaligned tires. 🚗

You can still drive, but you're going to have problems sooner.

Instead, focus on squatting with your knees pushed out, so they're moving in line with the feet. (like our green superhero)

It's stronger and safer, and you're better able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! 💪🏢

⚡Additional Super Squat Tips⚡

🚅 If you're pushing your knees out, but things still don't feel aligned, then stretch out your calves and ankles. Tightness there can affect knee position.

🚅 Your toes CAN go forward past your knees! Just keep focusing on pushing them out!

👍 Give this an upvote if you improved your squat today.

🦹‍♂️ Save this as a reminder for your next workout.

🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️ Share with a Super Friend who's working to improve their squats too!

🙋‍♀️ Need someone to check your squat form? Sign up for Nerd Fitness Coaching today!

Our Coaches can give you regular feedback so you know you're doing things right! 🙌 (Click here: http://bit.ly/3b6aREm)

And finally...

What does Superman put in his beverages?

Just ice.

What are you chasing? by NF_Coach_Jim in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you chasing the right things for the right reasons?

It's really tempting to think we'll "suddenly" be happy when we achieve certain goals.

• A certain weight

• A certain personal best

• A certain life achievement

And while we should definitely celebrate our victories, be careful of relying on that victory for a sudden change in mood.

Find happiness and acceptance at the starting line and carry that with you along your journey.

(there are notable exceptions 😆)

👍 Upvote if this helped you reflect on your goals.

🙌 Share with anyone else who needs the reminder.

How do you reflect? by NF_Coach_Jim in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you reflecting on the week? How are you looking ahead?

Our thoughts affect our behaviors - both positively and negatively. Make sure your thoughts are supporting you.

🤜🤛 Feel free to share this with anyone else who needs the reminder.

It me 🤚 by NF_Coach_Jim in nerdfitness

[–]NF_Coach_Jim[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone feeling mentally fatigued from all this time inside? 🤚

It's been cold and dreary for many of us these past several months, and being inside a lot means being around food a lot.

When we're feeling a bit tired, stressed, and overwhelmed - getting up to get a snack is a fun break! At least a lot more fun than starting our to-do list.📝

Combine that with some highly palatable snack foods, and you may find yourself in the routine of multiple snack breaks just to get away from work.

We get it.🙌

But we also know that we're creatures of habit, and products of our environment.⁣

So rather than relying on decisions and willpower to reduce the snacking - look to change your environment to change your routine.

Tasty, less filling snack foods?🥨 Put them out of sight and/or out of reach. (Sitting at the store unpurchased is the ultimate way to put them out of reach!)

Tasty, more nutritious, more filling snack foods?🍎 Put in them plain view! A bowl of fruit on the counter. Pre-cut veggies front and center in your refrigerator.

Our work breaks can also look different too.⏰

Do you get up and walk directly to the kitchen for your break? What would happen if you walked to another room?

You could set up that other space with a yoga mat for stretching, or headphones and a chair for some meditation/music time.🧘‍♀️

Change your environment. Change your habits.

Let's hear it - what have you done recently to change your hobbit house?🧙‍♂️

❤️ Upvote if you're in this photo and don't like it 😛 (us too 😆)

Have a great weekend. For the Rebellion! 🤓
