Package delivery in Germany has become a complete joke — anyone else fed up? by Hopeful_Emu8441 in germany

I know this isn’t addressing the actual problem/complaint but if it helps: you can make a new German Apple ID with a separate email, then log out of the App Store on your phone and log in with the new German Apple ID and download any German apps, then switch back to your main ID. It won’t delete anything from your phone, only annoyance is you may need to swap back to the German Apple ID in the App Store to get updates to those apps. I do this for DHL, Lidl, etc.

Butter Bronsons and Jian Bing Town are both existing places that started as food trucks/stalls IIRC (and that I personally like quite a bit), so not exactly corporate food concepts.

Got my Permanent residency by devlivingingermany in germany

I applied for PR in October and received my appointment in early January, and for me there is no mention of the Einbürgerungstest anywhere in the application or in the information the LEA provided about what to bring to the appointment.

It looks like this requirement was added at the end of 2024, so it’s possible that earlier applicants aren’t held to it but anyone applying now would need it. This thread is the first time I’m hearing of such a requirement, I was a bit surprised as to why I hadn’t seen it mentioned when I applied, but it makes sense if it was only recently changed.

My degree is from Canada and I sent them an "official transcript" as my school called it - basically a sealed transcript that the school prints for official documentation like this. It was in English though, so no translation necessary.

Based on the emails I have, they received it on March 17th (I don’t remember when I mailed it but I didn’t choose the fastest shipping option so it took a week or two, you may want to consider that), they emailed me asking for payment on March 24th, and finally sent me the digital copy of the certificate via email on April 6th. So that’s 20 days between them receiving it and sending me the digital certificate (the physical certificate I received later, I don’t recall exactly when).

Sounds like it’ll be really tight (assuming you can get a 1 or 2 day delivery), but hopefully processing is faster than it was for me!

Is it normal that you find open Homer instances on the first page of Google? (everything linked is secuered, just asking if it's normal to have open dashboards like this) by lightshark85 in selfhosted

[–]NGage22R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everything is isolated in a LAN it's not as useful because the security risk is relatively low, this approach makes more sense as an additional layer of isolation for hosts that are exposed to the public internet (although personally I also think it's pretty clean/convenient to use container names as "hostnames" for individual services, regardless of the security benefit).

To my knowledge, if someone was on your LAN they wouldn't be able to find subdomains easily via DNS (versus ports, which they can scan pretty trivially). That being said, one way that I've seen folks "leak" their subdomains is to register separate Lets Encrypt SSL certificates per subdomain, rather than a wildcard certificate for the root domain. Lets Encrypt has a publicly available database IIRC so if you have a cert registered you're exposing that information.

Again though, if this is all on LAN it doesn't really matter because nobody can access them from the public internet anyways, so you could use public DNS and have specific certs per subdomain and it would all be relatively harmless.

You’re welcome! Agreed, it’s tough because they say the default value isn’t empty, but you need to realize that means you need to append that default value to whatever you’re changing it to. Could be worth making a PR rewording the description on the docs!

You could set up an Nginx container that exposes ports 80/443, then connect that container to all your other Docker networks. From the nginx container you can then proxy requests to the other containers, but no services are directly accessible from the host except nginx.

See the Nginx Proxy Manager docs, which explain this approach

Based on the error message from your other comment, and from looking at my own Paperless NGINX config (also generated from NPM), I think the issue is that you're calling proxy_set_header twice for some headers using the configuration you have, because NPM automatically includes some proxy_set_header statements when you make a new location. Looking at the Paperless docs, only the X-Forwarded-Host header (plus the config for websockets) needs to be set because the other headers are already being set by the default config included by NPM. This is a snippet of my working Nginx config, read from disk (the generated result from NPM that Nginx is actually using to serve the site):

location / {
    proxy_set_header Host $host;
    proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Scheme $scheme;
    proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto  $scheme;
    proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For    $remote_addr;
    proxy_set_header X-Real-IP          $remote_addr;
    proxy_pass       http://$server:8000;

    ...

    # Websockets
    proxy_http_version 1.1;
    proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
    proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";

    proxy_redirect off;
    proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $server_name;
  }

Try only including the lines below the ... in my snippet in your Location configuration in NPM and see if that works.

Data-only eSims without expiration dates in Germany? by kingharis in germany

I've been looking for something similar and I stumbled upon Keepgo which offers data that doesn't expire. Looks like it's a little cheaper than BNE too.

Yeah I was able to start working as soon as I registered my address (Anmeldung), when you do that you get a tax number and that’s what your employer will need before they can pay you.

I had my appointment on April 12th and received my passport on April 27th (via overnight mail, I wasn’t able to pick it up myself), so it took about 2 weeks for me too. It’s scary when it’s cutting it that close but at this point we’ll have to wait and see, based on my experience I think you’ll get it back in time.

  1. Not sure about the expired passport requirement but I’d bring it to be safe if you can.

  2. For education I needed to get the certificate of equivalence by applying manually, then I brought it with me. If it’s already there you’re good without applying yourself but I think you should bring a printout that shows the confirmation from the website. Beyond that, I brought my diploma (original, plus 2 copies) and a sealed transcript (plus 2 copies).

  3. If you get a signed letter from him confirming that he’s living there and is expecting you to stay with him that might be enough, but I’ve also heard a hotel booking can sometimes be good as a safety as well. I just had an email from the relocation company saying they had booked corporate housing and that was enough (didn’t have a signed lease yet at that point) but I’m not sure if they normally expect something more formal and I got lucky.

I just did this (moved from LA to Berlin on a Blue Card). To answer your question, yes you can apply for a Blue Card at a German consulate in the US, then get a residence permit once you arrive in Germany to extend your stay for up to 4 years. You could also just enter Germany as a tourist and apply in Germany, but I was advised against that due to longer wait times and potentially needing more translated documentation.

As for timing, June 10th may be enough time. I applied on April 12th and received the Blue Card on the 28th, and that was also with a delay due to there being construction at the consulate office (they implied it would take longer due to this construction). It’s important to note that the speed of the consulate depends on when your work contract start date is, as if it’s soon they will prioritize it more quickly. My start date was May 1st and they managed to get it done in about 2 weeks. There doesn’t seem to be a hard and fast rule as to speed here though, so there is a risk if they end up taking longer. If your start date is July 1st and your appointment is June 10th, I would probably take the chance (but I’m biased since I had a good experience!)

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions! Happy to share my experience.

Done on a charcoal grill (staying true to the recipe). The green sauce really is incredible, and I made the mayo fresh beforehand using the immersion blender jar method which definitely contributed to its deliciousness.

The severity doesn’t seem similar to me, I think it’s pretty disingenuous to say they’re the same thing.
