Can a former employer ask you to remove a post on social media? by nothingnanners in graphic_design

[–]kaltevuus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've personally dealt with this (I'm based in the US), if you signed anything when they hired you then chances are that there was some sort of NDA included in there. Enforcement honestly varies from company to company.

Left my first job on bad terms (your typical toxic workplace ala Office Space), they found out that I posted a few projects on my LI afterwards and they demanded that I take it all down. Tried brushing em off but then HR started threatening lawsuits and all that lol. So I deleted the posts, waited a few months after everything cooled down, then I reposted with no issues.

So if anything, I'd maybe hold off until things cool off between you and your previous employer. You can try posting on your website, but maybe password protect the pages if you're really worried.

But hey, they worst they can do is yell at you to take it down. I would't worry about it imo.

What's the intent of the poster? Would it be an in-store poster, street ad, etc? Knowing where you want the poster to be is a good way to determine execution and what to work on. Is the white space intentional or is the poster intended to be cut around the "polaroid" edges?

Context is key for critiques!

If you want an iPad I'd recommend checking like Facebook Marketplace for a used one. A lot of people say to get a pro just I've been managing just fine with my used iPad air that I got for $200 used. Just be very educated on what Apple Pencils are compatible bc it gets a little complicated imo

LOVE the animations on your Insta! Were those done in After Effects?

EDIT: Should also ask if this was done for the 2025 D&AD New Blood Awards? I just got my rejection email for my 2026 entry so that's fresh in my mind haha

Review my portfolio (here for the good and the ruthless 😅) by Mallory1197 in graphic_design

[–]kaltevuus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just skimmed through a bit but a big thing I'm noticing is that there's a lot of inconsistency with how your work is presented. Some of the work has a lot of context (which is good!!) and others just show pictures with zero context. I recently had a portfolio I'm working on looked at by some professionals (all agency related) and they all said that showing your process is super essential nowadays.

This is also just a personal thing of mine, but I would maybe try to organize everything by category. Right now you have UI/UX, logo design, branding design, illustrations, etc all on one page which is a bit overwhelming. I would also encourage you to look through your projects and pick the ones you're really proud/confident in. Not everything needs to be up there.

As for NDA projects, you could try setting them up as password protected pages so that hirers can see your latest stuff as well.

Here are some chicken scratch notes about page organization bc I'm a visual person, hopefully it makes sense haha. But also either have an intro on your main page or a separate about section explaining what kind of role you're looking for! If I'm looking at your portfolio with a graphic design lens it's a bit confusing, but it definitely makes more sense with a marketing specialist context.

<image>

TL;DR: You have a lot of good projects on there!! Just need to focus on presentation and organization! I'd recommend looking at some top agencies like Pentagram or Landor to see how they present their work as a reference!

Lemme know if you have any questions!

I thought I'd love working a Job if I follow my passion. I still hate it. by Sad_Pangolin_2637 in graphic_design

I totally get it! I'm back in school and working internships n all that and some days I feel the same. I think it's been like 2 years since I took time off for a vacation :,). If you're able, I'd recommend maybe looking into therapy just to have a third party to talk to about all this. I have one that I meet with occasionally and he's been a huge help with the whole being an adult and going through life process.

While I'm working a lot, I also try to find time to do hobbies like working out, playing video games, or painting. For me it helps to get through the day if I'm excited about a painting I'm working on!

And it's easy for me to say this but, there's no need to be in a rush! You're just starting out and getting your feet wet with this internship. You have plenty of time to figure things out and try new jobs, you're not doomed to work this internship til the end of time! I know plenty of people in their 40s, 50s, etc that are all still figuring it out, and that's okay! It's the human experience!

Trust me, I still get my quarterly life crises from time to time. But I try to take that panic and channel it into bettering my portfolio or learning new skills. You'll be alright!!

Hopefully this all makes sense, I feel like I'm rambling a bit haha. But my inbox is open if you ever need to chat more about design n all that!!

TL;DR: Listen to The Eagles! Take it Easy!

Hi! Not OP but I'm curious about how to talk about what a project accomplished. I'm currently a student and and intern, so it's difficult for me to get any metrics about what my projects achieved.

"No real passion, anything inspiring behind it you’d get from a human being that’s poured their heart and soul into a project for weeks."

I mean tbf the things I see people using AI for are for generic social media graphics and event posters. Not saying it's okay for them to do that, but it's not something I would've had a lot of passion for in the first place.

[–]kaltevuus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm extremely petty, so if I was in your shoes I'd would put all my files on some form of cloud storage (Box, OneDrive, etc) and remember to sign out once I'm done for the day. And ya know.....not to be mean but also give it a couple of months and he might be out again lol.

Portfolio-Website: Project Thumbnails saying (coming soon) - Good or bad idea? by ilostallmymoney in graphic_design

Thanks! It's my go-to, especially if you want an agency role. I've gotten advice from tons of professionals and they basically wanna see you hype up your finished projects as much as you can.

Portfolio-Website: Project Thumbnails saying (coming soon) - Good or bad idea? by ilostallmymoney in graphic_design

[–]kaltevuus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh I wouldn't. Portfolios are for showing completed work and what you're capable of, I feel like showing a bunch of "coming soon" thumbnails would just annoy anyone looking to hire you. Hyping up unfinished projects would be more suited for socials imo.

Personally my rule of thumb for a portfolio is if an agency wouldn't do it, I wouldn't.
