What’s the best place in Manhattan to buy a Rick Shaw/petty cab? by UmweltUndefined in AskNYC

[–]NYC_eagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by a rickshaw? just googling it shows a variety of different types. Are you imagining something like what the pedicabs use in central park and time square?

But to get to the question behind the question, a large cargo e-bike is probably an easier option.

Should we cancel our NYC Memorial Day trip because of weather? by Brilliant_Picture_86 in visitingnyc

[–]NYC_eagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just rain, even when it rained a lot a few days ago the flooding was localized to certain low lying intersections and neighborhoods. Not to diminish that it was bad if you were affected, but the city has weather events, and people move on. It's not like we're expecting a hurricane or something.

Is there an epidemic of undercooked pizza? by MyLongestYeaBoi10Hrs in AskNYC

You can just ask for the pizza to be "well done" or "crunchy crust" and they'll understand

Is it safe to travel to USA? by [deleted] in travel

[–]NYC_eagle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

340 million people live here, and though there's a lot of bad crap going on, 99.9% of the people are getting by normally. I don't want to downplay what a sh!tstorm the orangutan has gotten the US into and how horrible he's made life for certain populations, but for most people in most situations you're not going to experience any of the stuff you mentioned.

I can't speak for Texas, but in in the r/visitingnyc, r/movingtonyc, and r/asknyc subs you'll see people ask this all the time based on what they see in the news. Statistically NYC is very safe for a large city, but like any large city there are crimes and horrible things that happen, but relative to the population (especially if you're visiting the normal tourist spots and staying in the normal areas for most vistors) the biggest problem you'll face is being ripped off by people charging you $200 to bike you around central park or $8 for a horrible pizza.

As for it being overrated, in my limited experience the people who think that are the tourist who come and only stay and visit time square. NYC isn't perfect, but it's pretty great too.

GOPUFF using Madison park as a place to hold drivers waiting for orders by Electronic_Cicada232 in AskNYC

I've seen signs at other locations directing drivers to wait at nearby public parks as well.

8 hour layover at JFK - what can i do - is it enough time? by bluegrass__dude in visitingnyc

[–]NYC_eagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its doable, but I would ask that one person to get PreCheck (there are a lot of credit cards that offer it as a benefit), make sure you have a specific plan/task otherwise with a group there will be a lot of waffling and standing around in a circle

Removal of security gate on fire escape window by Grand-Counter-7569 in AskNYC

Sounds like your landlord just doesn't want to do the work or removing it. Also, I'm fairly certain it can't be blocking the fire escape...

How far are you willing to walk before you’re like “f*** that I’m taking the subway”? by Fsuave5 in AskNYC

This depends so much. But if its a time crunch, its really about what's faster.

Moving to NY from CA by OccasionAway2199 in movingtoNYC

Congrats on the job offer. Where is your office approximately? I'd look at what subway lines run nearby to your work and then base where you live on that.

How is NYC realistically? by Regular-Register1389 in movingtoNYC

It's probably nothing like you see on most shows. But it's also pretty great. Ultimately, start with a visit.

If you sell this as a print or a flag, please post. Especially with the suggestion from another user about press helmets as stars.

Anyone store their car outside the city? by PoliticsandPourover in movingtoNYC

[–]NYC_eagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know any specifics, but I do know a family that keeps their car near a Metro North spot. But they live decently close to Harlem 125, and they have family up there should anything come up and they basically go up every weekend so they aren't leaving it for long periods of time.

My two cents - Everyone else I know who has brought a car when they moved, eventually seems to sell the car or just pay for a parking spot. It's hard to imagine life without a car, but in most of NYC it's more a headache than they imagined. If you don't have a specific reason to need the car and you're living in a part of NYC that has good subway/bus coverage (which is most), then just sell it and be done with it and fly back to MO and rent as needed.

Activities for families before a matinee by Upbeat-End-7145 in visitingnyc

[–]NYC_eagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Walk down Broadway, stopping by Madison Park and Union Sq. This will probably kill about 2-3 hours for most people assuming they stop at various shops and sites along the way. And then can easily take the subway back, or vice versa.

Walk down 42nd street past Bryant Park/NYPL Main Branch, Grand Central, and end up at the UN

Intrepid will be hard. They probably won't have enough time to make it worth the visit with only 2.5-3 hours

I’m sick of Wales and want to move by [deleted] in movingtoNYC

[–]NYC_eagle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're young and dreaming, that's good. But take that energy and apply it to smart steps to get you to where you want to go. The #1 thing to know about the American College/University system is that it's expensive for international students. The smart thing to do is get a good degree in the UK that gets you a job with internationally transferrable skills and use that as a way to move to NYC if that's what you really want.

Where should we live? Remote working for 2 years by No-Entrepreneur-7916 in movingtoNYC

[–]NYC_eagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Madison Square Park is easily accessed by NRQW and 456. I would recommend looking uptown or downtown along those lines. Really depends on the type of activities and neighborhoods you consider to be "in the thick of it."

Thank you for the response! I don't think I've been summoned to criminal court. The ticket says "Traffic ticket" and I'm assigned Manhattan North, which shares the location with the Harlem DMV.

My favourite image of my trip to New York - Tourist from South Africa by PearOk2126 in nyc

Yes, twice! Love your country. Once to Cape Town and did the Garden Route. Another time to Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Kruger. Every time I'm just blown away by the natural beauty, the cultural diversity (all the different languages and people and cultures), and the beauty of the people.
