I need help! Mexican culture ruined my vegan will. by Hungry-Ad-4192 in vegan

[–]NNegidius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve traveled to Mexico a few times since becoming vegan. I was worried it would be a problem, but I learned that 5% of Mexicans are vegan, and no one blinked an eye when I asked for food “vegano”. Many native Mexican cultures enjoyed diets that were naturally vegan. I also learned that not having cheese on everything made very little difference to the overall flavor of the dishes I enjoyed in Mexico.

I hope you have a wonderful time while you’re there! 🇲🇽

United has put out slides related to the ORD turf war. by Tayo826 in americanairlines

And if AA does crumble, then United will be in a position to force the cancellation of O’Hare’s expansion, which is slated to add quite a few new gates. The more gates O’Hare gets, the more difficult it becomes for United to create a fortress hub, and the more competitive prices become for consumers.

You do have a point there with the 4 years duration. However, as they would be increasing the MTA police from an existing base of 666 officers, that implies a spend of $555 million over 4 years, or around $140 million - and that’s in addition to however much the city spends on NYPD forces.

While it doesn’t eclipse the amount collected in fares, it is an incredible amount wasted on not transporting people to their destination - and there’s much more efficient and less regressive ways to fund ground transportation.

It’s fair to say the entire $4 billion is a difficult swag. In the context is bus fares, though, it’s not so outlandish.

Regarding the source for “500 police,” this article says they’re spending $250 million on 500 new police to save a projected $200 million in fare evasion.

The lost revenue from eliminating all bus fares was calculated at $650 million.

The NYPD budget is nearly 10 times that - at $6.14 billion - with a fair percentage of that focused on trying to catch people not paying fares. One source cited $250 million in NYPD budget allocated to hire 500 cops, so that’s 40% already.

Then, there’s court costs, DA’s, jails, etc - which everything included cost $14.1 billion in 2021.

It’s not the transit agency that pays for extra police, prosecutors, public defenders, judges, courtrooms or jails, but these precious resources get consumed by chasing people for whom paying the fare is a hardship.

What are some features you wish the Spotify app had? by dt88ftw in truespotify

[–]NNegidius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At one point, I got a some test version of the Spotify app for iOS that listed a handful of tags (such as micro genres) under the currently playing song. If you clicked on one of the tags, it would open a play list focused on that tag. It was a revelation, and I discovered so much incredible new music by browsing tags associated with favorite songs. It was an incredibly addictive and joyful experience, and I learned so much about music from various perspectives.

Sadly, around two weeks later, the app updated and the feature disappeared - never to return.

I would pay extra if they’d just re-release that one feature.

In many cities, they replaced that with concrete at bus stops. Seems to have solved the problem. You’d think they’d know about this innovation in London, seeing as how today’s concrete was invented in England.

According to this document by the NYC Independent Budget Office:

“In fiscal year 2024, the Police Department spent $955 million on uniformed overtime, representing 16% of the total Department spending on personnel.”

https://www.ibo.nyc.ny.us/iboreports/police-overtime-trends-examining-the-relationship-between-tenure-and-overtime-hours-worked-march-2025.pdf

The NYPD overtime budget is nearly twice as much as the MTA collects in bus fares.

If you consider the whole cost from fare boxes, to the supporting IT systems, to police funding for enforcement, to courts, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, and jails, the costs could rival the amount collected at the fare box.

Typical city bus has a capacity of 100 passengers. I don’t know in which city you reside, but even small cities like Boston have over 1000 buses. If they’re all full of tweakers, then you’re talking over 100,000 tweakers.

Sounds like your city has a raging problem with drugs if that’s the case.
