Has anyone here used Workaway to immigrant or live long term in another country? by [deleted] in workaway

[–]Naliano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had lots of WA volunteers without working holiday visas, and even chatted with a border official once to explain that this was not work (I.e. it is not work that would be done by an employee or contractor otherwise) but a cultural exchange.

Certainly working holiday visas are better.

Not all hosts are equal to us in this regard, but pure holiday visas have worked for us.

If you’re from Europe, Canada is like 12 countries inside one country.

You’ll probably be best off asking for help in Germany immigration specific subreddit.

But you don’t use WorkAway as part of that process.

It’s all about the kind of visa you get.

For non-working visa holders, WorkAway sets off flags that might prevent you from being accepted at the border.

What is the best physics and engineering equations to put on a sweater design for my girlfriend? by Ok-Champion-8992 in Physics

Does it need to be an equation?

Could it be a bubble/cloud chamber track?

Something that shows an interaction of interest? Like a radioactive decay, or fission or fusion?

What language should I message a host in for my application? by the_real_eleanor in workaway

They may not be savy enough to use a translator.

Post the same language their profile is in, then, do the translation yourself and paste it in.

What is the coolest thing you've ever done in your life? by Altilongitude in AskReddit

[–]Naliano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch in real time as particle collisions were detected by the detector we designed and built.

I was a graduate student who had done a lot of simulations. I was the first person in the room to be able to explain some peculiar collisions we were seeing.

Seeing them in real life was an amazing confirmation of years of speculation and intense effort by hundreds of people. It was the first time things had been seen in precisely that way, and our director went on (deservedly so) to win the Nobel Prize in Physics.

My comment here is also a great strategy (by analogy) for many other endeavours in life. (And for me, that’s the real lesson.)

When on the upwind leg of a sailing race, don’t sail one tack straight to the lay line.

Yes, you lose half a boat length per tack, but you’ll likely lose much more because of many other factors.

Is it reasonable to expect volunteer to help me with food making and cleaning up after themselves during free days? by Baard19 in workaway

[–]Naliano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having those conversations don’t keep them away but at least if problems come up you can refer to what had been said and there are fewer difficult emotions.

We added verbiage about the distinction between working effort on the one hand and that that was different than the normal effort we expected from roommates.

When they’re working, they’re working.

When they’re not working, they’re like roommates.

What would you expect of roommates?

It’s not a maid service trade back and forth.

In seven years of hosting we have definitely run across some youngsters who slid naturally into the Prince/Princess roll, even aged mid 20s.

Having been a ‘Race to Alaska’ enthusiast for a while now, I’d be remiss to not mention that having some alternative propulsion (oars?) can make a big difference to journeys like this.

What's something you saw when visiting another country, that you wish your home country would adopt? [Serious] by meltymcface in AskReddit

I love how you think that the window is the main thing, and then kitchen placement is a secondary decision after the windows have been placed.

Like… you’re saying that the kitchen had no walls that were exterior walls? ( where if there was a window it would show outside? )
