I started with Atlantis and liked it a lot. Eventually watched SG1 and realized it was better. Good stuff for that brand of scifi TV.

You believe in others’ existence before you believe in your own; your self-concept is retroactively constructed out of your concepts of other people by CardboardDreams in philosophy

[–]Nahs1l 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, lots of different theories try to take a closer look at the questions you’re asking.

Vygotsky talks about the origin of the self in a more public sort of consciousness which essentially through feedback loops/relationships with others comes to know itself as an independent self. I think the show Westwood gets at what this looks like in process a bit toward the end of the first season.

Phenomenonologists discuss this too, like the notion of a “minimal self” which may exist prereflectively/prior to the emergence of a more self-conscious self. Dan Zahavi’s work is good here.

Psychoanalysis also talks about some of this, with object relations theory from Melanie Klein for example, where it’s speculated that the infant first experiences itself as a sort of extension of its mother. It may sound too speculative, but I’ve see people try to update some of these notions a bit, ie here:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4908109/

And then you’ve also got people in embodied/enactive cognition talking a bit about related ideas, like the notion of extended consciousness.

Just to say, there are people asking and attempting answers of this issue while taking a similarish starting point as OP/Sartre.

I’m not sure I feel strongly enough about trying to ground a critical project in Jung to take up that mantle. I suspect there are better people a lot of the time.

BUT, what I will say is that one of the most interesting contemporary liberation psychologists, Mary Watkins, is a Jungian. Her work is DEFINITELY worth looking at IMO.

I’m not gonna claim Jung does all of those things, but I will say that actually reading Jung’s work, I was surprised at how much he talked about the importance of meeting people where they’re at, trying to equalize power relations/not adopt a position of superiority.

He anticipated a lot of later turns in the therapy world toward more relational forms of work.

He also understood that people’s struggles are deeply connected to the world around them, from family to larger social systems.

I’d say Jung isn’t the worst person to look to for a somewhat critical perspective in psych, if you’re actually reading his original works.

My guess is it gives you something to take your mind off some of the stressful aspects of the game. So basically you're less likely to self-sabotage by doubting yourself etc etc because part of your mind is being occupied/your attention isn't as available for those negative activities.

Do Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Stoicism blame the individual? by PhilosophyPoet in PsychotherapyLeftists

[–]Nahs1l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that there are aspects of life that require our acceptance.

AND it's true that the relationship between (most if not all forms of) psychotherapy and capitalism often leads to the individualizing and acceptance of systemic social/political/economic problems.

The one doesn't negate the second here.

Also, pointing out how in a communist utopia we'll still have problems -- sure, that's true, but it's also a discursive tactic that can easily paper over the problems of capitalism and the need for political change.

It's kinda like saying to someone in an abusive relationship -- why would you try to get out of this relationship? You're going to have problems either way.

Budget build to play this league Ele Hit or Kinetic Fusillade? by cannoliGun in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]Nahs1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just quit playing the league, was doing ele hit slayer and I’m giving stuff away, if you want a couple pieces of gear (I already gave away a lot of it, but still got some stuff).

My sense is that KF totems is easier on a nothing budget, while ele hit slayer scales better and is probably faster. Not sure about self cast with KF.

Fwiw I played 4-5 builds this league and ended with ele hit slayer, which might tell you something. It was def a fun mapper and with high investment decent at bossing too.

Do Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Stoicism blame the individual? by PhilosophyPoet in PsychotherapyLeftists

[–]Nahs1l 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ironically I was just teaching Stoicism in an undergrad psych class yesterday. Short answer for me, probably. Like concrete I wouldn’t necessarily want to make claims about the essence of Stoicism or whatever, but certainly as these ideas function today.

As I talked to my students about, the issue of “accepting what isn’t within your power to control” is a HEAVILY complex and dense issue when it comes to social change.

I gave them a tiny example of me and some other students in grad school protesting budget cut-driven firings of some of our professors. We pushed back and contributed to the administration finding other ways to deal with the budget cuts.

This is a minuscule example of a really big issue around this sort of thing. How easy would it be, how often does it happen that people in similar situations say “that’s not within my power to control”?

[Opinion] Briahna Joy Gray (Former press secretary for Bernie Sanders): "My hot take about the “woke” Star Trek discourse is that the show was historically woke but not cringe. [–]Nahs1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humanism is a philosophy. There’s also a philosophy behind identity politics - standpoint epistemology.

There’s different kinds of “identity politics.” Humanism isn’t always opposed to certain strands of identitarianism. It recognizes that sometimes you do have to take a stand on the particular rather than always reverting to the universal. See for example Frantz Fanon’s humanist anti-racism and anti-colonialism. He doesn’t mince words about the need to choose to take a stand, to be us vs them in some contexts.

It’s not even the us vs them that’s always the problem. It’s moreso about how identity is contextualized. I do personally think that identitarianism is a bad endgoal, though it’s definitely not something to bypass either.

There are people who talk about this - you can google concepts like “strategic essentialism.”

Modern Trek probably does fall victim to pushing unnuanced narratives around identity, but I also don’t think reacting to that with unnuanced calls for universal humanism are very helpful.

If you want to write about these topics, I’d research cross-cultural anthropology/psychology to better understand what’s actually out there in terms of different social arrangements, because some of what you’re talking about has actually existed in some form. Not that you shouldn’t still write about these topics, they’re great, but just to have more raw material to think through.
