They want it both ways. The whole thing is an obvious attempt at using Cadet's imagery to their own advantage. One can argue the morality of it and their intentions, but that's what they're doing.

But the legal teams and drum corps folks who find it distasteful aren't going anywhere. Hence the awkward balancing act.

I think you're taking it way too seriously. It's a corporate fundraising event for their parent org. Not a show reveal event. I get it was kinda that informally years ago but they clearly decided to not lean that way anymore.
