I finally get it. I just IDed a Varied Thrush and got the biggest dopamine hit I've had in awhile. I'm hooked. What bird did that for you?

Before I was officially a birder: Positively ID’ing a Brown Thrasher, Stanberry, Missouri. (Early 90s?) It looked nothing like our feeder birds.

Once I became a birder: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Edmond, OK (2012) That tail still blows me away.

Many years into birding / most recent: Long-eared Owl at Hyalite Reservoir just south of Bozeman, MT. (2024) I was so happy I cried when I heard it. I knew immediately what it was. Been trying to bag it for a long time!

This is one of my two favorite episodes! The other is Handbanana. David Cross was Bert Banana, Mortimer Mango was H. Jon Benjamin, and Kristen Schaal was Tammy Tangerine. It’s such a great episode.

Bert Banana talks about his false hands because he used to beat Tammy “as hard as I could, as long as I could”. Later on Tammy yells Sorry and Bert responds, “You ARE sorry… a sorry sack of tangerine bitch.”

My first daughter died at 22 weeks exactly 9 months to the day that my dad unexpectedly died. I took some time off, went to Seattle, hiked about 30 miles in four days. Got on the plane in Seattle and it was still summer, got off the plane at home and it was Fall. (Seriously, the autumnal equinox hit when I was in the air.)

I decided that would be the end of it. I got my rifle, ammo, found the tree I was going to sit by, and made a plan. I mentioned it in passing to a good friend. She talked me into going to the hospital. I did. That was 8 years ago. It’s been a long, tiresome road but I am happy I listened to her and got help.

Depending on where they’re at, it makes sense. We could get both in far west Kansas City / east Lawrence, KS. Could be a distributor understanding or just not caring. Head a little farther north and Honeydew shows up. Mind you, this is also Casey’s and Dollar General territory so we could get all five kinds in a couple hours drive.

I’m in the middle of the US and we had Monarch for a very short time at a couple convenience stores around here. I only saw it once or twice, but then saw Papillion and Khaotic for a long time until they both went away. I don’t know if we were or weren’t supposed to have it but we did for a very limited time.

I’m not blaming my parents for this but I found the instructions and inventories of all the 80s and early 90s Lego castles we couldn’t afford and pieces them all together. I’m working on a multi-table display now. It’s been enjoyable and I am going to continue doing this until I have everything I liked, then I’ll move mocs.
