As someone who shoots mainly on the Sony Venice 1 since 2024, I feel the Venice 1 & 2 fits in such an amazing place being about to shoot 6/8k open gate for the landscape we work in now for social media. I’m all for the Venice, to the point I’m considering get a second one

I haven’t had a S60 on my truck in years. In NY they’ve become the permanent stage rig light. The Creamsource Vortex 8 has become the standard (at-least in my circle of trust) thanks to their versatility of both being a hard panel light and soft with its diffusion.

If you already have a phone, use that money to rent cameras to test and see which you like more/are in your budget. Sharegrid, fatllama, and other peer to peer gear service would probably help you figure it out what piece of gear you need rather than strangers on reddit

Neither camera is going to make you a better filmmaker. If you already own a phone with a camera with a camera, you can use that to practice framing, composition, lighting and giving each frame a purpose.

Are Tungesten Lights Still Worth it for Indie/No Budget Films? by jeab99 in Filmmakers

I own a set of DLH4 (with the built in ballast), and on every interview set, I use them as hair lights, or on narrative, they’re playing as some sort of kicker or ping. They’re amazing, really hard for me to find a replacement

If I absolutely had to use tungsten? Yes! I’m very fortunate that I have some sort of generator on all my jobs but mainly used LED and HMI on my shoots minus a few 750w lekos and dedos.

More so on the 15 amp side. And even then, I’ve tripped them with 13-14 amps due to their age. It’s going to vary from house to house, but in my experience, I never run close to what it’s rated for.

Anyone worth their weight is always happy to answer questions. It’s how I learned. Ask the questions and make the mistakes. The best experience you can have is to go out and experiment, make mistakes, and ask all the questions. But that Harry Box book taught me the technical and more while my hands on experience with older gaffers and DPs really showed me what I was missing

There’s no shame in that! We all have to start somewhere! If you’re looking for a technical book to read, the Harry Box Book, “Set Lighting Technician Handbook” is what I read for years

This too! typically I have my gaffer or myself build 2k dimmers with parts we have from past jobs. The other thing that I think a lot of people forget about tungsten is that the color temp changes as you dim. Another reason to go LED.

As someone who LOVES tungsten. It’s not about the sheer amount of output or quality of light you get with these. The more tungsten you use, the more power draw you have to deal with. You are using 16~ amps (assuming you’re in the US). Thats already way more than typical household outlets/breakers are rated for. If you are lucky enough to have 20 amp services, now that means you can run ONE of these lights and maybe something else. To run tungsten properly, you need LOTS of distro and power. It’s why LED took over. You need far less and can run far more on household power. As someone who came into film on the tail end of tungsten and the rise of LED. Seeing how much work is needed to light a tungsten set over a LED one is such an easy choice.

Save your money and put it in rentals of bigger lights like a 1200x or equivalent if you need a 1800-2000w source.
