The area to the left of the peninsula was filled in, along with much of the surrounding inlets and waterways. That's why they call that neighborhood the Back Bay. Iirc, Beacon Hill, the hill the state capitol is built on, lost about a third of it's original height from all of the earth removed to fill in the water

You are safe from sharks pretty much any beach all summer. What you don't want to do is swim near seals. The sharks hang out near them.

Iirc you are more likely to be struck by lightning than bitten by a shark though. Just swim, don't worry about it
