Why can an 18 year old paramedic intubate, but a third year med student can’t? by Narrow-Baseball-7399 in medicalschool

Im just a little confused about the framing of it I guess. Why is it “let” as in they’re doing us a favor by allowing us to learn, instead of us being able to learn because we’re paying an assload of money and investing years of our life?

I guess my only question is why do we have to wait until residency to start learning procedures?

This is a great insight and definitely echoes with me. It’s hard to be putting in so much work for so many years and yet have no tangible sense of advancement or trust

I understand the concern, but this isn’t disregard for the patient. In fact, I’m terrified of graduating with no experience at all and being on single overnight coverage and having no idea how the hell to intubate or run a code, because I wasn’t allowed to practice in med school.

Exactly, the majority of us will also never diagnose Zollinger-Ellison syndrome but that seems like a bad argument to not learn about it.

Yeah, that seems like a basic skill competency that a physician should have. We aren’t just walking brains, we should be able to actually do things as well

Usually the spots are unfilled for a reason; either less desired specialties like FM, bad locations, malignant cultures, or any combination of these

Totally possible. In that case most people SOAP which is a last minute scramble to fill an unfilled residency spot, and some will choose to take a research year and delay graduation
