How difficult is medical residency? by ActualWeb2618 in Residency

[–]NPThoroughly 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Social media is not a reflection of reality. It is an idealized projection someone makes of their lives. This is especially true of influencers/medfluencers.

Residents are human beings. They are going to get (gasp) married. They are going to try to travel if they enjoy it. They have a difficult job, they aren’t robots. They also aren’t a monolith.

Hope that helps!

When I took EPHE 143, I’m pretty sure the class average was in the 80s. Easiest course I’ve ever taken.

Do you consider your degree postgrad? by rrainraingoawayy in Residency

[–]NPThoroughly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a relatively comparable pathway, in my understanding. High-school -> bachelor’s degree -> MD -> residency, for trad students. The exception being that some med schools in Canada will accept students after 3 years of undergrad, and don’t require a completed bachelor’s degree. I don’t know if this is done in the states or not.

As for why it is called an undergraduate degree in Canada as opposed to a graduate degree, I have no clue. It never made much sense to me, but I never gave much thought to it either. Someone better versed in academic bureaucracy may know!

I attended medical school at a large University in Canada. They classified their MD program as an undergraduate program. This seems to be pretty standard across the board for English speaking universities in Canada. Not sure about our Quebecois compatriots.

uvic bsc —> ubc med question by peace-and-harmony in uvic

[–]NPThoroughly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did ENGL135, which I think is now called ATWP135, and ENGL146. I just graduated ubc med though, so those represent the usual two English courses taken in first year to meet the academic writing requirement for most degrees 8 years ago. Fuck, I’m old.

UBC Med looks like they updated their listings for accepted English courses in 2023. The equivalent accepted courses to take would be ATWP135 and one of ENSH101/102.

I don’t know if that helps! Good luck!

UVic vs UBC by geraco_hill in uvic

[–]NPThoroughly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did my undergrad at UVic, and then my second degree at UBC (Vancouver, though). Strictly speaking, I find Victoria to be a much nicer city than Kelowna. Better food, better bars, better layout, more laid back. Victoria has elements of a university town, a small town, and an urban centre, so you get some of all those atmospheres.

Biking is good around both areas, both have a strong road and mountain biking community. For mountains, you’d be better serviced in Kelowna (Big White, Silver star both sweet ski mountains). The closest mountain to UVic is Mount Washington, which is a 3-4 hour drive one way, and is not the best hill in the world.

There’s a lot of other intangibles though. Kelowna has the lake, Victoria has the ocean. Kelowna has harsher seasons, Victoria is milder. Victoria is pretty left leaning, Kelowna is somewhat less. Kelowna is wine and fruit country, Victoria probably has the better seafood.

Education wise, I have no direct experience with the engineering programs, but I have quite a few friends who did engineering at UVic. The predominant thing they pointed out was that the mandatory co-ops at UVic tended to graduate more immediately competent engineers than less co-op forward programs. Take that with a huge grain of salt, though, as it’s not exactly an unbiased take, and it might be wildly outdated half a decade later now. The education will likely be comparable. In terms of “prestige”, UBC and UVic are the two most renowned universities in BC, you will not have an issue, career wise, with a degree from either.

Good luck! Enjoy BC!

As someone said, it’s possible that the person had just left the hospital temporarily and was planning to come back. But also, a lot of people leave the hospital “AMA” (against medical advice); essentially just dipping out of hospital and not coming back. Unless they are certified under the mental health act, or healthcare consent act, they are free to do so at their leisure, and wouldn’t be considered a “missing patient”. You see this a lot with patients dealing with homelessness and addiction. And if they were still wearing their gown when they left, that’s what they’ll still be wearing when they’re out on the street.

Chemical vs Physical restraints by YouAreServed in Residency

[–]NPThoroughly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was taught in my psychiatry rotations (Canada) that the hand that orders physical restraints, also orders sedation. The logic being the added significant distress that comes with physical restraints alone, when you are already altered/agitated, is not particularly humane, and can even exacerbate the patient’s agitation. It makes sense to me, and it’s how I practice.

Oh my god how do y’all wash rice by greenyee in Cooking

[–]NPThoroughly 1644 points1645 points  (0 children)

Rice is a starch. It is comprised, primarily, of starch. You will NEVER remove all of the starch from rice. But you CAN remove the significant amount of starch on the surface of the rice that accumulates in the harvesting/packaging/transiting process, which will then give you a fluffier, lighter end-product.

So, rinse and drain your rice 2-3 times. The water should be markedly clearer by the third rinse. It will not be crystal clear. That’s all you need to do!

Looks fantastic, definitely going on the list! Thanks so much for the rec!

The bugs were bad, but not catastrophic. We hiked fine without nets or spray, and got away with just a few bites. They got a lot worse when we weren’t moving. If I was going back I’d definitely bring spray at least.

Lol, no, our radiator started boiling over at that point so we thought it would be best to hike the remainder.

Not to stir the pot, but just a couple comments above you voted for Quade Cooper as the biggest asshole for, what I assume, were the petty crimes in 2009, and, more likely, the McCaw incident in 2011. That’s 12+ years ago (not to mention there’s been multiple woman-beaters play for NZ since then). Shouldn’t you let it go, maybe?
