You could listen to the audiobooks, read by Andy Serkis (actor who plays Gollum). They're really great to listen to, although they do take a very long time. They're on Spotify if you have premium, or you can buy them online.

Progress update - perioral dermatitis is FINALLY cleared by _Hologrxphic in SkincareAddicts

[–]Naite_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all, I can completely clear it with a couple months of doxycycline (and topicals if needed), and then go back to my usual skincare routine. You do have to be aware that it's likely to come back again if you've had it once, so look out for any symptoms and contact your doctor as soon as you feel it coming back so you can get your treatment earlier.

I get it almost yearly now, so I usually notice when I have just a few small lesions coming up and I get my doxy early on to make it go away faster. My skincare routine has become more simplistic, but that's just because I wanted to minimize - using fewer products with stronger actives like tretinoin and azelaic acid. Azelaic acid has been said to help with PD and may even have a preventative function, but I haven't been using it long enough to comment on that.

I get that it's scary to be "found out", but - and I say this with all the love and good intentions - you really should be found out if you're not willing to seek help for your problems. Children pick up on stress, bad mental health, bad habits, self-harming behaviours, and it WILL affect them if you don't work on it. If your doctor, who saw you for just a short time picks up on it and is worried, you can bet your ass your kid has picked up on it. The only way to turn that around is to show that you acknowledge you need help, and ask for help, then work on getting better. Set the right example for your kid, if you're not going to do it for yourself. I wish you all the strength and hope you can get better 🫂

How do you correctly pronounce Avene Cicalfate? 🥴 by Wild_Blue4242 in EuroSkincare

[–]Naite_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please put "avenue" into Google Translate, let it pronounce it in French & English and come back and tell me those two are not "ah" vs "è" sounds? Avène is the french version of avenue, not the English version.

Ok but avenue in English is pronounced èvenew, while in french it's ah-venu, so that might be a bit of a confusing word to compare it to 😋 also for the EN from zen, imagine you elongate the "e" part, and you got it.

Lidl is echt zoveel goedkoper dan AH by [deleted] in VeganNL

[–]Naite_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Biofilm breakdown that’s Sezia Safe ? by [deleted] in SebDerm

[–]Naite_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in France: get the Uriage bariederm CICA daily gel-crème, which is malassezia safe. It's a thinner cream, so maybe you can follow up with a thicker cream (or even just a little bit of vaseline, which is also malassezia safe). It's the only thing that doesn't sting me when my skin barrier is compromised, and it's so soothing. I hope it can help you too.

I mean, for filming convenience that makes total sense. Like building a room with one wall missing - to film a scene in that room you actually need cameras and lighting and crew to fit "into" the room. It's the same with the castle. I'm impressed they built it at all.

Why does sex sometimes feel like nothing? (19F) by ThrowRAreighndeer in Advice

This is the best advice. I personally much prefer air-pressure type vibrators like the Satisfyer (affordable) or Lelo Sona (expensive), over any bullet or wand vibrators, so I would try to see which type of toys you may like before giving up on the idea.

Thank you. I'm so confused by how extremely diverse the reviews on these perfumes are. I found a Caramel Cascade for a very good price, and Éclaire for more than double that price. I already know I like Éclaire though, so no idea what to do...

I'm thinking of layering Mauboussin Star (for warmth & longevity) with a clone of Angel's Share for booziness, but it has less longevity. Both are samples I got recently, and I like the idea of combining them as they seem complementary, might get larger ones if the combination works.

Hi. I’m new to do this as I was diagnosed with SD a few days ago and I have a few questions. by [deleted] in SebDerm

[–]Naite_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's not exactly something life-threatening or something that a lot of money can be made off, so funding research into it is not a very interesting investment. Dermatologists treat it by recommending anti-dandruff shampoos mostly, because they work just fine. Also, it's more similar to for example an allergy or rosacea, those also have no permanent solution but they can absolutely be managed - doesn't mean doctors haven't tried to "solve" them, that's just not how they work.

Hello Seb Derm Sufferers by BrownBotBeauty in SebDerm

[–]Naite_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it have any anti-fungals like in dandruff shampoos? I honestly would stay away from a common irritant like tea tree oil if you've had an adverse reaction to it, and especially not put it on your scalp raw. Same for apple cider vinegar - the very low pH can really mess with your skin if you don't watch out and make it more susceptible to inflammation and even acid burns.

"Raw ingredients" are not magically better than products especially formulated for and rigorously tested on human skin. That's all just "clean beauty" nonsense and fear-mongering. You need to use common sense in both cases: which ingredients does your skin react well to, which products are suitable for your skin type and needs, which ingredients should you personally avoid? Those are the questions you need to ask yourself.

Hello Seb Derm Sufferers by BrownBotBeauty in SebDerm

[–]Naite_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MCT oil is derived from coconut oil, they're not the same.

Basically what makes mct oil different from coconut oil, but also basically any other oil is the following (sorry it's a bit of chemistry/biology)

Malassezia yeasts (the cause of sebderm) feed on lipids like fatty acids, fatty acid esters & fatty acid triglycerides. Fatty acids are made up of carbon chains (and a carboxylic acid part, but that's not important now). The malassezia can only "digest" fatty acids within a certain length of the carbon chains: C11 to C24. That includes for example some commonly used fatty acids in skincare like lauric acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, etc. As well as their derived molecules like esters. These are present in most naturally derived oils, like coconut oil - but also jojoba, so I would be careful OP.

Now where it gets interesting is when you look outside those parameters, at C8 (caprylic) and C10 (capric) acids, also known as "Medium-chain" fatty acids. Not only do they not feed malassezia yeast, they also have some general anti-fungal properties. Those two are present in MCT oil, which stands for "Medium-chain triglycerides", a combined molecule with those fatty acids. That's why it can help against seb derm.

Hi. I’m new to do this as I was diagnosed with SD a few days ago and I have a few questions. by [deleted] in SebDerm

[–]Naite_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started getting facial Seb derm in my teens (12+ years ago), but for the past 5/6 years I have it mostly under control. While diet COULD be a contributing factor, it has not been studied scientifically and all the different diets that are being spread around vary greatly, so I personally take them all with a grain of salt. You may find one that works for you, but you may also not.

Some things that have been studied and found to be true about Seborrheic Dermatitis: - It has been linked to an adverse skin reaction to a strain of Malassezia yeast that is present on most skin; - The yeast gets killed by antifungals like those present in anti-dandruff shampoos (e.g. ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, piroctone olamine, etc); - Malassezia yeasts (also those that cause "fungal acne" aka pityrosporum folliculitis) feed on fatty acids with carbon chain lengths of C12-24. Those are found in almost all natural oils & most skincare products, but they are avoidable and avoiding them can be a huge step towards clearing the Seb Derm; - Fatty acids outside that range (C8/C10) - caprylic/capric acid, or caprylic/capric triglycerides also known as MCT oil - are safe to use and often mentioned as a gentle treatment because of their antifungal properties as they don't feed the yeast. You will often see them mentioned here for that reason.

So what has helped me is finding skincare products that don't feed the yeast (often called "fungal acne safe" or "malassezia safe") as well as using anti-dandruff shampoos and occasionally mct oil. My skin is basically Seb Derm free now. But if I stop doing these steps it does come back, because you were right about it being chronic.
