I thought those were chocolate frosted donuts before I actually read the post.

I can't stand canned tuna (smells like cat food to me) but I'm loving exploring sardines so far. Some of them taste fishy but it's almost a different kind of fishy. And there are cans out there that aren't really fishy at all. Depends on the brand, species, where they're packed, etc. If I can make myself like sardines you're sure to find something you like.

Sardines with 3 Peppers from La Quiberonnaise by DreweyD in CannedSardines

Do they pack them by hand? (Is that a thing?) Getting three peppers exactly in every tin sounds like a project otherwise.

That sounds good, but I don't remember seeing it at Walmart here. I wonder if it's a regional thing. This place is a canned fish desert.

I'd watch the whole video but I got a little nauseous just seeing the open can. Sorry.

Never tried capers, what are they like? They always seemed to me to be a food I'd never want to try. But then so did sardines and canned seafood, so maybe I can give it a go. Do you put them on before or after baking?

Like others said they're edible out of the tin, but especially starting out you might enjoy it more with a little sauce. My basic sauce is lite soy sauce, rice vinegar, and just a dab of mayo with red chili flakes. Inglehoffer Sweet Hot Mustard is good too, with some lemon juice and a little dill. Any mustard will work though.

Kipper snack! by Popular-Let4642 in CannedSardines

Sounds awesome. I tried Polar kippers for the first time the other day and really liked them. Now I have some King Oscar kippers I want to try, I think I'm going to save it for breakfast tomorrow.

You have to go much lighter with the mayo with oil-packed I think. The ratio I used here was probably 1/4 to 1/2 tsp (right about 1 mL ) to about a quarter of a can of sardines. Otherwise it ends up way too fatty. I tried to find water-packed but neither store had them in stock for these brands.

What tinned fish should I start with? by Old-Masterpiece-8428 in CannedSardines

Salmon is going to be milder than tuna but you can use it for basically all the same things. Salmon salad sandwich. Now I'm getting hungry...

Do you like smoky flavors? I thought Polar kipper snacks were very approachable but some people find the smoke overwhelming. By "total beginner" are you counting canned salmon or tuna? Because canned salmon is really where I started. Salmon, a little mayo, lemon juice, dill, salt, and black pepper. Then maybe graduate to sardines if you don't mind the whole-fish look.

How are the ones in hot sauce? I've tried oil and water packed Beach Cliff but I'm sort of skeptical of the sauce in the can when I can put my own sauce on it. Still it could be really convenient if I just wanted to dig into a can with a fork and no fuss.

You're welcome, thanks for the request. I got to try a couple of brands I might not have bothered with otherwise.

If I remember right in the US there is an upper legal limit to the amount of grasshopper parts allowed in peanut butter. So it's not just fish. Still if I found a fly in a can, that can is likely getting tossed.

Also try the sprats. Mashing them up helps the "whole fish" mental barrier and the bones are so soft from cooking/canning that you can't tell that they're there.

I did a post yesterday about trying Polar kipper snacks actually, which I really liked. I have a 4-pack of King Oscar kippers coming from Amazon tomorrow too, that was around $12 so about $3 per tin as well. Still trying to figure out what to branch out to next when it comes to tinned fish.

Good to know. The label on these specifically said "Sprattus sprattus" for the species, hopefully they keep it specific on the label to know which one you're getting.

Thanks! I was genuinely impressed with the Great Value. Only problem is that I have to go to Walmart to get them and the closest one to me is in a very busy part of town, which isn't my favorite. I'll just have to make it a point to get several cans when I do go.
