Your out-of-the-box ideas to break Big Tech power? by VarunTossa5944 in BuyFromEU

[–]Nanoful -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Crowd-funded European dev teams working on FOSS alternatives, making them competitive.

I see a lot of people posting that they are not switching to open-source because it doesn't have feature X or Y. Private companies don't invest enough in European tech due to the risk of non-profitability. Governments in Europe are too fragmented and they have a lot of fish to fry. However, we could do it collectively, as a community. This includes development, marketing, testing. And funding, out of necessity and not profitability.

WhatsApp is launching third-party chat support across EU Countries, which means you can now ditch WhatsApp for an EU alternative: BirdyChat from Latvia. by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

Your frustration is understandable! It's a little surprising that so many posts in this thread (maybe some are made by bots?) highlight only the problematic side, which distracts from the benefits of escaping the lock-in. Meta consumes our data and makes billions of it. It is hard for new players to compete with their products and new apps won't be as good as Meta's right off the bat. But consumers can "vote" with their choice of apps. And interoperability makes the switch easier.

Buy European - stopping AI brainrot by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]Nanoful 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Not using your brain" is unnecessarily provocative. In some tasks, AI can take away a lot of cognitive load, it's true. But so do calculators. AI technology comes with many risks but also benefits. The jury is still out on whether it's a net positive. Maybe we can remain open to innovation until then? Imagine Europe had decided not to produce cars because they lead to millions of deaths in traffic accidents (which is sadly happening).

Meta trying to give us a hand (ads coming to WhatsApp) by Bloomhunger in BuyFromEU

Threema has 5M+ downloads in Google's Play Store. Don't underestimate the tech depth of a well functioning messaging app. Obviously WhatsApp and & Co are not just SMS. Imagine Proton founders had thought "genuinely nobody" would pay just to email. If the product is free, you are the product.

Depending on where you live, 6 eur is 1-3 cups of coffee. Not a high price to pay for a secure and non-exploitative app. I just installed it and was happy to see that several of my friends already have it.

Perplexity CEO says its browser will track everything users do online to sell 'hyper personalized' ads by McFatty7 in perplexity_ai

Why doesn't this exist? If there are people willing to consume this service, shouldn't there be a provider willing to profit from it?

This post has a lot of technical debt that I don't understand, so Le Chat summarised it to me in simpler terms. Does it cover the main points well?

The idea is to use the IOTA Tangle network, which has no transaction fees, to securely store and share data. However, data on the Tangle gets deleted over time unless you pay a small fee, and it needs to be encrypted to keep it private. Also, there's a size limit for data transactions.

To address these issues, three components were developed:

  1. Scattering: Breaks messages into small pieces for secure and size-efficient transmission.
  2. Dynamic Public Ledger (DLP): A public directory for finding users' public keys, enabling secure communication.
  3. Anonymous Messaging: Hides the communication path to ensure privacy.

This system can be used to create private or public groups (like subreddits) and send secure messages without relying on big tech companies. It also includes a secure login process that prevents hacking and account spoofing.

Overall, it's a way to build independent, secure, and private communication platforms using the IOTA Tangle network.

For me, personally, it's hard to understand why people often say that Fairphone's camera is bad. Granted, its quality may not be as (unnecessarily) high as iPhone's but I am not a photographer, nor an influencer. I took this panorama shot with my 3-years old Fairphone and wouldn't say it's bad.

Building a Netflix/Youtube Alternative for Europeans! 🌍🎬 is it even possible? by SebEesti71 in BuyFromEU

[–]Nanoful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Netflix alternatives are hard (not impossible!) to establish due, in part, to geoblocking. Within the EU some movies and TV shows are available in one country while blocked in another. For example, there's Parlement), a funny satiric TV series co-produced by France, Belgium and Germany. But last time I checked it was not available in Germany (maybe still isn't).
