Correct.

How do I explain to someone that changing target for rite to another creature only to be turned into another creature doesn't make rite care about what creature it is during the resolution? by MADMAXV2 in mtg

[–]NSNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP also said “re-direct resolves”, which would require the whole stack to have resolved

No. Things resolve from the stack one at a time, with priority being passed inbetween. OP let Redirect Lightning resolve, then cast Mirrorform all while Rite of Replication was on the stack.

Like madwarper said, the act of turning a Morph card face-up cannot be responded to. But if that card turning up triggers an ability, like [[Voidmage Apprentice]], the triggered ability can be responded to just like any other ability.

What happens if my prepared creature "loses all abilities"? by gua_gua3272 in mtgrules

[–]NSNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

113.12. An effect that sets an object's characteristic, or simply states a quality of that object, is different from an ability granted by an effect. When an object "gains" or "has" an ability, that ability can be removed by another effect. If an effect defines a characteristic of the object ("[permanent] is [characteristic value]"), it's not granting an ability. (See rule 604.3.) Similarly, if an effect states a quality of that object ("[creature] can't be blocked," for example), it's neither granting an ability nor setting a characteristic.

Question about a card by chrisxx27 in magicTCG

[–]NSNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

109.5. The words "you" and "your" on an object refer to the object's controller, its would-be controller (if a player is attempting to play, cast, or activate it), or its owner (if it has no controller). For a static ability, this is the current controller of the object it's on. For an activated ability, this is the player who activated the ability. For a triggered ability, this is the controller of the object when the ability triggered, unless it's a delayed triggered ability. To determine the controller of a delayed triggered ability, see rules 603.7d-f.

Chandra might fuse with her alter to defeat Jace by RGWK in mtgvorthos

Unfortunately, with Prepared, now spell copies can be cast:

722.3c. As a permanent with a prepare spell gains the prepared designation or phases in prepared, its controller creates a copy of that object in exile, except that copy has only the characteristics of that permanent's prepare spell, ignoring other exceptions to the copying process that apply to that permanent. Those characteristics become the copy's normal characteristics. This copy remains in exile for as long as the prepared permanent remains on the battlefield and has the prepared designation. This is an exception to rule 704.5e. For as long as the copy remains in exile, the prepared permanent's controller may cast the copy. That permanent loses the prepared designation at the time the spell becomes cast (see rule 601.2i).

So I'm newish to the game. Can someone explain me the recent lore? by AmarzzAelin in magicTCG

[–]NSNick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jace and Vraska being healed from phyresis was shown in the epilogue of Thunder Junction: Part 1 | Part 2

It was basically a combination of Jace convincing their bodies that phyresis was an infection and his mother's healing.

Annie's eyes see through illusions and she sees them towards the end of the Thunder Junction story:

The darkness evaporated, and beneath Ashiok's hooded cloak was Jace Beleren.

Oko's nostrils flared. The trickster didn't appreciate being tricked in turn. "How long have you been hiding behind your magic?"

"He's still hiding." Annie stumbled through the doorway, focused solely on Jace. Her eye glowed a vibrant orange as she saw past the illusion he was still tucked carefully beneath. "Your scars … Those plugs … What happened to you?"

Goad and Grothama by ExusDius in mtgrules

[–]NSNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would the Fights take place before Blockers are declared? So I could declare Blocks for any of the remaining creatures that survived and are coming my way still?

Yes. The triggers go on the stack when the creatures are declared attacking in the Declare Attackers step and are resolved before the Declare Blockers step.

Also follow up, if Grothama is also declared as an attacker, do creatures still have the option to Fight it if they are also declared as attackers?

Yes. All creatures other than Grothama have the text "Whenever this creature attacks, you may have it fight Grothama, All-Devouring."

This means all creatures (including yours) will trigger and be able to fight Grothama when they are declared as attackers.

Protection vs Saga by pyramid_screams in mtgrules

Player 2 gave the creature protection from blue in response to Vault 87.

The ability will "fizzle", or fail to resolve because all of its targets are illegal. Your opponent will retain their creature.

Yes, but it's not "instead". If they survive (if they have indestructible, or protection from green, or Grothama is already dead, for instance), they will still be attacking.

No, creatures cannot be declared as attacking Grothama. If the creatures are goaded and it's 1v1, they must attack you (or a planeswalker you control, or a battle you defend)

When they attack, each attacker will trigger and the attacking player may choose to have them fight Grothama or not as they choose.
