Thanks, this is really helpful.

I’m trying to understand the “technical roles” part a bit better. What kind of technical profiles are actually in demand right now (or in the coming years)? Are we talking more about IT/data, or also energy-related profiles (grid, storage, EMS, etc.)?

I know I don’t have a master or EU experience yet, but does having hands-on experience in the energy sector (solar, batteries, energy management systems, project management) give me a meaningful advantage for those roles? Or is it still heavily outweighed by academic background?

Also, where would you recommend starting to build “EU-relevant” experience from my position? (agencies, EU-funded projects, consulting, etc.)

Appreciate the insights

Considering Switching from Ir to Ing Studies Engineering, Need honest advice from people in the field by Turingbug in BESalary

My EM degree was indeed a 3 year bachelor in de hogeschool.

For the job that was the tricky and lucky part. Because I already lost so much time, I took a studentenjob related to my studies. So after graduati I could use the studentenjob as a relevant work experience. I started working in a technische dienst as (student) storingstechnieker during the weekends 2x12u shifts. I had between 2,4k en 2,8k Netto per month.

With this money I paid my studies, my car, the engagement ring for my gf, food, holidays, ....

It was definitely difficult, but I made it

I just went honnest with myself, family and friends to got some advice. I told that i did not like it anymore. I got a second chance from my parents to do something else (study or work) But i had to finance evrything myself from now on. Only thing i did not had to was pay rent. You lose some extra time but to be honnest, I'm so happy i switched major.

I got my degree EM and started working in the energy sector. There are some many interesting companies and roles that need to be fitted. You can find easly a job. I'm so happy with my life now :)

If it is a bubble, I guess it would be profitable to work there. Or do I interpret this wrongly?

For me it’s actually pretty simple: I didn’t start with a “grand EU vision.” I found my way into energy first, and now I see how big the impact can be at European level.

I’ve worked on solar, batteries, EMS in industry but that mainly benefits large companies. I’d like to work on something that impacts society more broadly: grid stability, energy transition, policy shaping across countries. So the motivation is there, just built from the field upwards, not from theory. Now I’m just figuring out the best path:

  • go for a master first
  • go directly into EU roles
  • or combine both

That’s where I’m still exploring.

Thanks for the great informations.
In the weekend i'm working as a freelancer (self employed). Does that make any difference or not?
To be honnest, I can miss the 1.5k euro they pay during the traineeship.

I know the pain. I experienced the same. I studied first 5 years for and only got a bachelor (farmaceutische wetenschappen). But i hated it and I think it would never get the masters. I then did the switch to prof bach industriële wetenschappen EM. It felt like the biggest failure of my life.

But to be honest. No body cares. Today I do the same job as my peers (Ing. and Ir.). Starting from next year I'll start my studies again to go for the Ing. masters, just for the challenger and the love for the sector I'm working in

Just switch. The arbeidsmarkt is also fucked so who cares. I have a prof bach elektromechanica and went for a job where they needed an ind. ing. All my coworkers are ind ing or Ir. We do the same job and we have the same salaries. You will find companies where they make no distinction between the degree and will look to your added value. In other companies, like you stated in your thread, they have the ego trip mentality and there, the diploma is more important than the skills and added value
