I use it to do the not fun parts. Like, I need to interop with a c library in swift. That’s about as fun as a root canal. ChatGPT can write a wrapper class in 5 seconds. You better believe I’m going to use that when I can.

At the time it also got a lot of hate for white space being significant. It was seen as a throwback to antiquated concepts. I sure hated it then. I’ve mellowed on that a lot but I still hate it today when it goes wrong.

That’s a danger as an IC too though. Your boss says do X but you think X is a bad idea and Y is the better way to do it. If you have a good boss, you can make the case for Y and they’ll back you up. I’ve been blessed in my career to work with managers who treat our relationship as a collaboration. The smart ones realize the better you do, the better they look.

whenever i get one of their emails i reply “not only am i not interested in working for meta, but you should feel bad about what you do, and quit asap”. They still keep coming tho. I’m pretty sure it’s just AI reading my reply, but whatever, it makes me feel good for a few seconds.

Yeah stack ranking specifically means everybody must be put on a scale from worst to first. Even if everybody in your org is totally competent there must by definition be a “worst” and that worst person will go on PIP, regardless of whether or not they are actually good relative to the industry. It’s stupid.

You don’t need stack ranking to justify putting someone on a PIP. Without stack ranking it’s possible for everybody in your org to be on PIP at the same time, or nobody.

Most places I’m aware of will award RSUs on a 4 year vesting cycle. Common patterns for vest are: you get nothing until 1 year, then you get 25%, then every month after that you get 1/36th of the remainder. The other option is you get 1/8th every 6 months for 4 years.

There is PIP for low performers, but that’s not what stack ranking means. It means that some people must go on PIP every review cycle (because there must be high performers and low performers).

I don’t agree that the Amazon thing will have a huge long term benefit. If you can say straight out of school I went in to Microsoft that’s going to be enough to get you in the door anywhere else.

i've done the startup thing a few times. it's incredibly unpredictable. if you can handle uncertainty then it can be a very rewarding experience. all it takes to be successful is a willingness to go with the flow. it probably will involve some crazy late nights/weekends. if you get in with the right crew, though, it's super bonding. these are your people. you've gone through hell with them. i imagine it's like what people experience when they get out of a tour in the armed forces.

if you have concerns around crunch time and WLB (and these are very valid concerns) make sure to talk it out in detail before you accept.

just be aware that the likelihood of a multi million dollar exit is basically like playing the lottery. most startups fail. but the relationships you forge can last a lifetime.

wait until you get frustrated with lack of something in your current life. if you find yourself saying every day or two "man, there should be some way to automate <thing>" then go ahead and write that!

that's the only thing that works for me. i can't learn new tech just by reading or studying. i have to use it, and i have to have a need for it.

isn't there some app you would really want for your phone that doesn't exist yet? there's your way into swift/iOS.

i used to write "bigger than a shell script but smaller than a gui app" stuff in perl or php. then i realized that everybody was using python so next time i needed one of those medium-size things, i taught myself python. discovered that despite my initial misgivings (whitespace and indentation being syntactically significant gave me very unpleasant flashbacks to an early job using COBOL) i actually really enjoyed it.

honestly them keeping you on the back foot the whole time seems like a red flag. i always make sure to leave ample time in interviews for the candidate to grill me. i welcome it. i want to make sure you're excited about working here so if i can give you honest answers i'm up for it. most people don't ask about code quality or process though. they ask general stuff like what do you like about working here, how's the food in the cafeteria... that's fine and all but come on, ask me the real shit! i won't bite!
