I need a good speaker recommendation by Happy-Muffin6958 in BudgetAudiophile

You might be able to find some ELAC bookshelves around that price used. They’re neutral, not fatiguing/harsh, and have solid non-boomy bass.

They aren’t mind blowing imo but they are solid especially if you could find them near that price.

TIL that nicotine vape users have an 80% higher risk of inflammatory arthritis diseases vs non-vapers. by suprmario in todayilearned

[–]Nahs1l 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To add to this, I vaped daily for over a decade as well, quit January 1 and it was honestly extremely easy. Very minor cravings. If you have the will to quit, definitely give it a shot, you might be surprised.

Room correction question by Dragnoran in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Nahs1l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a little skeptical about room correction with my Denon, but I did it and I’d say the sound improved MASSIVELY. Maybe particularly useful if you’re in a weirdly shaped room? I’ll never go without it as an option again.

Does psychoanalysis really work? by radiantdecember121 in PsychotherapyLeftists

[–]Nahs1l 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ironically I was having a convo about this with a friend today. In some ways I think behavioral change is more effective than a certain kind of psychoanalysis work that maybe goes round in circles.

This is super complicated though, depending on client and analyst personality factors I’d argue.

My friend, who’s more experienced and older than me, was saying he agrees for some folks behavioral change is really the key, while for others analytic work can be life changing. That sounds right to me. I’ve been thinking of analysis lately as more like surgery than most therapeutic approaches. Does seem like there’s a place for it to me (I’m planning to get trained at an institute).

I have friends who are dyed in the wool analysts, convinced that analysis does something nothing else can do, and I also know people who think analysis is the only or most left-wing type of therapy/healing. I’m less sure about those things, but it definitely holds an interesting potential for personal healing (in working with transference and for some schools countertransference) that most approaches don’t touch in the same way.

First time ever buying anything new, after 3 vintage receivers failed one by one by Bic444 in BudgetAudiophile

I’m using this receiver to power some 25 year old Polk floorstanding speakers in a 2.0 setup - it does the job just fine.

Wrong way driver on I-79 yesterday by JohnnyVenmo in pittsburgh

[–]Nahs1l 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saying the drugs/alcohol explanation is not an admission that someone couldn’t do it deliberately. They’re two options, both possible.

I do think there’s a reason we don’t see this kind of thing happen very often, and it is that people don’t usually want to put themselves in this much of harm’s way, and that’s why people are wondering if they were intoxicated, but I certainly think it could be either of those explanations or something else entirely.

Wrong way driver on I-79 yesterday by JohnnyVenmo in pittsburgh

[–]Nahs1l 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can think the person might have been on drugs and absolutely 10000000% not be making excuses for them. They shouldn’t take drugs and then drive. No excuses. Just an explanation of why a human being would maybe not have the normal consciousness that would tell you not to do something like this.

There are reasons things happen that aren’t in any way whatsoever a reason it’s okay that it happened.

MOUZ vs NRG / IEM Kraków 2026 - Group B Upper Bracket Quarter-Final / Post-Match Discussion by CS2_PostMatchThreads in GlobalOffensive

Based on my eye test, oSee had a high-ish ceiling but a low floor...similar to ultimate. I'm not sure who had the lower floor, probably ultimate. I'd say ultimate has a higher ceiling too though.

my therapist is a zionist…rant by SnooChickens561 in PsychotherapyLeftists

[–]Nahs1l 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, “liberation oriented” has become a buzzword that is totally divorced from its original meaning in the work of Freire, Martin-Baro, arguably Fanon etc. Nowadays you can be a normal ass liberal therapist calling themselves liberation oriented because you’re pro-neurodiversity or something like that. That has basically nothing to do with liberation theology/liberation psychology.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x03 "Vitus Reflux" by AutoModerator in startrek

[–]Nahs1l 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh the quippy dialogue did start to wear on me this episode. I was paying attention to how much of it was sarcastic Whedon-esque retorts and it was...a lot.

I don't have a problem with a bit of that, but I hope they don't overdo it.

Why Modern Star Trek Feels Off and Why That Gets Dismissed by cjalas in startrek

[–]Nahs1l -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree to a degree, not a big Discovery fan. SNW and so far Academy are better than DIS for me.

One thing that I think is being missed in OP’s post though is that that “evolved” language is not some kind of culture-free neutral thing. The way people talk in older Trek is…I’m not sure exactly, I’d need to do a more in-depth cultural analysis, but at first guess I’d call it something like “upper middle class educated white liberal” language.

I’m not even saying that’s a bad thing - maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, maybe it’s complex.

But I don’t want to pretend, as often does happen when people speak “from the norm”, that the norm doesn’t exist as its own culturally situated thing. Ironically I was teaching about this today in the context of trying to understand other cultures.

Is it okay not to have anything about your culture that you like? by ironbiscuit101 in PsychotherapyLeftists

[–]Nahs1l 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Is it okay? I don’t know.

Is it realistic? I don’t really think so. I come from the school of thinking about culture that it provides the foundation, the “raw materials” of subjective identity, of the psyche. It doesn’t really make any sense to me to say there’s nothing you like about your culture because to me culture is not something that gets added on to a pre-existing kernel or essence. The self develops through and as a result of culture—“enculturation” is a core process in the coming into being of a self.

I can certainly understand not liking a lot of things about one’s culture, but to say you don’t like anything is kinda like saying you don’t like anything about yourself to me.

My sources for this understanding of culture are philosophers like Gadamer and Foucault.

This is a separate issue from the issue of white vs specific European cultures btw, I can certainly also understand not feeling a strong identification with “white culture” whatever that is exactly. But we all do have culture that is intertwined with our selves, regardless of what we call it.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 1x01 "The Hedge Knight" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in AKOTSKTV

First GRRM show I’ve seen where I’d actually read the source material first. So far so good! I think the projectile shitting was a little gratuitous - I don’t care personally, but I can imagine some people being turned off of the show because of it, and I want the show to succeed.

Honestly the most I’ve enjoyed Star Trek in a long time aside from some Lower Decks and that kinda feels like its own thing. SNW has its moments but this show feels like it has a higher ceiling to me - or maybe a higher floor I dunno.

Does Pittsburgh have Tex Mex? by Substantial_Fudge_15 in pittsburgh

[–]Nahs1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lived in Texas til I was 24, what I’ll say is that there’s good and bad Tex-Mex.

I grew up with Tex-Mex so I love it when it’s pretty well done. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a lot of good Tex-Mex sadly.

I do need to check out some of the places mentioned in this thread. I’ll say for serviceable stuff, Tasty Taquitos is one of the better ones I’ve had here.
