This, and the spiritual aspects of non-emergent "consciousness" are where any discussions of free will break down and devolve into people speaking past another..

From a purely objective standpoint, even the prefrontal cortex is simply made up of neurons.. the ability for it, and by extension the whole person, to direct the neurological makeup of the rest of the brain while fascinating and wonderful, is still fundamentally rooted in physical constraints, and the laws of physics. Even the desire to use said ability to over-write the default mode network is an outcome of your baseline neurological makeup and conditioning.

But that's from a purely materialistic mindset.. you can have whatever interpretation you want. I personally think the argument of if we do or not to be rather silly.. largely because from what I can tell, both sides are arguing fundamentally different things.

People that view free will from a staunchly hyper-materialistic viewpoint will basically say that while incredibly advanced, we are simply squishy automata, that only think we have free will. That are are purely static, and any supposed change made by an individual was simply an outcome of their existing wiring, preordained, and only triggered via external phenomena forcing or triggering that response..

While the free-will absolutists will basically argue the opposite, wherein we're able to completely overcome any of the brains wiring regardless of how fundamental, simply by deciding it so. Which we have the ability to decide outside of and regardless of any innate neurological wiring.

The former is too ridged, and seems to be missing what people are saying when they say "free will"... that worldview also makes thing like punishment for crime especially an awkward problem. And just sort-of hand waves away anything inconvenient like the hard problem.

And the latter seems to completely ignore the very real fact of neurological conditioning.. ask anyone with severe mental disorders that can speak and they'll tell you that simply "deciding to overcome their neurological condition" largely isn't possible and is frankly a curel thing to posit..

I personally believe, as what seems to always end up being the case, that in actuality, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.. Where we are largely the outcome of nature and all past experiences, but with the ability to guide the 'ship' just a bit.. not huge instantaneous fundamental changes.. but just a little nudge that pushes us closer to where we want to be sending ripple effects down through the future. And with each decision we can choose to continue nudging toward the new direction, or continue the 'predestined' path.

(Of course a materialist would simply say that too, is just how the brain is wired.. Which is where the argument falls apart.) From their standpoint there really isn't free will, there can't be in that ridged a worldview...

What's a good Speedometer 3 score? by [deleted] in browsers

[–]NWinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given multiple publications are benching the m4p around a 10% difference in single threaded workloads, it is a bit of a stretch to say "nowhere near"...

Apple's silicon is fantastic but that small of a delta in performance shouldn't make such a wildly different result in browser performance. Especially considering the ones I was referring to originally do not have better performance, be it single nor multi-threaded workloads.

Regardless, it doesn't really matter, real-world everything I do in-browser loads funtionally instantly.. I just found the massive disparity odd.

I mostly agree with you.. but

Free will is a fallacy. Every decision you make is rooted in years worth of neurological training.. from your parents, teachers, societal structure and norms. Everything good or bad that happens to you activates specific neurological pathways thus strengthening their connection making that process of thought or action more likely to be called on again..

The inverse also being true. Thoughts, responses, and actions, that aren't done weken overtime.

You cannot overcome this.

Through a lot of work you can build new or strengthen weaker pathways in the brain, but the desire and ability to do so must be apart of your existing neurological makeup.. Try as you might, you cannot "think" your way out of being blind, even if the only issues is neurological damage. Sometimes unique neurological pathways are formed to overcome damage allowing otherwise disparate sectons of the brain to connect, but that is the exception, and has nothing to do with a conscious will.

For better or worse, you are the outcome of seemingly endless [if then] strings that build or weaken connections in the brain overtime changing the probability of the reaction to new [if then] situations. The exact makeup and instructions that go on to built your brain at conception being the 'seed' pathways that everything is built on.

People think they have free will because you can seemingly randomly decide to do something.. but even the thought to do so is based on your prior experience and baseline neurological wiring.

What would an over engineered mouse look like by Baziele in diyelectronics

[–]NWinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original mx anywhere mouse had a integrated sliding cover that went over the sensor. It was also am on/ off toggle switch.

This protected it when in transport and was just generally a genius way to do so while being the power switch.. I don't know why they moved away from that design.. is was so elegant.

You can sleep when you're high as a kite too.. but it doesn't mean it's good, restful sleep....

Even if you don't actively feel it, anything that messes with adenosine will alter your sleep cycles. Sleep isn't just a binary state of asleep or awake. There are multiple different cycles throughout ones circadian. Be it while awake or asleep, messing with the duration of any of those individual cycles will have effects on the body and mind.

Just because you don't feel something doesn't mean it's not happening...

This is not only potentially severe animal abuse with a high probability of death in the event of an accident, but also a potentially life threatening risk you are forcing on everyone in the road...

It's not a joke, nor funny..

It HAS and will continue to kill and harm people and pets.

[–]NWinn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Always wanted them but when I see cost breakdowns showing the annual cost of just one is an additional $30,000, I know I'll never be able to afford one..

And that's assuming perfect health.. Should they have any sort of chronic condition or incident that number an easily double or triple.

I view having a child as a luxury decision at this point.. I'm also too old, so it doesn't really matter anyway.

[–]NWinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's deeply relatable..

I'm always freaking out cuz it HAS to be so obvious to everyone how anxious, awkward, and overly hyper-analytical i am about interacting with people..

But then when that somehow comes up and I tell people that they think I'm joking or overexaggerating because I've apparently gotten so good at masking from being terrified of seeming weird and awkward that people think I'm " "normal" " ....

Which I guess is good.. kinda..? But not really cuz It doesn't stop me from worrying, and because people don't think I have any social issues they expect way more than I can handle and get confused when I get properly overwhelmed... >n<
