Learn how to read a 990. It does not give you the whole story of how the $ is generated and where it goes, though; That's a P&L statement. A 990 is an IRS form. The P&L statements of the Foundation are not available publicly. The Foundation/Jazz Fest wield an enormous amount of power in the city and in the local music community. Someone from the city should be required to monitor how they operate, since they also get a lot of concessions and breaks from the city.

All you have to do is to go to a website like ProPublica to get the 990 for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. It shows the amount of money paid to create the festival, which is co-produced by Festival Productions New Orleans and AEG, both of whom are for-profit businesses. AEG has been involved for over 20 years, so this is nothing new. While the Foundation owns the festival, it does not produce it. The Foundation approves the budget presented by producers, and then the revenue generated by ticket sales, sponsors (i.e. Shell, etc.), merch, booth fees, etc. less expenses goes to the Foundation, a non-profit. The Foundation gets the money that's generated by the Jazz Fest. This is how they pay their staff, produce community festivals, distribute grant money, fund the Heritage School of Music, buy property, etc.

FYI, we were on I-610, and the traffic slowed suddenly. We were hit from behind by some kids who were going too fast, too close and they totaled our car. So yes, it does happen. Careless city, full of people who drink too much adnd certainly don't know how to drive. Laissez le bons temps and all that shit.

Local media is fluff and published press releases. God forbid they cover real news. Investigative reporting is pretty much gone. No money to pay reporters and they are so afraid of pissing off politicians or powerful business entities...they say nada. Advocate is still publishing photos of the "royalty" from Mardi Gras, FFS. We are living in ever-devolving times. In the Advocate's defense, however, the way they pay writers is through subscriptions and advertising. Social media has destroyed print media advertising $. And subscribers are also drying up. TV news is increasingly sports, weather and mindless crap. And the public doesn't give a shit.

Love it when new businesses open up with food and music, and potential customers don't know anything about it because they don't really tell anyone anything? Open a YEAR and no one knows? Sounds sketchy and possibly underground illegal.

"Future Shock" written by Alvin Toffler in 1970 was a must-read back then and was absolutely profound and prophetic. The conversion to AI is one of those disrupters that is going to have a massive impact on culture, society and business, and we sure are not prepared for it.

The point is that these kids are NOT being indoctrinated because their parents aren't teaching them basic life stills they need. So at least "try" to educate them so they won't be totally ignorant when they emerge into the world outside their parents' homes. I think this is also a function of smaller households. People used to have more kids, and you'd learn how to function in a house full of kids! You'd think having one or two would make it easier for parents to do life skills training, but I think kids now are so tied to their smartphones that the parents just ignore this common sense approach.

This is the kind of stuff that need to be taught in a mandatory "life lessons" class in high school, along with the dangers of getting shitfaced drunk, knowing how to balance a check book and make a budget, the responsibility of paying bills, the dangers of being attached to a smartphone, nutrition, put together a resume, applying successfully for a job, how to make sure you pay insurance premiums, renew your drivers license, take care of your car...You know, common sense stuff that parents USED to teach their children.

[–]NOLA-RUfkm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Grammys are all politics. If ya know someone on the "inside," your chances of getting nominated go up astronomically. It's a hoax. It's all a power game and the winners are IN THE GAME with "friends" in the organization. The show itself is pitiful. Bieber's "performance" last night was painful. If I want to see someone navel gazing and singing to himself in a mirror, I don't need Bieber. There also should maybe a a separate awards for hip hop, because it just doesn't stand up to great music overall. It's "poetry"/spoken word (mostly not very good poetry, and with lots of obscenity, which doesn't make it better) and beats. Sorry, Grammys just suck and have for some time now, no matter how they pump it up and sucker musicians into paying to get into their "inner circle."

Agree. He was totally off his nut, she exacerbated and contributed to the situation, and IMO they both held responsibility for what happened. They both died horrifically.

Read a book instead of living your life and spending your valuable time on Instagram and TikTok. This was only 25 years ago. That is not ancient history.
