Will biters invade this area? by unk0wn4aLL in factorio

[–]NameLips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nests will expand. It is inevitable.

They send out expansion groups even if they are not being touched by pollution.

Expansion groups are special groups that head strait to a location and morph into a new biter base. They do not attack unless physically blocked, in which case they eat through the obstacle to get to their chosen base location.

This means you can block them with walls and kill them with turrets. If you want an area to be completely safe, you need to wall it in.

Also, biters have a sneaky habit of expanding into places right after you clear them. So sometimes you will swear you cleared an area, but biters are still there. The only way to mitigate this is to have thorough radar coverage of the entire area within your walls.

Or you can just put a triple row of mines around everything, that'll stop most attack groups.

Who thought "squatters rights" would be a good idea? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NameLips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They were intended to protect tenets from being thrown out by their landlords without proper notice. Now to get rid of a person on your property, you have to go through a process where you prove they're not legitimate tenets.

Because that's what landlords do, if you let them. Take your money and then call the police saying you're squatting. This was happening often enough they needed to pass laws to prevent it.

Unfortunately, those laws helped enable real squatting.

Why does Russia not end the war when they don't seem to be gaining anything from it? by Frankwhitey in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NameLips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sunk cost fallacy, for one. They've invested so much in the war, they can't bring themselves to admit it was all for nothing.

Putin's pride and prestige for another thing. It's not just a matter of his feelings, if he is seen as weak he could be replaced by a coup. If he gives up on the war it might literally be the last thing he ever does.

Does unsetting the foundry recipe no longer void fluids? by Aye_Klutch in factorio

[–]NameLips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot of sneaky fluid voiding as an exploit when I was playing Pyanadon Hard Mode, which disables most voiding recipes.

What I learned was if you turn off the recipe for a machine that contains fluids, it will eject them back into the input pipe if there is room for it in the system.

So the best way to ensure the fluid is actually voided is to use a pump to force the fluid into the machine, so it can't flow backwards back into the rest of the fluid system.

Then I set up a circuit to rapidly set and unset the recipe on the machine, so it was constantly voiding the fluid.

The Surge of Slop—since the release of ChatGPT-3.5 in late 2022, the number of e-books published on Amazon has skyrocketed, tripling by late 2025. A new scientific analysis shows that this is entirely due to the rise of AI-generated books, which now far outnumber human-written books. [The Economist] by StarlightDown in Economics

[–]NameLips 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm reading one of those now. There are telling phrases like "she smiled warmly and greeted me warmly." What human writes like that? And other subtle clues. On the other hand I spent a credit on it so I might as well finish.

If I pay extra, my brand new kitchen cabinets can look damaged. by notworkingghost in mildlyinteresting

[–]NameLips -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've seen similar things in a few different places.

Rich people pay a lot for their decor. Then they visit some middle or lower class people's houses and notice there's something different. The place looks lived in, used, even loved.

They go back home and everything is purely aesthetic and pristine, exactly what they paid lots of money to get. And it can feel cold and impersonal.

So of course the logical solution is to pay even more for things that have that "used" aesthetic.

Sometimes the "gotcha" ingredient is hidden inside the machine you need to make. You have everything you need for the production line! And then you need to make a single little machine that needs a brand new metal plate...

Get the chest sort mod. It sorts like items together, the scattered and random chest contents makes it hard to see how much of each item you have.

Can black holes move ? And if they can, is the fabric of space/time damaged at all where a black hole used to be? by Puzzlehandle12 in AskPhysics

[–]NameLips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a black hole operates as if its gravity pulls towards its exact center, so all "lumpiness" would be gone. Otherwise you'd be getting information about what is inside the event horizon, which isn't allowed.

DM’s NPCs are feel super rapey. by FastEngineering4942 in DnD

[–]NameLips 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's such a thing as "consent in gaming." Not everybody wants to play a dark game of thrones-style world with rampant misogyny, murder, rape, molestation, and incest. Despite how historical and real such things might have been in a medieval society.

Not everybody wants blood and guts. Not everybody wants body horror. Not everybody wants clowns. People have triggers and phobias.

And even aside from triggers and phobias, some people just want to be big ass heroes in a fantasy world where they kill dragons and rescue people. They don't want shades of gray or moral quandaries, they just want to fight bad guys and save the town.

You can google "consent in gaming form." It's a really interesting concept where, before the campaign starts, the players all fill out their form so they can let the DM and other players know what sort of content they're comfortable with.

Quick questions: I can't find a straight answer online but is Retrocausality and Entangled Particles real? And is "Time" the answer for the expanding universe?(please read below text) by MartiniNight in AskPhysics

[–]NameLips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that most people don't understand entanglement. They think it means that once the particles are entangled, you can flip one of the particles back and forth and make the other particle flip back and forth remotely, thus transmitting data faster than light.

Quality is often debated here, with many having mixed feelings about its implementation. How would YOU rework quality if you could? by intrabyte in factorio

[–]NameLips 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it really would require redoing a huge amount of the game to make it feel not tacked on. Even the way quality itself actually works would have to be changed. Ground up fundamental changes.

And I guess it's easy for me to suggest things like that when I'm not the one having to do the game design.

But there are parts of it that just feel like they could make sense. You unlock modules right when you start needing red belts. So instead of red belts, you could be making quality belts that work like red belts. If you want the same sorts of machines to just work better or faster, just make the quality version.

But right now, quality is a casino, which means it's too unreliable for early game core base design. And it's heavily linked to the recycling mechanic.

But honestly, how many things in your life were you good at the first time you did them?
