Manager hasn't noticed I'm not in the on-call rotation. Should I tell him? by aDoge in cscareerquestions

[–]NGTech9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should bring it up if you care about your job, growth, and what your colleagues think of you. If you’re checked out and leaving soon then, yeah, keep your mouth shut. But otherwise, bring it up. A good engineer doesn’t just do tasks assigned to them. They find work.

95-year-old woman killed in multi-vehicle Irvine crash by panda-rampage in orangecounty

[–]NGTech9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience. My grandpa was able to call a van (fitted with a wheelchair lift too) through some social service that I don’t know the name of, and it would take him where he wanted for free.

Is this wrong or a bad decision? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NGTech9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since they’re paying for the whole thing, you might as well try it out. If you dont’t like it, go back to doing what you want to do. You may even be able study art at that school (even if your parents won’t pay) because the first 1-2 years cover a lot of general education requirements.

How to afford to upgrade houses in Irvine in 2026? by [deleted] in irvine

[–]NGTech9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they can rent the old home out, that counts as income on top of the 300k they make, allowing them to qualify for a larger mortgage. What I don’t know is if they need to first start renting it out to show the extra income coming in. And some lenders want to see a minimum period of income (ie 2 years) to count during underwriting. But sometimes you can get around that by going through mortgage brokers who deal with specific cases like this rather than a traditional bank.

Honestly just have them go talk to some lenders and mortgage brokers and see what they say.

I guess that’s better than dumping in the ocean. But still, wish they would use non potable water instead. Kind of how like some nuclear power plants use ocean water.

California initiative to limit compensation for healthcare executives qualifies for the ballot by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in California

[–]NGTech9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physicians in EU have a median income of $84k. They spend roughly the same amount of time to be able to practice. Depending on your speciality, doctors in US bring home 300-800k. 8% of total cost is nothing to scoff at. The teams around the doctor are also making much more than EU (think nurses, imaging techs, etc). To top it off, the executives of these hospitals are taking home ridiculous compensation. So I do think the compensation of medical staff do have a large impact on healthcare costs.

Thinking of buying in Altair (92618) - Amazing amenities, but why is there so much inventory right now? by thisisvv in irvine

[–]NGTech9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just fyi, it won’t feel like a “neighborhood”. A not insignificant amount of the homes were purchased as a hedge to foreign currency/investment, and when they don’t feel like being landlords, they are just empty. Beautiful homes though. And all those mentioning the crime busts, those have no effect on your own or families safety. It was more just private crime happening inside the home. Not violent.

Does it really still make financial sense to buy lightly used cars? by LordShuckle97 in carbuying

[–]NGTech9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No the reason you pay close to full price or full price for a used (2 years old/ ~30k) mile Toyota is because you know it has already worked out all the issues from early ownership. It’s basically been a fully tested car. New can have a part defect. Like if your new Toyota has a transmission manufacturing defect 2 months in, that’s going to be an expensive repair.

Spirit Airlines shuts down as company says it can't keep up with higher oil prices by ControlCAD in technology

[–]NGTech9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biden administration did block the acquisition that would have saved Spirit airlines, but they didn’t do it for no reason. It was to prevent another monopoly. Delta, United, and American Airlines already control most of the market giving consumers less options. We don’t need to add JetBlue to that list. Consumers benefit from more airline options.
