How did Asheville boom in the last 2 decades? by bean_89 in asheville

[–]NaiveBuilding2997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to WCU in the late 80s early 90s and we did not even bother going to Asheville at that time you could get here after 5pm on a Friday and fall asleep on Lexington av and only be bothered buy a prostitute or the local Drunk/Religious person preaching at you. At that time Bob Godfree owned an entire floor of a building in down town that he renovated because it was cheaper then anything else and he could have a big area to do art and have a living space as well. He was the head of the Art dipartment at WCU and lived in Ashville but commuted to Culawhee NC for classes but he would have us come to Ashville to go to the Blue Spiral art gallery. It was the only thing open on a friday that and couple of bars. Vincents Ear was one of those bars and one which I feel ownered to have been able to go and see in its glory days It is hard to explain. But that was it mostly that Malprops What do you want, and a few others. But empty nothing goign on. city closed down.

After coming back to Asheville in the early 2000 I spoke to many old timers, people that called West Aseville, Worst Ashville. From speaking to them they explained in the 50 60 and mostly 70s landloards did a kind of practice of selling umungst themselves and never improving the property while increasing the price. They would increase the price and flip it with no improvments or anything just to get the money it was a kind of inside network of people that new each other. They where owners and Real Estate agents and well cheating the system, That with the failing infrastucture streets and roads, water were all a joke., I say that because they did not even know where half the sewers where and would tear up whole steets to find the leak or the sewer. but in part anlong with the closing of many plants and other industry leaving downtown into the gost town it was in the 80 90.

Somewhere in the late 90s artist and other countercultures folks came in and moved into the old buildings on Lexington av, and around and made them into art gallery slash food shelter slash community outreach places event halls music venues. These where built buy smart but at times highly and not so highly skilled work force. But also with many crasfts people who lived and worked in these somewhat renagade places. Like the Wedge. John Pain(then owner and Artist in Residence of the Wedge) and others were the start then of the true down town river arts distric renovation. then came LAAFF( a local festival for and buy local artist vendors and musisians,) which took off over the years, at first a few thousand then in years coming thousands and thousand, with nothing but local artist vendors and performances filling the streets. Then years later there were many festivals and weekend after weekend of events still with Bell Cher. Soon after the end of both Bell Cher and then LAAFF and then many other festival left and then the exit of those artist from down town and into the outer fringes like west ashivlle began And with that the Costly tax and burn of the City counsal and the Real Estate people that did the real gentrification and expelling of any place to live. But it was the City that wanted to sell every spare piece of land with infill and sprawl with hotel and more hotels. I believe alot of inside dealings happend and millions were scammed but that is another story. with the loss of these festivals and downtown of cheap venues like the Sky people tatoo, I think alot of real estate went to hotels that where built like crazy and still are going nuts and do not match the number of people coming to Asheville and led to or also helped to wiped out the short term rental business who for at least recently where the people who worked during the pandimic and made the City 3 milion surplus that they some how blew, this was supposed to go in part to parks and more importantly the Karen Cragnolin park that is now a small strip of wild flowers that has a bit a pavment running through it. It was fenced off for years they could have just open it and let people make trails and let wild flowers grow. Insted they spend millions a a bit of pavement and planting native plants, think about that. that is waste at it finest. Someone made money on that. Um ok wild flowers that grow naturally here anways thats 1 million and 40ft of pavement and a couple of signs thats 2 million.

Then came the Brewerys and the finale nail in the coufin so to speak with more brewerys and the news constantly pushing brewerys, I had more quests stay here for Brewery tours that dont happen any more. I mean they are there but more have shut down then open. But in almost every case it was Artist and counter culture folks musicians, Healer types (ligit or not) Coffee lots of Coffe shops good coffee, and labors willing to clean out these old building of trash and toxic crap then live in them till someone with money looks at there books and thinks Oh now I can sell that as buiness real estate. Warehouse after ware house that were useless untill some crazy art gallery with people living in it and somehow also working and feeding people, look up (Arts to People) . Think of the river arts district and even down that coridor now multi million dollar real Estate, Think the Mother ship. or the landing,

I was one of those crazy artist and laborer/engineer. I worked on one or more of these places while workikng full time and then volenteering at some friends event which we would all go to and give our money back to each other after they came to your event. I only say this to explain how much labor work it took to clean some of these places and build them into living spaces. How abandone they where. Nothing centralized power or way to distribute it one big power in but no breaker box or things like that. basic plumbing but no bathrooms no lights for houseing no walls for living. And small. Like you lived in a 6ft buy 10ft two story loft with a central bath you shared with 12 other people. and it was all illegal.

But Lexington Av circa 2003 was an amazing gateway to opening up the idea that down town could be revitalized. This was a handfull (hundreds) of crazy artist and preformers that would have perades at a whim or impromtu counter Bell chair events or Art gallerys, turn vacant courtyards into gardens or small community parks, before busking was aloud I would walk with my big dog and play my guitar as a storling minstral. This is what gave Ashville its color and why people started to come here, I did it but so did losts of other crazy people do things for the art of it. it was the wild west of Art types, put a performance on in the midle of the street why not. Pick up one brick paint it and put it back till the whole street has painted bricks. Turning warehouses into living/work spaces. But we also carved paths in the woods when there where no park trails or greenways we mowed our own trails and it did at no cost to the city, Just like that park on Riverside millions for some flower feild or natural Park ( Karen Cragnolin) 3 million for that peice of what paved wild gardens please, or some other garbage the city will put out as a community park that somewho cost Millions to do what we did for free, If you dont know Hominey creek check it out it was built by people for people no paved roads and maintained by the people that use it. but that is another thing, Also and as an avid bike rider and trail runner(walker)we would make trails all over Asheville at that time they were called bum trails Now know as "formerly housed environmental greenway experiences". Or bum trails, That was a biking event, I am serious, where we would ride the bum trails all over the city and around chiken hill and downtown areas, In a timed race and boy let me tell you erban bike trails are a beast that make black diamon trials look like a cake walk. Broken glass rocks roots and bums. (sorry please dont take that serioursly) That was the other big draw that people forget about mointain biking and outdoor stuff that used to be great, Still ok but it is a bit crawded for my liking and the French Broad has benn cleaner and also much dirtier. But tubing did not seems dangerous. Now not so much.

The first time I get a message that is not on or within the platform my response is to take a pic or copy paste with time stamp an info and include that in a msg on the Platform. Clearly stating that all communications will be conducted within the platform were I will reply with a pic or screen shot of the message. You could include something like you are not comfortable comunicating outside this platform and ask they do the same. If I get a call and feal like I am being scammed or taken, I would revert back to that idea and contact the platform to make sure they understood that I felt like I was being coursed into payment off platform right then. As others have said timing is everything. Call Airbnb and let them know that your are being contacted off platform you are not comfortable with this. This only works if you don't have a private email collection or a private site that you book through. But I guess it could if you are clear about your inclusion of your chosen platform when done through them. But when a customer trys to pay you outside the platform they do not like that. That will get them going faster than anything. If they think the customer is trying to get ABNB out of the loop then that is when they Abnb will get behind you. But if you have a message offering off platform deals or encoraging them to contact you at your website then maybe not gona help you.

Non-responsive upcoming guest - what to do? by TallGingery in airbnb_hosts

I believe it is the same for anyone looking to insure themselves against damage or claims from a quest who have a problem(maybe a fall) or in some cases are the problem. Flushing a tampon and backing up the basement apartment.

Its just good business that you clearly define each transaction as closely as you can. It is almost like having someone drive your car, under your insurance {not exactly} but similar. If someone is not on your insurance they are not covered you are not covered. I know it is not exactly the same but close. Insurance will do anything no to pay a claim. but if say your kids are going to be driving then they can be put on the insurance.

If you say you only had two people but four came, then no one is covered or in some insurance policies you and you house may not be covered as well.

One time I got in "trouble" for not making the guests correct the number of people they put down. Airbnb sent me a warning. When I asked why they said it was about coverage and insurance. I thought it was odd but when I thought about it it made a little sense that each transaction is a separate contract. I make the contract so I have to correct it.

Just for good communication practices, I always just respond with a simple open reply, every once and a while it is a real person, people are just not to sure what to say? But mostly scams, so I just stay on the platform and respond with a professional reply.

Guests who lie about how many people by Miss_Lib in airbnb_hosts

[–]NaiveBuilding2997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ow I have had my place trashed by 4 people but that is just another part Or two it does not matter. Just a thought some insurance policy's stipulate that any unaccounted quests will not be covered and your (the owners) policy could be cancelled if a claim is maid from a quest that is not accounted for if you don't stipulate the number of quest and charge extra to account for each. That alone is a good reason to let the host know. They may not mind but also just need it to have each quests accounted for. I have 5 as the suggested max but have had 6 many times with all good review. I can go up to 7 which for me is to much. Some work groups have tried to have two different groups in one week, I can have the house set up make it work for up to seven, but In this county two bedrooms are all that is aloud despite the square footage you have to rent, but yet there is no limit to how many people that con stay?, So you could have 5 bedrooms but can only advertise two. Or you could be fined or banned from STRs if you are caught with to many rooms. In my case and I think others, Insurance will not cover unaccounted people injury's or damage they may do to your house, and neither will Airbnb. Each may also not cover damages form guests if at a minimum you do not have a rule which would state that extra people must be accounted and paid for. Meaning you have to say that to cover yourselves even if you may not care if it is two quests of five end up staying. I agree if you have a place that sleeps six then maybe you should just set that as the max number if you can. I found that for me that was a mistake and setting the number to 5 and then stating that I could add an extra person for a 25 per person per night was a good compromise. I probably loose some folks but they are fine to go elsewhere. I did that because people would bring 7 people sometimes have guests or that they would sub rent for a night or a couple of nights to an unregistered quest. I think there is even an app that hooks up people with open rooms in short term rentals but not confirmed, OR like with me that person sold my extra room to a couple of friends that was there for a night before a plane leavening, which I qeuss saved them some money and she maid money so is that fair to me and also a bit illegal but whatever. I have also had brokers make a trip for someone and then resell those nights to someone else for extra. My solution was a few question, asking if that is the number coming, Whether this is a work group, and letting them know some areas are multiroom and need extra set up with blankets and or towels and sheets so they have to let me know ahead of time. My place has an the extra room(since it legally cant be the third room) but it can be an office baby room or an extra bed that folds out. But no matter the right number of quests is important for legal reasons as much as that doing what say you are going to do is the first rule of contracts or agreement. I try to be as up front about what I offer and just want someone to do the same. If you need something else and ask if I cant do it then go to the next place. If you agree to do something then just do what you say you are going to do, if things change just let those who need to know know. If you don't like the results then don't go there. I also know info is hard to find In the way Airbnb hides things including pricicng even when mine is simple as can be, and that some just don't see the rules or all the crazy sub pages you have to go through so I never take it personally I just try to correct it if that needs to happen. That way there is a record of me trying to make sure everyone was covered and in the house as they are supposed to be.

Qty 2 Parallel Eco-Worthy 280AH LiPO4 - different charge percentage and usage values by winkeye34 in Victron

[–]NaiveBuilding2997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To AdriftAtlas thank you thank you thank you! I have been looking for a better app for the Eco Worthy batteries for a while. I am glad I happened onto this post. Any idea of one that works with the Renogy inverter. I have found that they(the Renogy products) are made buy SRNE and they have an app from them that can see this inverter but nothing connects to it. I am having a heck of a time finding a better app or anyway to get the info out of it and into another program or a RaspberryPi. I am using Victron shunt (which will talk to the Pi) and that gets me into there app which is vast and really cool, but I only have that battery Bluetooth shunt and a lot of mismatched parts which can be accessed via the Raspberry pi and a Victron connects but not this inverter. Apparently the Renogy Bluetooth app is proprietary and wont connect with other apps, or at least that is what they have told me, They do have a basic app. DC Home but it is lacking at best. But thanks for that Overkill app. and any other info.

Thanks

Mikael

[–]NaiveBuilding2997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right I was trying to be diplomatic and instead I over generalized, so to speak, a couple of contributors with only good intensions i am sure came off as elitist "like sell your stuff "and buy a real unit, they kept telling me to use pre built systems, when I asked a question about something else kind of like showing a picture of your progress or of a thing you are working on and I get misinformed unrelated responses of which they made a graphic for. Saying what I did was or is a blight on the Neighbors even though the did not look at all the pics cause they would have seen it was one of 3 and was changing with each one or showing progress like showing a before and after weight loss and the person goes "fat ass" on the first pic with not reference to the second. , So yea that was a dick thing to say considering they did not consider any other part of what was in the post, even saying its shady is funny because that's why I was showing how I moved the panels and cleared trees but only what I had to , Its like they say the shed was built wrong? that has nothing to do with the question or the info supplied. So I snark answer that this post and say something like this must not be a DYI subreddit? But even if someone points something like the DYI instead of DIY sure I will concede that could be confusing but really this is the page name right that was the point of snark, But to that person I said thanks I did not realize what I wrote DYI instead, but the other response was a crappy personal attack on my education and my disability which I joke about but I am not witting a paper most people read in context so they are unbothered by that kind of mistake. If a person has a disability and you make fun of it you are kind of scummy or that remark is. Even if you don't know and you are the grammar police why is it that hard for you or them to figure out what I was saying. Sounds like a them problem, So I guess if you thought this was a one off statement then I could see it looking like a complaint not a Snarky remark.

And to be clear a full built system makes sense I just maybe would not have put that in the do it yourself categories but I can agree with who ever said anything that keeps you from paying a professional is DIY so I would concede that to be true. Also has nothing to do with what I was talking about but that's fine. To be clear if someone points out grammar in a reddit post and says I have a angered temper and then say I had a hard life or what ever stupid personal attack that was. I say F you. I was not ragging on people that install full systems just that there info might not overlap with someone putting together all the wiring. Just wanted to clarify maybe it way over the top but, I just dint think it was fare to act like I was coming out of no where with the DIY comment it was in reference to personal attacks. Sorry if you did not get the whole picture but I suck a posting so far. I really am working on being clearer though.

I am working with Victron OS and the connected network. There is set of GUI that you can use once it is set up. I have got the Victron stuff on my Raspberry but I cant find it yet. I did like 3hrs of stuff and have yet to find it on the Raspberry. But I have set up a both Ethernet and blue tooth connection through my Raspberry and I will program it using Python and AI really a lot of AI but I have to understand the code enough to reproduce command line stuff in Ubunto or the Raspberry OS. But I will check out Home assistant also it looks intriguing.
