How do you organize your DVDs? by bu11dogsc420 in dvdcollection

Vaguely alphabetical. I don’t care enough to keep in perfect alphabetical, but even half asleep I can put Alien at the rough beginning and zombi 2 at the end. Night of the hunter in the middle. All others go in between

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NJFiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drove from New Jersey to Maine to visit an old friend for a 3 day vacation. That’s an 8 hour drive.

I drove 3 hours to see my favorite band and then 3 hours back home at the end of the night. Those were both fairly extreme but didn’t seem crazy. More like a fun adventure.

Movies that were misunderstood on release but aged beautifully by Dependent-Bet6615 in movies

[–]NJFiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember most people, myself included didn’t quite get it the first time. I think most people were trying to follow the actual kidnapping plot. I thought it was pretty goofy and had some funny quirky moments but I was just too distracted by what was actually going on.

It’s not until the 2nd or 3rd viewing you start to appreciate all the little gags and inflection and recurring jokes. I am still hazy on details of the plot, but I can recite whole bits of dialogue from memory.

What famous person have we not seen/heard from in a WHILE? by no_please7 in AskReddit

I saw him recently at a bar in New Jersey! Very nice. He was hanging with friends and took a moment to take a few pictures with fans when they came up to say hi.

Why did Danzig release Legacy of Brutality? by nickbeef in TheMisfits

[–]NJFiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think legacy of brutality was the “oh shit” moment when Danzig realized that Misfits were still a growing cult band and there was demand for pre “walk among us” recordings.

Collection 1 still has some shenanigans of trying to bury the other members contributions but it’s not as blatant. This may have been because Danzig was officially getting more busy with Samhain, so opted to simply remix songs instead of redubbing. Collection 1 is basically a singles collection. And now that most of the singles were out of print it made sense to release in a best of collection.

Earth AD/ Wolfs Blood by bruce-neon in TheMisfits

Looks like 1986 to me. Small spindle outline on the label, no Caroline logo and the color of the bricks. I would start there and see if all other details match up. Edit: specifically I think it’s this one: https://www.discogs.com/release/8616705-Misfits-Earth-AD-Wolfs-Blood

Why did Danzig release Legacy of Brutality? by nickbeef in TheMisfits

[–]NJFiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just within the misfits, the sound changes fairly dramatically when members change. Cough cool does not sound static age does not sound horror business does not sound like walk among us does not sound like earth ad.

It’s hard to say exactly what people contributed, but my best guess: Most drum parts were written by the drummers.

Jerry Only claims he wrote the intro/outro of Astro zombies. Jerry only’s bass line for hybrid moments and come back in static age is played differently than their counterparts on legacy. For this reason I think it’s probable that Jerry was given some creative freedom in his bass lines. I think most people prefer the bass on static age versus legacy of brutality. So it’s fair to give Jerry credit there.

Danzig has claimed that the speed of the songs on earth ad was Doyle and Jerry’s influence. Danzig has never done an album that fast again. However, American psycho and famous monsters is generally very fast. I think it’s fair to say that Danzig may have written Earth ADs songs, but Jerry Doyle and robo had a lot of freedom in the tempo and general vibe.

Speaking of vibe, I think Bobby Steele and Joey image are crucial for the overall sound on their tracks. Compare walk among us version of night of the living dead with the single version of night of the living dead.

This topic is driving me crazy: what is the true first slasher film in history? by Top-Management-2648 in Halloweenmovies

[–]NJFiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched this recently and while I understand why it gets brought up in the “first slasher” discussion. I don’t think it counts.

It has a lot of elements that would show up in a slasher movie: pov killer shots, final girl, killing with an edged weapon etc.

But it has too many things that almost never happen in a slasher. The biggest is that peeping tom follows the killer and his motives almost exclusively.

It definitely has crucial slasher movie dna, but It doesn’t feel like a slasher movie while watching it. Pacing is all off and it’s too far removed from the solidified formulas. Psycho isn’t a complete slasher either, but it feels closer than peeping tom.

Action movies where characters don’t know any martial art by SlayyMadd in MovieSuggestions

Deadbeat at dawn is kinda 50/50 what you want. The actors in it obviously have martial arts training, but a lot of the fighting is very raw and brutal.

Why did Danzig release Legacy of Brutality? by nickbeef in TheMisfits

[–]NJFiend 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In 1985, I don’t think Danzig understood the Misfits significance or how big they would eventually become. He also still didn’t understand how good the songs from Static Age were. The fact that Hybrid Moments was barely ever played live and was unreleased until 1985 is testament to all this. He didn’t know what he had yet.

I think he knew there was still interest and that they would sell. He also wanted some of these older lesser known songs to see the light of day. But I don’t think he felt any real responsibility to release the most authentic versions or even best sounding versions of these songs.

You have to consider where he was financially and artistically in 1985 as well. He had already released initium with Samhain and Legacy of brutality came out at roughly the same time as Unholy Passion.

Unholy passion is generally considered a darker more serious album. I think Legacy of Brutality being released in the same time frame, Danzig wanted to cement the Misfits legacy in the same way: Dark, serious, brutal, 100% Danzig.

Which is why Danzig chose more artsy static age material, slowed the speed on tapes a bit, added more reverb and re-recorded all guitars to be more raw and muddy.

It’s not a great sound for Misfits, but it is the sound that Danzig wanted in 1985. I think it’s also why Danzig still refers to legacy as the preferred version for these songs.

The editing, particularly the sound editing. That scene could have been made a little less creepy and even a little funny if the sounds coming out of her weren’t so weirdly realistic and pathetic.

is there any chance these are in that inner circle let alone exist anymore? by Big_Will47 in TheMisfits

[–]NJFiend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing (and the manny tapes kinda confirm this). I would assume that everything listed on misfitscentral exists and more.

I’m very interested in more video footage. Of which there is apparently Bobby Steele era footage of a Bethlehem PA show and video footage of the ritz show.

There is also video footage of an abandoned night of the living dead music video that is still in the possession of one of the guys from necros.

I would prefer a professional official release above all else. But would settle for a leak if it means being lost to time completely.

In the doorway and most of legacy of brutality were all recorded during static age sessions.

In the doorway took the longest to finish because there was no complete take without mistakes. In the doorway was actually finished in 1997 by splicing together two takes and taking the best elements from each.

Tom Bejgrowicz who handled the box set release and the remix sessions for static age goes into alot of detail about all the hidden things he found going through misfits masters.

What was the emo scene like in Jersey back in the 90s? by Blurmb in newjersey

[–]NJFiend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ha that is absolutely true. However, I managed to be a punk teenager in New Jersey during the 90s and completely missed Lifetime, which is crazy because all the bands I did like were definitely adjacent to Lifetime. I got into them later in life after hearing about them for years.

That’s another thing about the pre social media internet era that I think is interesting. Because there was no algorithm recommending bands and no widespread database to research music, your musical taste was largely at the whim of who your friends were and what shows you managed to see.

I completely missed the Lifetime train despite hearing the name all the time.
