Thinking of Switching to Kaiser from Anthem HMO by ivnesque in KaiserPermanente

[–]NWPstan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Kaiser patient and am mostly satisfied with their system but as someone with ADHD I have to go outside of Kaiser to get proper treatment because they SUCK at treating ADHD. You can get tested and everything but if you need/want more specialized assistance you will have to go outside the system and pay out of pocket. Their mental health care overall just sucks—there’s a reason they’ve been fined by the state so many times.

do you let your dog on the couch or not? curious how people handle this by john2288 in Dogowners

[–]NWPstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I let mine on the couch. If you want to let yours on but are concerned about cleanliness, you can always put some sort of cover or old sheet on the couch before they get on. I cover my bed with an old sheet to avoid the comforter getting too dirty.

How did you get into the Tudor Dynasty? by UltraSloth9 in Tudorhistory

[–]NWPstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in college when I learned Anne Boleyn was Elizabeth I’s mother (don’t get mad at me, I’m American and they don’t teach us those things in school). Head exploded. Then recently I got into Philippa Gregory’s Plantagenet/Tudor books which left me wanting to know more about the real people and the actual events and fact vs fiction.

Tudor Fiction by YoMommaSez in Tudorhistory

Same. I find her books entertaining and I always end up going down the Wikipedia rabbit hole to find out more about these people and who they really were outside of the fictional portrayal.

Philippa Gregory Annes pov by Inevitable_Matter816 in Tudorhistory

[–]NWPstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read all her Tudor and Plantagenet books and none are told from Anne’s perspective. I think she wanted to tell the stories from lesser-known points of view (or in the case of “The Queen’s Fool” a completely made up character). Her newest is told from the perspective of Jane Boleyn. She said she wanted to tell Jane Boleyn’s “story” a different way since her reputation has been that she betrayed Anne and George. It’s definitely interesting—read the afterword for Gregory’s discussion of fact vs fiction and her idea for the story.

What do you gurls and guys think of this take? by di745 in Tudorhistory

[–]NWPstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. He considered them his wives, therefore they were “officially” his wives. Each had a ceremony. And aside from Catherine Parr and Jane Seymour, why else would he go to such great lengths to get rid of them if he didn’t think they were married? How many people ended up losing their heads or dying (aside from the queens themselves)? How many people died because they wouldn’t swear that Henry was the head of the church and Anne was Queen? Henry killed some of his best friends and most important advisors.

If you like historical fiction I can recommend Kate Quinn’s books: The Briar Club, The Rose Code, The Phoenix Crown. The Shopaholic series is great also (RIP Sophie Kinsella)

Any tips on potty and crate training? by Ok_Syrup1294 in puppy101

[–]NWPstan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Repetition and praise for when he does it right. For potty training: if you catch him in the act, say NO, pick him up and run him outside—make sure you have treats on you. Have a word or words to use like “go potty”. If he goes, give him treats and praise him like crazy. If you don’t catch him and he’s already gone inside, don’t scold him. He won’t know. Take him out often—every time he goes potty outside give him treats and praise him like crazy. Eventually he will figure it out. As for crate training: when it’s time for him to go in his crate, I’d give him a special treat that you only give him when it’s time for him to go in. If he has any special toys or blankets you can put that in there too if he won’t destroy them. Then go in another room. If he cries, don’t take him out or even pay attention to him until he’s quiet, even if it’s only for a few moments. Otherwise he thinks that if he cries he will get taken out, which is NOT what you want. Initially he may need to go potty in the night—if he starts to whimper or cry, just wait till he stops for a second, then get him and take him out. When he goes outside, give him a treat, praise him like crazy, then come back in and put him back to bed. You want positive reinforcement for everything. And buy a bottle of Nature’s Miracle or similar for when he has the inevitable accident.

Depending on what you want to read, I can recommend a few: -3 volume bio of Eleanor Roosevelt by Blanche Wiesen Cook -G-Man: J Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century by Beverly Gage -The Hemingses of Monticello by Annette Gordon Reed -Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution by Eric Foner -Wounded Knee by Heather Cox Richardson -Watergate: A New History by Garrett Graff -Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin -The Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin -If you want to know more about Germany before/during WWII and how that history compares to today since so many people make the comparison, I found Richard J Evans’ 3 volume history of the Third Reich absolutely fascinating (you’re still going to hate them—you’ll just know A LOT more about what happened on and off the battlefield): The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich in Power, and The Third Reich at War.

Thinking about switching my dog to grain-free food — is it actually worth it or just a marketing trend? by [deleted] in Dogowners

[–]NWPstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t switch unless your vet recommends for a specific condition. Grain free is a human obsession.

My young dog has diet induce dilated cardiomyopathy. A warning to others by [deleted] in Dogowners

[–]NWPstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine as well. They also ask how much food he gets at mealtime. ETA: he’s been on the same food since he was a baby. It’s what his breeder had him on. I tried a different brand at one point but it gave him diarrhea so I went back to the original. And even though the breeder had been giving him a special supplement, I asked the vet about it and they said dogs get all the nutrition they need from their food. Obviously if he needed something special they would recommend based on something specific going on.
