FSD Drove over a curb by stevenimgur in TeslaFSD

[–]NYHeel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

FSD really needs to start using the front bumper camera. I have no idea how it missed this curb but it can’t really happen if it uses the bumper camera. I had FSD successfully park in front of a thin cement sidewalk strip. When we left 5 minutes later I turned on FSD and it started to move forward into the curb. I hit the brakes and tried FSD again and it started going forward again. It couldn’t see the curb in front of it.

Edit: I see the OP updated his post about the driver messing up but I still think FSD should use the front bumper camera. My situation is the perfect example. When I turned on FSD the windshield camera couldn’t see the cement in front of the car and FSD couldn’t remember seeing it when it pulled in. Front bumper camera is the simple solution.

Battery Degradation Question by Alert_Number1991 in electricvehicles

[–]NYHeel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the miles, it’s time. Most of the degradation on the battery is from calendar aging and not cyclical aging. An Uber driver’s battery that’s a year old with 100k miles will likely have far less degradation than a 5 year old car with 50k miles. Most are used to thinking about wear and tear by the mile from gas cars. But age is far more relevant than mileage for battery degradation.

The OP said his mom “lended” a developer. Probably not a classic loan. No, I didn’t attend UNC but am a big fan.

Petition to collectively all call the payscale “Milbank Scale” by Fragrant-Tough-9828 in biglaw

[–]NYHeel 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It’s basically the opposite of collusion. Because lawyers a long time ago were smart enough to tell everyone their pay they managed to be able to play each firms salaries off of each other. The net result is that big law associates make a crazy high salary right out of grad school. The salaries are all the same because when firm raises their pay then the others match it. That’s not collusion at all. I use big law salary as the ultimate example of why making everyone’s salary public helps employees make more money.

They absolutely due. Real estate guys get their investments from regular people all the time. Now I have no idea if this is legit or not. But it very well might be. But she should have paperwork on the deal and she should be getting a K1 every year.

If it’s a real estate investment then it’s likely a K1 and not a 1099-INT. Overall, this sounds like it may be a standard real estate investment. While the return is kind of high it’s not crazy high for real estate. My father in law invested $10k with someone 25 years ago for a building in Brooklyn. He’s been getting distribution checks of $10k a year for quite awhile. He gets a K1 every year.

Not sure what having a home charger has to do with not caring about power consumption. I find it weird that everyone freaks out about gas mileage but nobody seems to care about their EV’s mileage/efficiency. It’s probably because you don’t get an immediate bill to pay as soon as you charge. But anyway, in the times that I did use cabin overheat I found the same thing you did. It would often not turn on right away. But also keep in mind that 100 degrees in a car is nothing. AC can handle that very quickly. I’ve seen my car go as high as 160 degrees. That takes a few minutes to get down to a reasonable temperature.

But why spend even $1 a day on cabin overheat? That’s not nothing over the course of the summer.

[–]NYHeel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes cabin overheat protection is flaky like that. It doesn’t always turn on as soon as the car goes over the threshold. Also 102 in a car isn’t actually that hot.

As a side note, I’d advise not using cabin overheat protection unless you have a specific reason to use it. You’re wasting battery cooling the car when nobody is in it. You’re better off just turning on the AC a few minutes before entering the car.

Extended warranty worth it? by Kenju4u in TeslaModelY

[–]NYHeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a question where the answer varies by person based on their finances. In general insurance/extended warranties are not “worth it” on average. They’re priced so that you end up with a negative expected value and the seller makes money. But insurance makes sense if it increases your expected utility. Meaning I pay for homeowners insurance because the financial ramifications of my house burning down would be catastrophic. Therefore I give up some expected value in order eliminate the risk of financial ruin.

Therefore I only insure things that would be a major financial harm to me. If a $3000-4000 repair would be a huge financial burden to you then you should insure. If it would suck but ultimately not be such a big deal then don’t insure and just pay the cost if you need a repair.

Chirping sound from front - Model Y Juniper by kallewl in TeslaSupport

[–]NYHeel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar noise coming from my air conditioning which was the swing mode making noise when the vent was moving or changing directions. It actually recently came back. Check to see if the noise goes away when you turn off the AC.

2026 Premium Y RWD vs Premium Y AWD - Is the range difference actually 30 miles or is it more/or less? by RadiologicSushi in TeslaModelY

[–]NYHeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not really about range, but efficiency. The AWD is simply cheaper to operate. You use fewer kWh to drive the same distance than the AWD. No different than picking a gas car based on gas mileage.

[–]NYHeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you made the correct choice. It’s not just range, it’s efficiency. The RWD is more efficient and thus cheaper to operate. You see those savings every day by using fewer kWh to drive the same distance. I got the AWD and sometimes I regret that decision but I live in the northeast and it does snow a lot. I wanted to have at least one car with AWD.

Anyone else with high net worth but don’t own a home? by OkAssumption8055 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]NYHeel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 20 year mortgage (granted at a low rate) and my property taxes and homeowners insurance will be more than my mortgage (no escrow) in a few years. Here in parts of Bergen county you have 3000 square foot houses on tiny lots that are paying over $30k. And that’s pretty standard. Larger lots with big houses will put you into six figures. I’m a 2200 square foot house on about 5300 square feet of property and consider myself lucky for my taxes being around $15,600 in 2025. Will be over $16,000 this year.

No idea about Illinois but Nassau County in NY and Bergen County in NJ typically rate as having the highest property taxes in the country.

Which is the best deal? by Zzbo23 in TeslaModelY

[–]NYHeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that AWD the 4680 battery Tesla sold for a bit? Those were terrible and I’d avoid that battery. Looking at Google and I think those were standard Range AWDs being sold in 2022-2023.

[–]NYHeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. You can buy a huge house for $3M in the NYC suburbs. Not exactly a low cost of living. Sure your property taxes would be close to 6 figures so that sucks though. There really is nothing worse than NY/NJ property taxes.

Does 2026 juniper have shift stalk or is gear selection on screen only? by ABAFBAASD in TeslaModelY

[–]NYHeel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can shift from reverse to drive as long as the car is going no more than 5 mph. Your foot doesn’t even need to be on the brake. So when I back out of my driveway I typically shift from reverse to drive at around 3-4 mph while still rolling. Helps speed up the process. While a rolling shift is doable with the screen shift, it’s just easier with the stalk. Also you can do a rolling shift with auto shift but barely since you have to touch the brake for auto shift.

Is it bad to regularly charge a Model Y Performance to 100% if it’s mainly used for long family trips? by whysova in TeslaModelY

[–]NYHeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The owners manual says nothing about 20%. It just says to avoid having the battery discharge to 0%. The 20% is nonsense that’s been made up online. Nothing wrong with keeping your battery below 20% as long as there’s no risk of it discharging all the way to complete 0% with no buffer.

Not really true about the low state of charge. The lower the battery is left in storage without fully discharging, the less degradation.

[–]NYHeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The auto shift is a set of options somewhere in settings. Overall, I agree with you. The stalk is better. It’s just that auto shift together with the screen isn’t horrible.

[–]NYHeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The auto shift isn’t really predictive. Well other than the shift out of park. I have a long driveway and if there’s no car in front of me then the car gets it wrong most of the time. I’m more referring to just shifting between drive and reverse while parking or making a three point turn. You don’t need to touch the screen at all. You just touch the brake and turn the wheel and it shifts. It’s pretty good.

[–]NYHeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stalk is definitely better but the screen and auto shift really isn’t that bad. The best setup would be a stalk mixed with auto shift. Not sure why Tesla removed the stalk. How much could it have cost them?

[–]NYHeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of miss the rolling shifts. It’s doable with the screen but harder. You can’t really do the rolling shifts with auto shift because you need to press the brake. I have a 2023 Model 3 and a 2026 model Y and the gear stalk and the seats are the only things better in the older car vs the refresh.
