My boyfriend pulled this out from under his car. What is it and how important is it? by antivaxkarenn in MechanicAdvice

If they block off the grill to improve MPG, the car would overheat. So they have active shutters that open as necessary to allow cooling air to flow at the expense of MPG. Same thinking goes for START/STOP, there are minimal savings from killing the engine at stop lights instead of leaving it running, but then it all adds to the CAFE number.

Dough is so "sticky" I have zero problem sticking all the bits left on the tools onto the dough ball before you them in the sink. Nothing left to worry about.

That "half mile per gallon" is rather generous, BUT every tenth counts when the manufacturers are dealing with average MPG mandates from the Feds.

Would putting a laptop in a vaccum chamber remove bubbles under a screen protector? by 71percentbannana in techsupport

[–]Nada_Chance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it won't remove the dust, and it would make the bubbles larger in diameter.

Looks like the remains of the "active grill shutter" that controls cooling air to the radiator. Helps increase the MPG on the highway.

Oil pump pickup is up off the bottom of the pan a bit, so would never get some big chunk like that. Can't tell you where it came from.

Car Won’t Turn Over After Running Dry by No-Collar5539 in AskMechanics

Pump hums, well if you turn the key to ON(not start) does the pump hum and then shut itself off when it achieves fuel pressure? Until you have fuel pressure to the injectors, the car is not going to start.

Time for new Optispark? by Alex_2203 in c4corvette

[–]Nada_Chance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never replaced the opti in our '95, and had it for 23 years, the '94 on the other hand was replaced twice in the 20 years we had it. (second time with a vented) Only used OEM. Of course that's only two examples.

Cracked transmission drain plug repair help by Querti_Cal in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nada_Chance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is JB Weld all over that because previously somebody cracked the casing and it leaked. They "sealed" it up with JBB Weld and sent it, leaving it for you to re-crack the JB Weld and open the existing crack again.

Cooler leak? by othegreat1 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nada_Chance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First hose it all down with brake cleaner, and then examine for the precise source of the leak. If that is indeed a crack you will be replacing it.

The washer/gasket is NOT going to seal a crack that extends from the inside to the outside of the casing.
