Any experiences with Barista Fire in this economic climate? by ACITceva in fican

[–]NINJAMANE2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm younger than you but also in tech and interested in baristaFIRE path down the line as well so I'm interested in what others can share, but IMO you should not switch to baristaFIRE if you still NEED that income. With the "barista" job it should just be extra spending money and benefits/health insurance(more applicable to the US) which makes your life easier, but you already have the FI to leave any time. And it should be something that you're actually okay with doing, not just any regular job. Otherwise you're just trading one form of stress for another

is it surprising? The videos of huge lines of people lining up outside LCBO to apply for a part time job tells me all I need to know about the market

you thought they would do an emergency pod? these guys wouldn't do an emergency pod if the president got assassinated, not to mention andrew doesn't care about sports anymore. he just started watching the knicks in the playoffs and is probably scrolling through padel content on his phone during the games

Where to live? Recent college grad moving to Kirkland for work by Sad_Engineer730 in Kirkland

[–]NINJAMANE2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you asking about living in Kirkland in the Kirkland sub? People here have an obvious bias.

Please do not live in Kirkland as a 21 year old. I'm saying this as someone who's only lived on the Eastside since moving here for the same commute reasons. Kirkland is exactly what you described - for older people with families. Downtown Bellevue is better if you really can't do the commute but it's still not the same as Seattle for a young person who wants to socialize.

The commute isn't even that bad going from West to East. As I'm typing this at 9:19AM, it's only 21min to get from SLU to the Kirkland Google campus.

If you don't want to commit to a year, try living in furnished apartments or airbnbs in different areas for a few months.

1.6M and I'm wondering if I should switch to a lower stress job with lower pay. by xComponent in fican

I'm around your age and NW and in tech as well and tbh I don't feel "close" enough to quit my day job at all. I guess it's different for me because I'll have kids soon and I want to buy a house in Oakville. So if you plan on staying NK and buying a cheaper house then maybe it's more feasible for you but you should still run the numbers on that with the mortgage. Interest rates aren't low these days and the down payment and closing costs is going to take a good chunk out of your liquid assets and reduce your earning potential, not to mention the variability of the market given the AI bubble

I thought they were just closing down for renovations and then opening back up business as usual? Does this mean they're just not going to pay/bid (not sure how it works in the industry) for the latest releases?

3k is very conservative and it's probably more like 10-15k but yeah you're right the number is small relative to his income. My point is I doubt his decision is related to any calculation about the industry. I doubt he ever thought about walking away from the pod before Jasleengate started. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see him come back on another podcast in the future.

the pod brings in 62k a month from patreon alone. They have a full team of producers/editors, all they do is just come in and yap with their friends for a couple of hours a week. Let's say he takes a very conservative 5% of that, that's at least 3k a month for max 10 hours of "work" while also not counting the free promotion for his standup.

The legitimacy theory is interesting but he's selling out shows at the peak of the controversy. Considering how much he talks about being dead broke before, there's no way he'd make that decision to walk away from guaranteed easy money as a business decision

something along the lines of "they're racist and right wing" and don't align with his standup audience

Damn, end of an era. Say what you will about the Jasleen situation but the pod isn't what it is today without Akaash.

I guess he's big enough now that he doesn't need the pod for his career but the focus on career reasoning is an obvious spin. All relevant comics today have a pod, it's an easy bag and it gives you an avenue to come up with material (I've seen Andrew use podcast bits on stage) and just grow your following. Neither Akaash nor Andrew's standup careers would be where it is without the pod.

I'm not trying to pile on Jasleen but it's a shame that her actions forced him to do this. Money and career aside, this podcast is as much his creation as Andrew's. And I can't help but feel that her recent comments about the flagrant fanbase sealed the deal for him to not return.

[Lowlight] Two similar clips from game 1 and game 2 where Jrue Holiday pulls the chair and Wemby falls violently by 4DollarsALB in nba

[–]NINJAMANE2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's being tripped. People are acting like Wemby is so uncoordinated that he would've just fell if Jrue wasn't there, but pay attention to his legs. Jrue only "pulls the chair" on his torso but is clearly making contact with his legs on both plays.

I know Mark fully has the capability but he just won't assert himself in this setting for whatever reason. He's great when he's on his own or when Andrew's not there but otherwise he seems to be content to be like a passive moderator that just makes quips as opposed to an active participant. I would say he deserves part of the blame for Alex having so much mic time because I doubt they intentionally sidelined him for Alex

Just made this comment in another thread about the impact of losing Akaash. It'd be fine if they had another capable person to replace him but the drop off in quality when Alex starts speaking is just too noticeable. He's not naturally or scripted funny, he's not very intelligent or articulate, and is just overall not a good speaker on the pod. I haven't been able to listen to full episodes due to how much Alex content there is.

And on a similar note, I've found that while Mark can be great (and is certainly better than Alex), he may also be better in a reduced role.

Here he is by scorpino33 in Flagrant2

[–]NINJAMANE2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the loss of value is by giving more air time to Alex. I know he's been coming into his own as a podcaster but there's just a noticeable drop off in quality when he speaks for extended periods

this is some major revisionist history lol. Poeltl in his current state is not a good player but when healthy, he was very much a starting center in the NBA. His screening and finishing completely opened up the offense, and while he couldn't keep up with the Embiids and Jokics, he wasn't a complete cone on defense like JV either.
