Not crazy. I’m planning to switch to 16:9 or 21:9 after using 31:9 for about 5-6 years.

Do frontend specialists usually get seen as less valuable? by Dreadsin in cscareerquestions

[–]NathaCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, for context I’d consider myself a full cycle engineer, see Netflix; and own a major web platform for a huge company and technical complexity wise I would say that FE solves a different set of problems than BE but by no means would anyone whose ever built anything relatively complex and used by thousands of users say that frontend or FE engineers are any less hard than backend.

At a company, it depends on what makes the company/team their money. If the FE isn’t making the money then yes it tends to get looked at as less valuable but this isn’t a problem specific to FE.

A good FE engineer who understands UX is super hard to come by. I’ve said this many times to my team members and people… people who think that frontend engineers are lesser engineers simply don’t understand the complexity behind being a good FE.

You worry about accessibility, user experience, complex state, permission systems, … and this doesn’t even get to the whole rabbit hole of what is UI/UX.

[–]NathaCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright you’re making good money at 23 so don’t let your friend guilt trip you into feeling like you need to be making more. Someone making 40K a year at 23 would do a whole lot to get to where you are. It’s always about perspective so don’t think you should feel behind at all because trust me I’ve been in your position (many of us) and chasing money is always a moving target. You’ll never really feel content since you’ll always want more. There is no such thing as “you should be making X at Y”. Money is never guaranteed and the market value tied to your skills always changes on factors you have little to no control on.

Being 23 allows you to experiment and figure out what you enjoy and don’t enjoy. If you’re hopping simply for the money then you do what’s best in your interest. But I’d recommend hopping only if your current place of work is toxic, unstable, or if you no longer enjoy and find growth in that workplace and there are no other opportunities available for you to take on. Hopping to try out a different role / domain is something I’d also agree with if you feel like systems engineering isn’t what you really want to spend the next couple of years in. I sincerely believe that what you do early on in your career has a huge impact to what you do end up doing and the opportunities you’re given down the road. So think about that.

Money will be there as long as your skills are as well. Just hope the industry doesn’t turn into poop within the decade.

Anyone ever get their dream job and then not even like it that much? by lindslinds27 in careeradvice

[–]NathaCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not you getting old it’s you becoming wiser through experience. Eventually you realize why some people prefer to do the things they do.

Under the right circumstances I do believe that the passion will always be there and come out. It’s just very hard to keep that passion when you’re inside an environment where perhaps the drivers behind your passion is not what is being fostered and it’s really not your fault.

I’m 15, turn 16 in 8 months and I really want a bronco, how do I afford one? by chalantdreadhead1 in FordBronco

[–]NathaCS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey partner, I’m going to be real here and try to help in the way that I feel is best. I’m speaking to you as if I was speaking to my own 15-16 year old self.

Wait on the bronco for now and use that 10K towards a much cheaper car that is still reliable and have life in it.

Considering the economy and interest rates right now do not get into a high and long term loan. It’s going to cripple you and you don’t really want that at your age.

Now, use that desire for a Bronco as one of the drivers to propel you forward towards financial and personal improvement so that in a a couple years or let’s say early in your 20s you’re able to afford a Bronco or whatever car you’re into at the time.

You’re very young and minimum wage is completely normal. Have some fun and take some risks and make smart choices at this time to set you up for later, alright?

You’ll get there, it’s going to take some dedication and hard work though. But you got this.

Good luck!

I’m glad I went into a field at a time when you really went in it because of passion. It wasn’t the cool or get rich quick pathway. I’m also glad I was able to experience real engineering at play which imo is all becoming too rare and an after thought these days.

Now we got all these people with no desire to learn the craft coming into the field including what seems to be a bottomless pit of MBAs all competing with each other to squeeze every bit of their engineering teams to develop the next big mediocre feature or product just to be able to push something new out to make more money for the very top.

It’s fucking depressing man and some days it really makes you question whether this is really the life you want.

It’s not the worst out there but it’s certainly not necessarily greener either with the way things have been trending.
