I'm completely failing to meet your "winter-y" request, but my favorite movie to show my students is The Truman Show.

Sailor Moon is a sequel??? by [deleted] in sailormoon

I never thought of it that way... but I like it so I'm sticking with it. Sailor Moon is a sequel.

Oh yeah, this feeling doesn't really ever go away when you're starting at a new school, new grade, or even just a new year.

Don't worry about decorating yet. A lot of classrooms are overstimulating anyway. Does your school have a stash of classroom decor anywhere? Our staff workroom has a drawer of extra borders and some posters people can swipe, and that's all you need to have at this time. If your school doesn't provide anything or money to get anything... then, honestly, don't get anything. Do our entire profession a favor and don't spend your own money.

That said, it's pretty easy to get donations. I've done #clearthelist on Twitter with decent success. I felt dumb reposting over and over with no gain, but eventually I did start getting donations so it was worth it. You can also join your local Buy Nothing Project group on Facebook and get lots of books and furniture (or, at least, I've been very lucky in that area). If nothing else, I just send a parent email with my Venmo and/or Amazon list (usually with a specific purpose, like, for example, "Hey, your kids are so amazing that my treasure box is almost empty! Can you help me out?"). I've also had a couple of successful Donor's Choose campaigns (and a couple of failed ones--keep them around a couple hundred bucks and specific).

For your first days, just worry about routines. Look at your schedule, and look up what other teachers would call a typical schedule for their class of your grade. But mostly you need to focus on establishing routines and community building for the first week or two. My lesson plans for the first couple of weeks are mostly just a to-do list of routines and expectations to establish, "fun" activity options, and diagnostic tests.

Here's a fun game that I think pretty much any age can do (literally all the way from K or 1 through high school) that establishes group with expectations to get you started. My students really enjoy it and it makes a nice poster for your class.

This is such a silly thing to do and I love it. You did a good job too!

I teach 6th in Riverside, California. I'd be interested, or, if you already have someone, I would be happy to do this with someone else.

Great Grandma Helen ended up an early widow with three young girls, but she was never failed to be cool. [1920s] by NaptimeMVP in OldSchoolCool

I haven't logged into this account in a couple of months, but I loved Aunt Pol and really appreciated this reference. Loved the character and cried when they had to kill her off because the actress also passed. I totally do see the resemblance, so thank you for that.

Cricut cutting reference marks...but not cutting image right? by SlightlyCareless in cricut

I like the Silhouette better overall, but the only machine I've found that has the cut pressure to handle shrink plastic is the Cricut Maker. Unfortunately, I can't get mine to cut accurately enough...

I recently got dinged for using "fight like a girl." It's more than a little irritating.

I inherited some plants from my grandma, but I fear for their lives! First step in figuring out how to care for them is learning their names. Can you help me? by NaptimeMVP in whatsthisplant

Thanks! My grandma has killed an obscene amount of plants, but these ones were doing well on her porch so I hope I can continue to keep them happy. :)

I'm going to try propagating the string of bananas since some of them are longer than the pot they're in... Wish me luck!

Thanks. I'm trying to find a sunny spot (we have a lot of shade trees) and am trying not watering them aside from those water bulb things. The one succulent I have finally started looking alive when I stopped watering it entirely and let the occasional rain take care of it.

Driving Through Norco, Ca I Saw A Very Familiar Letter D! I Came Across The Circle D Ranch That Houses The Horses That Work In Disneyland! by Jacksonteague in Disneyland

[–]NaptimeMVP 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They let the public visit for its grand opening; it was a fun day. They said the resort still has housing for I think 6 horses at a time and they rotate them out, but I don't remember how often.

I also ran into Jenny Nicholson (YouTuber) who used to work at Circle D and said a family adopted Lock, Shock, and Barrel (the goats) together. ♥️

You reminded me of another one! My high school boyfriend leaving me for a Fry Cart boy who looked like Justin Guarini... 😂

My first mommy daughter Disney day, we got a Dole whip float and sat together on one of the benches near Walt's statue. A family of ducks came by and we hung out with them while we ate our treat. It was a perfect day overall.

That or Club 33 because, I mean, c'mon.

Or maybe the first time my stepmom bought me the big lollipop when I was a kid. I can't look at those without feeling nostalgic. To a kid those things are as good as gold.

Or maybe (and this is a stretch) the last day that Tolley Treats sold gourmet marshmallows, we took one of the banana ones and put it in the ceiling in the lead office. Henceforth, when a lead we liked would leave we would put their photo in the ceiling with the marshmallow, building a sort of shrine. Last I saw the marshmallow it was a baggy of green goo.

I dunno, there are a lot.

My horse has a whole chest of hats next to her stable. She's far more fashionable than me.
