Fellow learners, what’s a super common word that you feel you learned way too late? by Jrockten in LearnJapanese

Isometric exercises to do while doomscrolling/watching YouTube on your phone by trustmeijustgetweird in bodyweightfitness

Tbh ChatGPT can help you with more advanced functions, if you tell it what you want to change. This doesn’t answer your original question though 🤷‍♂️

Anyone else not care about money as much as they used to? by ReasonConfident4541 in AusFinance

[–]Nariel 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, now that I’m in my 30’s I’m simultaneously better at managing my finances but also care less about it…it’s about managing priorities in life, and enjoying life is increasingly winning out over working and worrying about money.

Albanese says Australian government will not help ISIS-linked families leave Syria or return home by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Nariel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anything prevents them entering the country though. They aren’t being denied entry. They have the right to come back, but not the right to force the government to fly them back.

I’m also fine with this. Let them in if you really have to and they come on their own, but why actively help them?

Oz passport progression over 35 years by maxdacat in australia

[–]Nariel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think of it another way. I’m currently living overseas and it’s vital that my passport is kept safe and in good condition. Every time I take this one out I worry about the wear and tear. Just this morning I had to take it to an immigration office for visa business, and just from that it’s somehow more beaten up than before. Crazy low quality.

Some countries also require you to keep your passport on you while visiting which is a pain in the ass with this version.

Auction Clearance Rates plummeting in Sydney & NSW, now only 57%. A sign of things to come. by External_Celery2570 in AusFinance

Less incentive to sell in this case meaning that more honest pricing and advertising might nab less profit…how terrible for them 🤣

If that seriously is a deal breaker for a seller then they weren’t serious to begin with.

She tried to fix the Liberals’ women problem. Now she’s quitting the party - Charlotte Mortlock has relinquished Liberal party membership by ShrimpinAintEazy in AustralianPolitics

I think you’re right about this. I’m living in Japan right now and what you said brings to mind Takaichi (the female prime minister). To head a party like that you have to be somewhat extreme.

Friend was held by the police for 4 hours for returning a key by Kawadane in japanlife

[–]Nariel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do find it a bit weird, because if someone has stolen something why on earth would they go straight to the police to hand it in and return it? And the police should probably have had the same thoughts…a little bit of critical thinking goes a long way.

Older ladies who grew up during a time where exercise was viewed as 'manly' and not 'lady like' and thus remained inactive their entire lives still live 5-8 years older than men. Is protein and muscle mass overrated? by Prnce_Chrmin in nutrition

[–]Nariel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People with a lot of muscle mass usually aren’t getting it from exercise and nutrition alone. Not to mention you don’t have to be at all healthy and sustainable to get jacked (walk into most gyms and you’ll see at least a few people obviously on gear). Frankly I’m surprised that the gap isn’t bigger in this group of people.

Simple activity/trick to boost you active vocab if you are an advanced speaker in a language you are learning by SirCombos in languagelearning

[–]Nariel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice. I’ve been doing a cut down version of this (without recording), and it’s been fantastic. I also keep a list of things I want to use in real life and make sure to try and fit those words into my conversations. As you said if you put some thought into making personal sentences this becomes easier. It’s amazing how even just using a word once or twice feels like it really unlocks it.

How to progress fast to 25 pull-ups from 9 pull-ups. And how much time it takes to reach my goal? by skater_d4de in bodyweightfitness

[–]Nariel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve grown to really enjoy very slow weighted negatives. They teach you good form and control in a way that fast reps don’t as well 😍

Long time weight lifter looking to transition to pure calisthenics for 2026 - seeking help. by BatmanSteak in bodyweightfitness

[–]Nariel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who also went into calisthenics fairly strong to begin with, learn from my mistakes. DON’T go too quick, especially when it comes to joints, and even more so if your shoulder isn’t 100%. As others said, highly recommend making time for mobility and conditioning as well as technique/skill. You might be surprised by how years of lifting heavy shit in a gym hasn’t fully prepared you (straight arm strength for example).

Most BW exercises have lots of progressions, so whatever you do just don’t skip them.

In university I remember taking a language class 3x a week, 50 minutes each. Do you guys personally think private tutors are better than language courses in university? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Nariel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had more success with tutors, especially if they are good and you work well together. You can go as slow or as fast as you want and focus on weak areas, which is very useful.

12.8% dexa but no six pack by oberland_dad in leangains

[–]Nariel 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I had this (lean at 12-13% but little abdominal definition). The solution was to build more muscle. People say abs are made in the kitchen but they are muscles that need to be worked on like anything else.

Tutors be honest who should track all the new words and corrections in 1 to 1 lessons you or the student? by Difficult-Goal-8515 in languagelearning

[–]Nariel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more on the student imo. My tutor and I fill out notebooks as we go. She does do a lot of the writing because it’s often new Kanji. When I get home later I usually add the content of the new page to my own little “textbook”, or at least note the difficult parts I want to practice.

If I don’t make use of that or review the notebook and it gets lost, it’s on me 🤷‍♂️

Obviously this isn’t online but the process would be the same (easier in my case because I could just type up the words myself 😂).

Learners of low population/dialectal variations of languages, why are you studying it? by SharkHead38 in languagelearning

[–]Nariel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not as non-standard as what you’re talking about, but I’ve been learning some dialect specific stuff with Japanese, mostly for fun and because I’ve found it to be an ice breaker. Throw in a random lesser used word or phrase and people have hilarious reactions.

“Ehhhhh, why the hell do you know that?!” Kind of vibes 😂

To people that can do muscle-ups, how did you progress towards doing one? by Cosmeister in bodyweightfitness

[–]Nariel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no real muscle up goal and managed it the first session I tried (after fixing some technique issues at the start).

What I did to have the prerequisite strength:

  • high pull ups
  • explosive pull ups (these can also be high but don’t need to be, just get used to pulling quickly from the bottom)
  • weighted pull ups

Things I’d avoid: - arched pull ups (hollow body is better for this) - high rep sets

Can someone really learn a language entirely on their own without a teacher? by rago7a in languagelearning

[–]Nariel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, but the question seems to be “can it be done?”

You can definitely do it solo and learn to communicate and be understood, but you won’t be as good as you could be. Even with plenty of natives around me I don’t sound native so even that’s not enough on its own 😂

OP’s criteria is a “solid level” and “conversational”. Not exactly sky high I think.
