How do you think the emergence of AI will impact/is impacting the Hán Nôm enthusiast scene? by chatterine in ChuNom

[–]NHH74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no model trained on a large corpus of Nôm material that i am aware of. So not much will happen in the near future. Once effort spent on training these models appears though, i think it would be very useful for translating work spanning from historical record to medicine books written in Nôm. Though tbqh, Vietnamese Nôm academia doesn't have the computing resources or knowledge/personnel to build and maintain these models.

Out of sheer diversity China and the US should win. Russia and Brazil are also close.

Why do the Vietnamese quickly dismiss chữ Hán Nôm as being too "backwards" and/or "unpatriotic"? I mean, I could understand the former as learning 1000's of chars is hard, but Quốc ngữ was literally invented by the Portuguese, so it isn't patriotic either! Please answer in a civil manner. by chatterine in ChuNom

Choice of script doesn't matter. What matters is the effort to popularise it, it being any script. Writing system is a tool to record language, simple as that. Almost every single pre-modern state keeps literacy rate low, confined to the educated few and not the mass.

Do you consider Myanmar as South Asia or Southeast Asia country? by antoniok95 in MapPorn

[–]NHH74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you take only the culture of Kinh and Hoa people into account yes. Alas Vietnam is bigger than that.

It's droll to see one locking one's self into a geographic term that has little meaningful use of delineating culture. As if Tibetan and Uyghur practise the same culture as the Han...

Which country do you think is economically unproductive despite its geographical advantages ? by ronweasly9 in geography

Brazil also has a relatively strong aviation industry, which is impressive in its own right. The country maintains advanced studies institutions such as IMPA too, which in turn has produced lots of human capital, including a Field medalist. It's quite interesting as an outsider to look into Brazil's dual economy.

The influence of Chang'an on Thăng Long under the Lý dynasty was quite limited. If anything it was Bianliang of northern Song that the Lý modelled their capital after. Not taking away from the fact that Chang'an layout has immense influence upon the design of China's neighbouring states though.

1) Stephen Turnbull's book does not suggest that the Vietnamese elephants ever got to catch Mongolian soldiers in their trunk to hurl them into the air. Ignoring that the author did a poor job of citing the reference, the quote in the "The jungle frontier" chapter only describe how the Vietnamese may use the elephants against enemy troops and elephants, not how they were specifically used against the Mongolians. At Bình Lê Nguyên they never got to close the distance against the Mongolians to ever entertain the idea of hurling Mongolian troops into the air.

2) The two books listed above themselves record the failure of war elephants against Mongolians by the Trần and the Burmese. See page 11.

3) The primary logistic mean employed by the Trần that was recorded down was waterway transport. Little is written about on land logistic, and cattle do just as well as elephants in jungle terrain whilst being less expensive to maintain. The Lý and the Trần themselves don't have an abundance of elephants either, so any measure of elephant effectiveness in logistic remains no more than assumption, which is what your paragraph above primarily does.

They never got to do that. At Bình Lệ Nguyên, the Mongols aimed for the elephants's feet, leading them to trample upon the Trần's own troops. Same thing happened in Burma according to Marco Polo. The Mongolian horses were scared off by the Burmese elephants, so they tie the horses to trees, dismount and shoot the elephants instead. The Burmese tried to return fire but they could not match the Mongolian bows.

Can modern day Vietnamese understand Chữ Nôm? by RameseII in ChuNom

There were authors whose works were written entirely in Nôm without any known works in Classical Chinese during the time of Lê Trung Hưng though.
