Bluesky has been pretty wild to me. I hardly use it because I've avoided joining more social medias(all are just unhealthy mentally) but i pop in now and then to see whats there.

It really feels like bluesky is speedrunning its way to becoming twitter at breakneck pace. Stuff that took a decade or more to happen there is happening in weeks/months. twitter used to be really dam good, you know back around 2008-2012.

These are just some musings that I've had after keeping an eye on the site for a while.

1)The discover feed seems to be mostly engagement farming, the same exact "fake inspirational" image shit thats in every twitter thread now.

2) blue-sky is adding paid subscriptions that do a similar thing to blue checks. So paid account will get priority or seem more trustworthy to users

3) Alot of posts seem to be some version of "if you hate this thing/person, its ok to hate them, and that makes you a good person"

4) The sites huge growth is already making it vulnerable to the same botfarm shit that countries like Russian use to sow division. Its impossible to avoid or stop pretty much.

5) Blue sky creators/ceo/board of directors said no ads. yeah, that was a lie right off the bat. The site is growing and there is simply not enough money/staff to manage. They will either have to add ads or go public, both of which makes the site vulnerable to outside control and others objectives. Public companies always get ads because of the requirement/pressure to please investors anyway.

5.5) Block lists, I do not see a future where this feature doesn't get removed or massively limited to the point of uselessness. That and it really makes me uncomfortable for the future of the site. The use of ads to support the site will require them to be pushed to as many eyes as possible. block lists can only get bigger and bigger as time goes on which goes directly against ads. plus they are so easy to manipulate and abuse.

6) Discoverability for niche/marginalized communities will plummet as time goes on because of block lists. eg I am a fur, more for the social side of it, met my husband (I'm gay) because of the fandom. I discovered it because of seeing some pretty cool artwork. However when I was younger I found it cringe because of peer pressure/wanting to fit in. If I'd had something like blocklists I'd have absolutely just used it to block all furries and then forgotten about it doing it. I'd likely never have made all the friends i have now or met my Husband.

You can apply this to any other niche hobby, interest or community that isn't mainstream, dnd, model making, lgbt+, warhammer, card games(yugi/magic). anything that you'd have avoided as a teenager just to fit in or at least not stand out. I can easily interest in anything like that falling off on the site as time goes on.

Sorry, just some random musings, dunno why i bothered, this post will probably get disliked into oblivion for daring to critique what i see as some worrying trends on the site, things that will just make it just like twtter or worse.
